In some of his harshest words yet, Newt Gingrich explained Friday why he didn't call rival Mitt Romney after the former Massachusetts pulled a decisive Florida primary victory earlier in the week.
Pointing to Romney's post-South Carolina campaign strategy, which turned noticeably negative against the former House speaker, Gingrich said Romney didn't earn any kudos.
"They outspent me five to one to quote destroy Newt Gingrich?" Gingrich said in an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer." "You know, I think that doesn't deserve congratulations. I think that's reprehensible, I think it's dishonest, and I think it's shameful."
Gingrich took heat over not making the call after Romney's win on Tuesday, given that the former Massachusetts governor had congratulated Gingrich for his South Carolina win just 10 days prior.
Meanwhile, Romney's other rivals, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, both picked up the phone on Tuesday.
"The other candidates all called, but I guess Speaker Gingrich doesn't have our phone number," Romney said Wednesday on NBC's "Today."
While campaigning ahead of Nevada's Saturday caucuses, Gingrich has largely maintained that Romney's full-throated attack strategy in Florida would come back to haunt him, arguing that voters prefer a positive campaign.
"Pretty hard to see how somebody is going to negatively carpet-bomb their way to the nomination," Gingrich said Friday on CNN. "Pretty hard to see how that nomination is going to be worth much if that's all they've got to show for themselves."
The candidate said he had no regrets over not making the traditional phone call.

That’s very good! -:)
I just dont think this serves any purpose.
*************
I think right about the potential of the “sore loser” tag. But, I think the purpose it serves for Newt is he wants to create controversy; he wants the media to know that he’s committed to going forward;and Romney to know that he
is no where near ready to assent to his coronation
I can imagine that if the liberal media thought Gingrich needed a smack-down, they’d just compare this to the time Gingrich was put on the back of Air Force One.
That they don’t suggests to me that at this moment, they have no desire to damage Newt Gingrich. They are having too much fun with Romney “I don’t care about the poor” (like they once did with their misleading quote of Newt about Medicare “Withering on the Vine.”
Newt might have to develop thicker skin. However, I am glad he didn’t call Romney. I think it is this type of stupid stuff like this, that help create the ruling class we are in today. Maybe, right now there isn’t time for the phoney protocall, and focus on issues. Seems like Newt is more focused on his campaign and the country, while Romney is focused on protocall. Newt might look like a baby, and can handle this better, but I would be tempted to do the same exact thing.
Thank you. I think it is EXACTLY like that, and Newt is right that it’s shameful, dishonest, reprehensible, and doesn’t deserve congratulations.
Romney is as evil for attacking Newt on that point as Harding would have been had she done the same to Kerrigan.
I hope people with more influence than me will make a point to express that to the public at large.
Newt knew the winner take all was being challenged....Newt at this very moment is ahead in the tally....Bet you didn’t know that...The MSM hasn’t covered that little fact.
“Reminds me of the little tantrum the Salamander had after Slick Willy put him in the back of Air Force 1. Thin skinned is something I dont want in a President, and I dont expect from a life long politico.”
On an earlier thread, you said;
“I wont vote for Gingrich because he has no honor, no self-discipline or organization, and because , aside from the positions hes taken on things like global warming, I think of him as the A.D.D candidate. Hes all over the place, all the time.”
I find no thread where you have a favorite candidate - maybe I missed it? Maybe Jim Rob can find one.
Too bad the facts don’t back up their previous post.
Dear Newt: Romney outspent you because you have no money and you are massively in debt. Why do you have no money?
So are you a ROMNEY SUPPORTER?
I have to agree with Newt. Romney has run an unusually negative campaign. It’s not right for him to try to totally destroy another more conservative Republican. However, I admit that I am biased - “I root for Newt!”
You are correct. No favorite candidate.
Nope. I don’t support any of the Four Horsemen.
*And by the way, his speech after his loss was very magnanimous. *
Here it is, FWIW
