Santorum surges into the lead (National poll Santorum 38%, Romney 23%)
Public Policy Polling ^ | 02/11/2012 | Public Policy Polling

Riding a wave of momentum from his trio of victories on Tuesday Rick Santorum has opened up a wide lead in PPP's newest national poll. He's at 38% to 23% for Mitt Romney, 17% for Newt Gingrich, and 13% for Ron Paul.

Part of the reason for Santorum's surge is his own high level of popularity. 64% of voters see him favorably to only 22% with a negative one. But the other, and maybe more important, reason is that Republicans are significantly souring on both Romney and Gingrich. Romney's favorability is barely above water at 44/43, representing a 23 point net decline from our December national poll when he was +24 (55/31). Gingrich has fallen even further. A 44% plurality of GOP voters now hold a negative opinion of him to only 42% with a positive one. That's a 34 point drop from 2 months ago when he was at +32 (60/28).

Casey was also trading on his father’s name, although he was as much like his Dad as Ronnie Reagan’s is like his.

santorum shamefully weak ? What's weak about truly held conservative principles shamelessy expressed.

Earmarks? debt ceiling votes ? don;t make me laugh. Maybe it was his 3 marriages...no, never mind, that wasn't Rick. The '06 loss....pubbies of all stripes got plastered.

Any dirt on Santorum pales in comparison and worries me less than Mitt or Newt. Negative campaigns against an altar boy won't go down well, and in fact could backfire.

Seriously, Rick has held office for several years with thousands of votes which can be nitpicked to death. bottom line; in 2012, he supports a strong family over a big government and most everything that goes with it.

He was in Senate leadership, and took the company line (ie; judiciary chair snarlin' Arlen Specter, which helped us with Roberts, Alito, etc) His earmarks were military / national security based, and has since joined Jim DeMint in dropping their earmarks)

I can't speak to the 2nd amendment nits you have, but they don't bother me as he's a supporter of the constitution as written. I trust he had reasons, but the key word is "trust".

I like Santorum, but he’s too socialistic, and I’m sorry, intellectually he’s just not in the same league as Newt.

Newt has everything a president needs: wide vision, a complete understanding of our nation’s history, vision for the future ...a DEEP understanding of how our legislature works, and a forceful kick as* personality to get things done.

THIS is what you need to be president ..really need. Looks, good family, good “optics,” coolness, PERFECT personal sineless lifestyle ....those things look good on TV, but they don’t make a good president who gets results. Look at Obama ..things are falling apart ..there is NO leadership. He’s a joke.

Wake up. Our country is in a MESS due to failed leadership. We need Newt who is the only one uniquely qualified to do the job. And I loved Palin and her speech, and everythikng about her ...she’s inspirational — but even SHE could not do what Newt is going to do as president.

I think most of all people need to get off their judgemental high horses and stop beating up on Newt for his personal past, which is such old history and old news it’s just ridiculous.

Will the real Rick Santorum please stand UP! Santorum is NO friend of the fiscal conservatives and played a role in getting this nations economy into the mess it is in today.

Wait until the facts and truth come out on Rick...his poll numbers will go down so fast it will make his head spin! there will be no more free passes for the prententious, pious Rick. His chance of winning the presidency are the equivalent of my chances of winning the power ball lottery. The flavor of the month is going sour and soon.

Santorum bragged in 2006 that he had steered millions of dollars in earmarks to clients of American Continental Group, a lobbying firm. They gave him $14,000 that year in donations, and after he left office paid him $65,000 for “legislative policy consulting services.” Another firm he helped, Consol Energy, paid him $142,500 just in 2010 and 2011.

Earmarks

Santorum passed out over a BILLION dollars in earmarks — chunks of money directed to one specific recipient — according to Taxpayers for Common Sense. He even voted for the infamous “Bridge to Nowhere” in Alaska. In one bill alone — the 2006 Defense appropriations bill — he personally inserted 54 earmarks that delivered $154 million of your tax money to special interests. And hey, guess what? Those special interests donated over $200,000 to his campaigns just that year.
Rick Perry spoke about Santorum’s earmarks but it was ignored because Rick presented no real threat at the time. It is going to hit the fan now! as it should.

Rick Santorum voted with extreme liberal Barbara Boxer to restrict your 2nd Amendment Rights (gun lock requirement):

Rick Santorum voted to increase the Debt Limit

Rick Santorum voted for CAFTA, which lead to textile manufacturing plants to leave the South

Rick Santorum voted to TAX the Internet:

Rick Santorum voted to BAILOUT the Airline Industry:

Rick Santorum voted to PROTECT Abortion Clinics:

Senators Proposwe Redundant Media Research Study

washington, D.C.) - Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) today criticized Senators Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), and RICK SANTORUM (R-Pa.) for reintroducing the Children and Media Research Advancement Act (CAMRA), which will set up a $90 million program to research what countless other studies have already documented the effects of television viewing and other media on children. CAGW named Sen. Lieberman Porker of the Month when he introduced the same legislation in August, 2004.

Santorum tossing hard earned taxpayer money to the wind!

Brace yourself. Some Santorum fans are very sensitive and inclined to shoot the messenger. Facts are no defense!

I wonder sometimes if some freepers hate Newt or Santorum even more than Romney. Or even more than Obama.

“Are you aware that Newt met wife no 1 when he was fifteen or sixteen. She was his Geometry teacher. She is the mother of his children and he won’t say anything negative about her. She was in her mid twenties. We have laws against that now.

Wife no two has a sizable FBI file that says she is “mentally unstable” He stayed with her, both getting “help” until the decision to make the separation of six plus years final.”

America isn’t going to elect as President someone who was married 3 times. It’s just too much to process.

If Romney wins the GOP nomination, a large portion of the conservative base including me won’t vote for him, and Obama will win.

If Newt wins the GOP nomination, a large portion of women won’t vote for him (evident in Florida results) and Obama will win.

Santorum is the only one capable of overthrowing Obama.

If this santorum bandwagon succeeds, it will be very bad news for the nation. What the democrat hate machine does to santorum will make their assassination of Sarah Palin look like a garden party.

the democrat hate machine

Here's my take

only 3 states count

Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania

The rest are either committed already or too small to count. By Sept 15th the residents of those states will go stark raving mad from the avalanche of advertising.

That is what mystifies me even today. Based on their own words, Newt is the only candidate with a clear idea as to what he will do to get the nation turned around. Santorum is f*ing deer-in-the headlights clueless, Romney doesn't give a shit, and Paul is running for student council president.

And so-called conservatives are gibbering about Newt's hair style and marital misadventures. Beam me up Scotty, this country is doomed.

I like Rick, but I have deep reservations about him as the strongest candidate to run against Obama..and , as far as I’m concerned, getting Obama out of the White House is goal #1.

Sorry Rick.. I like you..but.

“I would think the main goal is to stop Obama.. if it’s Romney then it’s Romney and no matter how much conservatives may hate him and how pathetic the Republican candidates are, Obama is far worse.

I’m more worried about retaining the House and taking back the Senate.”

What? And they wont do that to either Newt or Mitt? That’s absurd. There’s TONS of stuff to go after Newt and Mitt on-especially Mitt on his numerous flip-flops, not to mention that with Mitt you lose both the Obamacare and Cap & Trade issue, and pretty much the abortion issue too, since Mitt’s been on both sides of that one.

Bottom line-fear of what the Dem hate machine/mainstream media will do to a candidate is no way to choose. We already know that all 3 will get beat up, so why not run with the guy who supports most of our principles?

For me, I would prefer Newt, but Rick will do. Anybody but Romney, that’s the bottom line.
