NBC/Marist Poll: Romney Up 15 Over Gingrich In Florida

Mitt Romney may be on his way to a decisive victory in the Florida GOP primary Tuesday, according to a new NBC/Marist poll.
Romney leads Newt Gingrich by 15 points, 42 percent to 27 percent in the crucial state. Rick Santorum is third with 16 percent, followed by Ron Paul with 11 percent. Just 4 percent said they were undecided. "The bottom line in all this is Romney's sitting in the driver's seat going into Tuesday," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion at Marist College, who conducted the poll.
If Romney pulls off a victory of that magnitude, he could be on a glide path to the nomination. But there are warning signs for the Republican Party that the primary has taken a toll on Romney and the rest of the GOP field. Each of the candidates struggles in a general-election matchup with President Barack Obama in this swing state, especially with independents.

How Romney wins: Consolidates supporters, women
Romney beats Gingrich and the rest of the field by winning broadly across many subgroups -- those who are not Tea Party supporters (52 percent), those who are liberal or moderate (49 percent), make more than $75,000 a year (49 percent), identify as "conservative" (47 percent), and, in particular with women.
There was a stark gender gap between Romney and Gingrich. Women said they preferred Romney by 47-26 percent over Gingrich. The gap is closer with men, but Romney leads with them as well, 38-29 percent.
"He's winning both," Miringoff said, "but runs up the score among women."
Romney also does well enough with Tea Party supporters, splitting the vote....

Gingrich didn’t attack capitalism. Questioning somebody’s business practices, especially after that person has made unfounded and misleading claims on the basis of that business, is perfectly legitimate. You are aware that it was the practices of firms like Romney’s and Warren Buffet’s that led to the huge number of seniors who lost their pensions in things like airlines and other major industries in the 1980’s and early 90’s, right?
Gingrich’s position on illegal immigrants is perfectly conservative and realistic, knowing that we can’t wave a magic wand and we have to develop policies that reflect reality. Romney never even really says what his is, because he knows he would give a general amnesty immediately and then never even deal with the basic issues.
I wouldn’t trust a man who comes from a religion that believes in polygamy (although they were forced to renounce this as a condition of Utah’s becoming a state), whose family fled to Mexico (with his several great grandmothers) to avoid arrest, and who thinks he’s going to get his own planet stocked with willing ladies when he dies. Yuck.
As for Gingrich, the first wife was a lot older than he was, had seduced him with a teenager, and they were estranged (she asked for the divorce but they were on good terms afterwards). His second wife, obviously a rebound, was somebody who made a career out of stalking married men (she was involved with another married man when she latched onto him, probably because she perceived him as more powerful) and they had a legal separation agreement that permitted both of them to date other people at the time that he met his third wife (Callista).

Newt had moved ahead after the debates a couple of days before the primary.
This isn’t a poll of GOP voters, it’s a poll of registered voters. Not GOP voters, not likely GOP primary voters, just regular voters.
Only 31% of poll respondents planned to vote in the GOP primary.
Only 46% of poll respondents disapproved of Barack Obama’s performance.
The poll is worthless as far as predicting the outcome of the GOP primary in Florida.

This is so true. There's an old about selling yourself before you can sell anything else, and unfortunately charm and charisma doesn't spring to mind when I think of either one of our candidates.
I love Newt, but his past popularity numbers even among his own party are dismal. Unfortunately Obama has that charm the birds off the trees type of personalities, and that's going to be hard to beat. Also, unless I'm wrong, there are more of "them" than there are of us.
They’re only supposed to seat 50 as a penalty for holding the primary early, but I think last time they ended up letting all 100 sit anyway. You can be sure that this year if those extra 50 are what puts Mitt over-the-top, they’ll flip-flop and accept them.

Sounds very much like liberal spin. These polls are not to be believed at face value. Please don’t discount prayer. I would hope everyone pulling for Newt will spend some time in prayer for his winning on Tuesday.
Libs want Romney, they know they have to take out Gingrich first. You want the cub, first get rid of the lion.
Newt’s already for 0% corporate income tax and 15% flat income tax.
He lost Iowa and New Hampshire and is losing Florida because he did not focus on attacks on Romney’s Bain Capital record. He won South Carolina precisely because he focused on Romney’s Bain Capital record there. Romney’s record at Bain Capital is one of a coldhearted, unethical “buyout baron” and corporate raider who helped bankrupt companies and kill American jobs. It makes him unelectable either in a Republican primary or in the general election. When it’s made the focus of a campaign, he loses. There is no other way to defeat him unless the electorate is heavily stacked with hardcore ideological conservatives. If Romney is allowed to use his business record as a positive, he wins. If his opponents highlight his unseemly business practices, that adds a negative to his resume at the same time it takes away a positive, and he loses.
Women support Romney? Interesting, my wife can’t stand him and voted for Newt in pre polling. Something about looking like a snake oil salesman she said.
I’ve heard clips of Rubio’s speeches and couldn’t get through them. It sounded like phony hot air to me, like an Obama speech. Not quite as phony as a Romney speech though. I agree Rubio’s overrated and think he’ll prove himself to be counted by most people in the RINO camp soon enough.
One thing Coulter used to be dead-on right about is when she said the country started going downhill after that, because women consistently support liberalism and socialism. I don’t think any Republican president has ever lost when strictly counting the male vote.
And we all know that 50 state plans will not work. Eventually there’d be chaos and so many conflicts with whatever’s remaining of federal obamacare, they’d have to consolidate it under federal auspices.
No different than the states being allowed to issue their own coinage. Didn’t work, can’t work, mustn’t happen.

Romney’s first act as president would be to rename obamacare: Articles of Medical Confederation. The result would be as much fun as the original AoC. None!
