Germany is pushing for Greece to relinquish control over its budget policy to European institutions as part of discussions over a second rescue package, a European source told Reuters on Friday.

"There are internal discussions within the Euro group and proposals, one of which comes from Germany, on how to constructively treat country aid programs that are continuously off track, whether this can simply be ignored or whether we say that's enough," the source said.

The source added that under the proposals European institutions already operating in Greece should be given "certain decision-making powers" over fiscal policy.

Amazing, really.

Greece goes to war because they needed a bailout and got one From the Germans. When they wouldn’t just agree to write it off and let them continue to spend like a hooker with a stolen credit card, the Greeks decide to go to war.

I can actually see that happening.

Nope.

They should default and leave the Euro.

So should Spain and Portugal.

The Greeks are, or will become, indentured servants.

The Greeks deserve it. Greece is bankrupt and if they want to keep much of their social welfare state they will have to allow Germany to be their trustee. Of course the Greek people could do the smart thing, abandon the Euro, default and actually create a free market economy that will make them the envy of Europe - but we all know they'd rather maintain a welfare state.

You hit the nail on the head. Germany was not going to sit around forever and allow people in Greece to retire in their late 40s and sip tea by the sea.

If the Greek Military doesn’t like it they may take back control of the country in a coup, wouldn’t be the first time. Either that or one by one the PIIGS become German “protectorates”. We do live in interesting times!

This is essentially what the IMF does for a living. The lending lead is not the IMF however

They loan money and in return take over the economy by insisting on stringent change. Steve Forbes rants about their methods almost once a month.

The fact is though the medicine seem to cure although it seems to horrible. Nations do get over it and return to better health

The Germans don’t need troops anymore—just bureaucratic accountants—to take over. The troops will come later to enforce German will. When they come —it will be in airplanes.

This would be political suicide.

The germans would be facing product suicide. As it stands now their autos are not selling well not only due to ecconomics but a silent boycott.

“Europe will be at war within five years.”

With whom using what? Europeans won’t give up their something-for-nothing welfare states to have real militaries. And what would they fight over? Who gets to own the national debt of Greece, Portugal, Italy, and Spain?
