Rick Santorum backed Arlen Specter over Pat Toomey in 2004. It was a tough race with Toomey mounting a credible, well-financed challenge.
Toomeys candidacy, by his own estimation, was one of the precursors to the Tea Party movement:
The battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party between big spending moderates and committed conservatives that was evident in 2004 may have inspired subsequent Tea Party efforts, Toomey suggested. Despite losing out on key endorsements from leading Republican figures in 2004, Toomey believes his primary campaign created a strong foundation for conservative activism that translated into victory in 2010.
Santorum not only backed Specter, he cut a commercial for him.

Stand firm Rick!
That is not true. He wasn't seated as a Senator when that was repealed. He just said he would vote to repeal. Now if he won the '04 race, you would be right.
I guess it ain’t as bad as putting Dede Scozzafava on SCOTUS
I find that photo unsettling every time I see it. There is a smile on Kennedy’s face but his eyes aren’t smiling. Every time I see that photo I think of how Satan must look when he corrupts and captures another soul. I wonder of Teddy saw that same expression when he was sent to his just “reward”.
that’s a heck of a stretch. Specter, was a bum, but this straw man just plain stinks.
Anyone but that socialist pig Romney!
uh, you can’t call something a lie without providing proof. That diary was, just that, a diary - it wasn’t represented as anything more. But the reviews at the time, were very positive. And apparently that guy Moran was there... he said a lot of not very nice things about Newt, which I assume had truth in them. I didn’t like reading them, but I didn’t call the guy a liar.
Did you read the book? It is available on Kindle, and on Amazon in hardcover... maybe paperback, not sure.
You Sanctimonium supporters have to get over this, every time somebody says something negative or unflattering about Tricky Ricky, you can’t just dismiss them and call them a liar, or get mean and nasty... not gonna work. NOT GONNA WORK.
I can’t imagine how much worse things would be if the Supreme Court had one more lib on it. I was mad at Santorum for a long time but now I think he did what he had to.
Specter and his team helped Santorum get elected. If he would have turned his back on him no one would have ever helped him again.
The rule of unintended consequences. Arlen Specter was running under the colors of the Republican party, and the big push is “go along to get along” among the Republican establishment. The establishment knew Specter was not a reliable conservative vote, they didn’t care, and there was probably more than a little pressure on Santorum to retain the seniority thing for Specter, as that was how the individual states were supposed to gain and retain clout on a national basis.
Seniority is a myth, an illegitimate award for time served, not for merit in any special expertise. Robert Byrd and Tedious Kennedy were examples of that end result, both having remained far beyond their range of capabilities and more like some musty example from the British Parliament’s House of Lords.
“But if Arlen Specter had to give up his seat, he would lose all that seniority!” The Establishment pulled out all the stops to assure that Specter could keep his precious seniority.
In the end, a bad trade, as Specter defected anyway.
Its complete and utter stupidity to try to take down one of the guys who stands in the way of Romney walking away with this this nomination.
Ya don’t need to love Santorum to recognize that.
Just today I heard Santorum asked if he was going to ask Gingrich to step out of the race. He said no.
Romney voted for Paul Tsongas instead of the Republican.
ObamaCare was NOT on the scene at the time, so Santorum is not to blame here. Sorry! Specter was not a conservative, but the three judges he got through the judiciary committee might not have made it without him. That is the honest truth. He was, as the judiciary committee chairman, relentless in taking up for the three excellent judges, knocking down the democratic machine to take them out of consideration. Today we benefit from their presence on the court. Had they not made it through, and Bush nominated lesser men/women for the positions, we’d be in a world of hurt. True, they are not always the majority, but we’d have no chance of a majority otherwise. If we take back the WH, we might have a couple more in the next 4 years. But, now I would think, given the treatment that Santorum received in exchange, that he is a bit wiser. Nobody is perfect, and we all learn from the mistakes we make, hopefully. Santorum was one of the conservatives that helped to get Newt’s Contract with America passed. Newt made mistakes, so did Santorum. I like Newt’s fighter instinct, but I’m seeing a renewed Santorum coming alive right now so this is getting interesting! May the better man win.
Anything posted by that nutcase Bill Collier on his "Freedomist" website should be immediately suspect to anyone.
There was a confidential room, which held the transcripts and the testimony of women Bill Clinton had harmed, and only members of congress were allowed to read the stuff. It apparently was very damning, and descriptive.
The talk about “witnesses” in the diary was about letting those women come forward... that is what the house repubs wanted... those women... so that the public could have a chance to see the accusers and weigh their stories...
The house republicans thought they had struck a deal with sanctimonium and lott - and the senate - that the women could testify live - but got doublecrossed.
I am no historian, and no expert certainly, but I have put these few pieces of that ancient history together... and yes, as a woman, a conservative woman, a woman who gets hit on all the time without doing one tiny thing to provoke it, I find that particularly upsetting... Apparently the Clinton line then was the women were sluts, or were rebuffed, but most of them came onto Clinton and were the initiators...
If you honestly think that’s true, how do you explain this?
Santorum voted to impeach Clinton on two counts.

It’s water under the dam. Get over it.
No candidate is perfect. Certainly not the alternatives.
David Schipper’s book, Sellout (2000), describes a scene on page 9 where the House Managers and a few others meet with two Republican Senators in a conference room.
The two were Senator Trent Lott and Senator Rick Santorum.
They informed the House Republicans that the Senate Republicans weren’t going to tolerate the House dumping their garbage on the Senate.
It was all politics. No Senators viewed any of the evidence possessed by the House.
Three weeks ago I knew very little about Rick Santorum. Today, I feel quite comfortable referring to him as Saint Rick the hypocrite.
Many are highly critical of Newt Gingrich, but he is an honest man. Rick Santorum is nothing of the sort.
In addition, I recommend people check this out.
