The scientific community is holding its breath for a team of Russian scientists that has been out of contact with colleagues in the U.S for six days, as they drill into a lake buried beneath the Antarctic ice for 20 million years.
They have to evacuate their station by Tuesday - when winter proper kicks in and temperatures start to drop to an inhospitable minus 90C.
The scientists are currently battling conditions of up to minus 66C at Lake Vostok as they raced to drill into a lake buried two miles beneath the ice before the weather closed in.
They were hoping water in the lake, the most inhospitable region of the planet, would reveal more about ancient life on our planet - but they have fallen silent just days before the deadly winter is due to begin.

Since Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, don't they have 6 more weeks of summer down there?

I dont understand why this article implies winter is closing in.In a little over 6 weeks, they will be in permanent darkness until later this year. Yes, winter IS closing in.

The water inside the lake will have had no contact with man-made pollutants or Earthly life forms for millions of years.
NOT! Thousands maybe, not millions.

Russia apparently has a ruthless goon clause in its constitution... at least that’s they way they carry on when they get domestic Moose attacks. It seems to discourage these attacks!

If this was ocean, yes — however a freshwater lake in Antarctica might actually be pretty darn ancient. (And may have spent most of its existence being ice, not liquid water.)

Nice way to code your reply. I had to read it twice, but yes - they don’t look at negotiations (other than to stall). They look for low hanging fruit, like earlobes, half of Tupak, perhaps everything from a wrist outboard.
They do make their point, and their nationals now have a MUCH HIGHER chance of transiting that portion of the planet safely.

Russians, and it's only minus 66C -- they probably took their shirts off and are out sliding down hills.
To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. |

Sooner, rather than later, were going to have to team up with them to deal with China and the bearded ones. Exactly.
We and the Russian people are 'close cousins' - from the same stock. Put a bunch of Russians and Americans and English in a room - and without accents, there'd be no distinction. it would be like a family reunion party...and indeed, it would be - our family trees merge and not that far back.

Reminds me of the story of a Russian guide who died in Siberia after showing off to his clients how Russians chill their vodka while away from home. I have no idea whether it's true or not.
84 proof liquor freezes at -34.44°C (-30°F)
Well, guess we can rule out the Russian's traditional practice of chilling their vodka in a snow bank.
