The Secretary of the Navy announced on Friday that a new littoral combat ship will be named after former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).
The announcement comes the same day that President Obama signed the last piece of legislation sponsored by Giffords, a bill aimed at reducing drug trafficking along the American borders with Canada and Mexico.
Giffords, who recently stepped down from office, was the target of a shooting rampage in early January 2011.
The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her, said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at a naming ceremony at the Pentagon Friday.
Giffords appeared at the ceremony with her husband, former Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed at the Giffords shooting last year.
Mabus said that Green would be the sponsor of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.
The ship named after Giffords is a littoral combat ship, a smaller ship designed for operations close to the shore. The USS Gabrielle Giffords is the Navys 10th LCS ship.

Based on the local Gabby Gazette and tv channels that give her air time 24-7, it doesn't appear that she can say more than two or three words at a time. And that the philandering husband is continually and literally puppeteering her, always behind her to raise her hand and so on. I highly doubt she's aware of what's going on, despite the stream of propaganda and spliced together interviews and media reports.
I think it is FANTASTIC!!!
After all, how can the Anti-Gun Brady Bunch rally round now? A BATTLE SHIP I BELIEVE HAS AND CARRIES LOTS OF GUNS!
Oh, the sweet irony of it all!!!
I thought this was from ‘The Onion’.
Jim, I objected when they selected Ford for the CVN 21 class ships for just that reason.
Jerry Ford’s service in WWII was undeniably heroic, but I still think it is totally gauche to name ships after living politicians.
As another poster said, I’ll make an exception for Reagan because no President in living memory was more beloved than the Gipper.
I thought this was from ‘The Onion’.
This “lady” voted with Pelosi 95% of the time, and turned on her own constituents in DeathCare. She and her family have long milked the City of Tucson millions each year for an empty toxic waste dump. Then, she left the district unrepresented for over a year until she could collect her cushy perks for life. Sorry, but that is pretty bad (and only a tiny sliver of her fascism).
Don’t worry, up next will be the USS Warren Buffett.
Pretty close, it was something like 95 or 96%.
Good to have the facts, always. Thanks, BQ...
Aww, Czar, my pleasure, and so nice to “see” you!
Yer hubby is spot on...wouldn’t want to be a plankowner. She is doomed before her keel is laid.
That being said, her keel will never be laid under Ubama.
If it had to be I was hoping for a garbage scow!
Agreed about The Onion - it still boggles my mind how we get these stories EVERY day giving us a clue as to just how bad it is going to get if we get 4 more years of the Obamanation. I pray that G. Giffords makes as complete a recovery as possible from her injury for her sake, but the idea of naming a Navy vessel after her is approaching the bottom of the barrel of political correctness and shameless pandering for votes by Team Obama.
Has he made a statement yet?
I sympathize, but if you do, you are going to have to accept a future CVN USS Obama. Obama, after his second term, will be at least as great (to the communists) as Reagan is to real Americans.
It's a bad business which never should have been started. If I were king, I'd go back to famous battles.
“If I were in Gifford’s position, I would have refused this honor”
Perhaps she’s not cognizant to understand it.
“I’d go back to famous battles.”
I heard Obama is thinking of names like
“Little Bighorn”
“Mai Lai”
etc.
Just give them another 4 years.
