Can I just say somthing, and maybe you can figure it out, because I can’t... I probably converted 300 people over to Newt in Florida leading up to today... they were mostly young, military, parents and seniors... not real young college, but some postgrad types... even a few paultards; not one of them, had any issue with newt’s anticapital bain stuff... and frankly, neither did I... there are excesses in Capitalism that are really ugly and greedy... that doesn’t make all of it bad, or that the mealy parts shouldn’t be spoken about.
I was so surprised to find out how capitalism is the holy grail of conservatism, and no one shall speak ill of it at all. I understand from listening to Mark Levin, how it is the mainstay of liberty, but no man and no earthly instutution is perfect, and actually a lot of people reacted positively to Newt taking on Romney’s ugly business dealings, and then were more open to listening to him otherwise... I mean some dems, also... so don’t know what’s up with that..
so dont know whats up with that..
Well I do. Its called populism and it turns my stomach.
There is a misnomer going on with “Capitalism” in the New GOP.
Long gone are the days of Adam Smith. Today’s GOP, especially in the Northeast, is not “Conservative” in their Capitalism - they are Libertarian Fiscal Darwinists. They want ANYTHING goes, and no recourse for the consumer.
Do NOT confuse Capitalism as espoused by good Conservatives like Adam Smith with what the GOP Establishment and the Chamber tell you is “Capitalism” today. To them, the old woman who gets conned out of her life savings should be S.O.L. because “she should have known better.” And hey, if we can Privatize the Supreme Court, why should anyone oppose it?
Space program? Trash it! Infrastructure? Sell the rights to the Chinese if they are the highest bidder! Remember bankruptcy reform? Anyone notice it only applied to citizens and not corporations?
This is not what the fathers of Capitalism ever had in mind. They were Free Market, small government visionaries - but even a base knowledge of Smith’s writings would show you a very different vision than the self-proclaimed champions of modern Capitalism.
They heard the truth from you. Perhaps, the never listened to the debates or didn't understand what was going on and just listened to the media for how they should think.
I probably converted 300 people over to Newt in Florida leading up to today.
Excellent job!!! You have the truth in you and I believe they saw it so they were open to receive what you said. They somehow knew what they already heard was not truth and probably uncomfortable with it.
Bless your heart!
I agree. Mark Levin surprised me a bit there, too. He sometimes talks about how we're conservatives, not libertarians or anarchists. In other words, we should generally support capitalism, private property rights, and liberty. For example, we don't allow businesses to dump hazardous chemicals in our rivers if that's what's most profitable for them. There are limits. As conservatives, we respect our ideals, but we aren't supposed to be blind slaves to them.
From what I've read about Romney's business dealings, Bain purchased companies only to plunder them by borrowing vast sums that the companies couldn't possibly ever repay, and then they left taxpayers to foot part of the bill. If that's true, it's despicable even if it's legal. That doesn't mean it needs to be illegal, but Mitt sure shouldn't be defended for it.
