Gingrich’s Speech — How to Make a Bad Night Worse
The National Review ^ | February 5, 2012 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 02/05/2012 3:49:00 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Newt Gingrich’s post–Nevada caucus speech included about three minutes of inspired moments about issues and ideas in his usual imaginative and intellectually robust style. So why does he not just stay with that — given that he often seems more dynamic and glib than Romney in his attacks on Obama, and not long ago gained ground despite the attacks against him? Instead, he now turns ad nauseam to the tired reasons why he loses — yes, including lots of Mormons in Nevada — and ends up as Richard Nixon not going to get kicked around any more.

But whether he knows it or not, Gingrich is becoming a caricature of petulance: no concession in Nevada, no call to Romney, no awareness that his inability to raise money at levels of a political rival or to match a competing campaign organization is not necessarily unfair. That’s politics, and Gingrich knows it. I don’t understand why he thinks now losing to Romney in 2012 is solely due to Romney’s innate deviousness in a way McCain beating Romney in 2008 was not — given that Romney was about the same in both 2008 and 2012. Gingrich seems oblivious to the fact that McCain’s style and history gave him advantages over Romney’s money and hardball in ways Gingrich’s own proven liabilities apparently do not.

Gingrich should carefully play a tape of his post–Nevada caucus performance, and then he would quickly grasp that it was little more than a litany of excuses, whining, and accusations — characterized by stream-of-conscious confessionals and rambling repetitions. And, I think, will hurt him more than anything yet in the campaign.

NOW listen to the 22 minute Press Conference the GOP Establishment is panning as Newt's "Speech."

Newt Gingrich is giving the facts and the MSM (who can't control Mitt's incompetence and penchant for lying) are the ones who have started WHINING, MAKING EXCUSES AND HURLING ACCUSATIONS to protect their candidate, Mitt.

“and ends up as Richard Nixon not going to get kicked around any more. “

And then Nixon went on to win the Presidency.

Why would Newt concede anything, if he’s willing to fight on?

Well, I’m definitely supporting Newt over Romney but here lately, my man Newt has come across as a tired, angry, desperate old man. RINO-Rom comes across as fiery, fresh and friendly. I wish to goodness Newt would get a grip. He’s hurting himself.

Why are people surprised when NOOT acts like NOOT.
No I am not a Romney supporter or Paul.
If we wind up with Romney I will vote for him as I did in 2008 for Yosimity Sam.
My favorite left in the race is Rick: Rick has only two chances.
Very Slim and NONE.
We can't afford another 4 with the lop eared community organizer running the show, with what we have to choose from we just might wind up with another 4 with ZERO. . . . . .

Gingrich is in a series of contests where NOBODY is making 50% on a regular basis.

On the other hand, when you look at that race from a relatively simple point of view, that is, where are Conservatives voting, you find that the Conservatives are NOT voting for Mitt, and yet they are far more than 50% of the voters.

Now, more detail ~ without the Cubans in SE Florida, or the Mormons in Nevada, Mitt Romney would probably have not gotten as high a percentage as Newt.

Maybe nobody remembers the lesson of the 1992 primaries where it was Clinton vs Gore and Gore vs Clinton ~ and nobody was blowing it away. One day Clinton, who had exhausted all his campaign money, made a deal with Gore, who had ALL the campaign money anyone could ever want.

Gore accepted the VP position and Clinton got his and everybody else's campaign debts paid.

The labels sound pretty accurate to me. Y’all must have watched a different press conference to get all huffty and puffty.

“One day Clinton, who had exhausted all his campaign money, made a deal with Gore, who had ALL the campaign money anyone could ever want.”

The difference is Newt won’t make a deal. Even if that’s the smartest thing for him to do. But his opponents will be more than happy to make a deal.

Newt is becoming a caricature of himself.

VDH is sorta right here.

Newt just needs to stick to issues and inspiration. It’s what he’s good at. When you explain why you lost, even if what you’re saying is technically correct, it just comes across as whining, and makes people focus on the loss, instead of preparing for future victories.

Also, when you lay out detailed reasons why you lost, and try to demonstrate particulars in your argument, the simple fact of the matter is, a lot of people are simply not intelligent enough to follow the argument. To a stupid person, a complex argument is easily confused for making excuses or trying to obfuscate an issue.

When did Victor Davis Hanson become part of the MSM?

Your support for Perry was unrelentingly positive. Your new style certainly is not.

Why would Newt concede anything, if he’s willing to fight on? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Newt, in his Press Conference last night, indicated that he had, and will continue, to get just as nasty as Romney. The only alternative, he said, was to “get out of the race”. So, he’s willing to take this thing to the mat with RINO-Rom. That is perfectly alright with me because whomever our nominee is, he goes into the GE damaged goods anyhow. We've given Obozo and the Dems too much campaign fodder to use on either of these guys in the General Election. The GOP has once again pulled defeat from the jaws of victory, and, I don't really give a damn anymore. We may as well have a Marxist Muslim in the White House as a Marxist Mormon. So, let Obozo have four more years to finish destroying the Economy of this nation. We deserve what we get. Sad to say, but, I don't believe either of them can beat Obozo now. We can hope for a Brokered Convention and that a fresh face, like Jim DeMint or Paul Ryan, comes out the nominee, but that's not happening.

Looks like Newt critics are here rather than Newt supporters.

Some will SAY they support Newt but end up critics.

I watched the Presser and thought it reasonable, factually sound and forward looking.

But what do I know...I’m just a lowly former Rick Perry supporter.

Who (Perry), by the way, endorsed Newt and has vowed to help him.

My suspicions are aroused when people SOUND like the LSM while identifying as Conservatives and Romney opponents.

How do you know? If nobody gets a majority of delegates, then anything goes.

WHo is she supposed to be positive towards that you are criticizing her about...Victor Davis Hanson?

Since when did that become a necessity when we are discussing candidates?

We must not be negative towards the candidates’ negative critics??

Really?

There is a so called Conservative Media out there who has gone relentlessly negative on Newt and positive on Romney.

They are not immune from the critiques of ordinary Conservatives down here in the trenches.

Not in my book they’re not.

Maybe in yours.

What tripe. Making a concession call once the opponent has been chosen is one thing, they seem to think that Generals on the battlefield should pat each other on the back for individual battles when the war continues as they try to take each other out. I guess they also think that Mitt's ties to lots of money somehow makes him superior. God help us.

Only if you think so ~ I don't think anybody wants to make a deal with Mitt.

His reputation as a flipflopper was earned the hardway ~ by duplicity.
