Those who continue to believe that Romney can be stopped are focused as is the campaign of Newt Gingrich on the possibility of a long delegate fight. They have largely given up hope of anyone winning a knockout victory over Romney, hoping instead that some other candidate can prevent the former Massachusetts governor from wrapping the race up before the Republican National Convention, which is set for Tampa, Fla., in late August.
We have never gone through a delegate fight like this, said Bob Vander Plaats, an influential conservative and the head of the Iowa-based Family Leader organization. You need around 600 delegates to win, and I think that will be very difficult for Gov. Romney.
Vander Plaats added that the reason Gingrich has been emphasizing that there are 46 states to go in the contest is because he can do the math.
Similar themes are sounded by prominent conservatives in the media. Erick Erickson of Red State wrote Thursday that the fact that many states award their delegates proportionally, rather than on a winner-take-all basis, could play to Gingrichs advantage.
If Gingrich is serious about staying in till the convention, he could deny Romney a first ballot win and spare the base from the man they dont like, even if Newt himself cannot get the nomination. He is more of a long shot today than he was a day before Florida, but he can still be the nominee, Erickson wrote.

“they will have to forgo the strong desire to win national elections for awhile.”
As long as the establishment is setting the agenda and essentially controlling the GOP, the conservatives really are not winning anything. Nominating a Democrat like Romney is a good example of that- a Northeastern gungrabbing liberal who took the first steps towards socialized medicine shouldn’t even be considered as a Republican dogcatcher. And yet, that’s what they are doing. I wouldn’t think at this point its a matter of wanting to- its a matter of having to. The lengths to which the elites are going to select their candidate are proof that they only want conservative votes, and their candidate’s track record proves they don’t want conservative policy. With allies like that, who needs enemies?
You had better get your facts straight.
First of all, my post was about the 1986 race. Barbara Boxer ran in 1992, narrowly beating Bruce Herschensohn, a solid conservative for whom I worked my heart out. Herschensohn would probably have won if President Bush hadn't abandoned California during his re-election campaign.
And why should Dianne Feinstein thank me? After all, I did vote for her opponent, the Republican incumbent John Seymour (pronounced "see more," as in "see more taxes"), whom Pete Wilson appointed to fill his old Senate seat when he was elected governor, even though Seymour was a pro-abortion in-your-face liberal.
Dont support Newt. He would lose big among women voters.

Newt has no problem with women having equal rights..
The one with the baggage as far as women go is Romney
That women are 2nd class citizens owned by their husbands wont win him a lot of votes...

Yes because usually the conservatives let the establishment jam some moderate down our throats. This year we are a little peeved about it.
Write ins do not count in Virginia.
I’ll vote constitution party, if Romney is the GOP candidate.
I’m AM going to vote for an alternative. I will not vote for either of the two Alinsky disciples, Obama and Romney.
Damn right he won't.
Before this is over, he'll wish he was a dog strapped to the roof of a car.
That's because it is not really a political party but a disorganized group of pissed off REAL AMERICANS.
If the mormon bishop and the RNC elite succeed in buying the GOP nomination, then the Tea Party fields a candidate for POTUS, and becomes a real political party dedicated to the destruction of the Washingtonians.
I'm for letting the communists own the collapse.
Putting the blue blood country clubbers in for another 8 years is just putting off the inevitable.
Time coming soon to hit the reset button on this Republic and wipe the slate clean, and that means taking out the Washingtonians from both parties.
Used to think that if DC were nuked by the muzzies, it would be a crippling blow.
Sick thing is that it would probably be the best thing ever to happen to the American citizen.
After the US goes the way of the USSR.
You obviously haven't the slightest idea what Obama is.
I think Reagan lost the first five primaries, but Rick and Newt each won a contest, so the race is very wide open.
In this, you are mistaken.
Nope. Not going to do it again.
BTW. The collapse is coming. If Willard somehow wins the presidential election he will continue the same ridiculous spending and it will happen on the Republican's watch.
My wife has a friend who belongs to the LDS Church. her friend told her that she had many misgivings about Romney and that this has togo to the RNC if need be..
My understanding in Tennessee that write-ins are allowed but they have to be registered.
Write-ins are not allowed in VA that I’m aware of.
“Are write-in votes counted in Virginia?”
No. Not in the primary. While the law doesn’t specifically prohibit the GOP from counting write-ins, they’re not required to either. This is the same group who decided to drop Gingrich and Perry from the ballot, so I wouldn’t plan on them opting to count write-ins.
I just did a search. There is a petition out for write-in votes
