Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has a lot on his mind these days, from cutting the defense budget to managing the drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. But his biggest worry is the growing possibility that Israel will attack Iran militarily over the next few months.
Panetta believes there is strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June before Iran enters what Israelis described as a zone of immunity to commence building a nuclear bomb. Very soon, the Israelis fear, the Iranians will have enough enriched uranium in deep underground facilities to make a weapon and only the U.S. could then stop them militarily.

To the headline: one can hope.
I think they’ve been preparing for years. It is interesting that this thread was preceeded by this one:
Massive U.S. Military Buildup Reported Around Iran; Up To 100,000 Troops Ready By March

Actually, I hope Israel does just that. Obviously, the US doesn’t have the balls to do it. Thank you, Driveler-in-Chief.
zone of immunity
I think it is also called a “point of no return”. I believe that just before a similar “zone of immunity” Israel peformed Operation Babylon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Opera
Yes, they sent me a freepmail.
If Israel had attacked Iran every time a news article appeared with "Israel to attack Iran in X months," there would be nothing left of it.
May 20th (Jerusalem Day) Would be a great day.
I think the Isreali’s will not attack until after our elections. I think it is worth the risk giving the Iranians more time on the chance of getting a friendly admin in the white house who will be able to keep the Chicoms and the Russians out of the conflict.
I think the feeling is that Israel isn’t going to take a gamble on that. They are not going to let Iran get to the point where their own military can no longer do the job (using conventional force) and they have to depend on someone else, friendly or not, for their own security.
I don’t know that they want our help militarily, I think they would like us to make it economically wise for the Chicoms to stay out of it. That said, I guess it does come down to how long the Israeli’s think they have until Iran can deliver a nuke.
No country has Israel’s level of motivation in this matter.
I predict that if this comes to pass, the Chicoms will
acclimate themselves to the situation, because ultimately
the indivdual Chicom serviceman has no wish to die for
Iran to stop an IDF strike.
There will be intemperate language and diplomatic note exchanges w/exaggerated font sizes (maybe even italics!)
but no serious fallout.
Israel’s leadership knows Obama and his lackeys are weak. They’ll have to be the grown ups in the world until BO is replaced next January.
The (unnamed sources in the) Admin added something for this article. It is VERY non-committal about MAYBE aiding Israel, but only AFTER their cities are hit by Iran.
I believe it!!!
