Gingrich Maintaining Grip on New Lead [Gallup national daily tracking poll]

"Romney slumps to 24%, his lowest level since before Iowa caucuses"

PRINCETON, NJ -- Republican registered voters nationally continue to prefer Newt Gingrich over Mitt Romney for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, with no sign in Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 22-26 that Gingrich is giving back any of his recent gains.

The 32% of Republican voters now choosing Gingrich as the candidate they are most likely to support for the nomination is his highest level of support since the 2012 primary voting began in early January. The 24% supporting Romney is his lowest. Despite the heavy media focus on the two front-runners, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum are each holding their own at just under 15%, putting the two men in a statistical tie for third.

Bottom Line

As the Jan. 31 Florida primary nears, Gingrich remains at the top of the GOP field in national Republican preferences for the nomination, and his eight-percentage-point lead over Romney, in second place, is his widest since mid-December.

Gingrich's latest eclipsing of Romney occurred in Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 19-23. That interviewing period spanned the South Carolina debate, as well as the South Carolina primary, which Gingrich handily won. Since then, Gingrich has not only maintained the lead but expanded it slightly, indicating that Romney's sharpened rhetoric, combined with various attacks on Gingrich by such major Republican Party figures as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Bob Dole, hasn't been particularly harmful.

I understand. We are coming to the same conclusion. In fact, had that discussion today about leaving Cali. We hate to leave the kids here....but, you know how that goes!

-- He's going to caucus states, like yours. --

Ahh, I found a recent remark attributed to Santorum's campaign ...

"We have staff in Colorado. We have staff in Nevada. We have grassroots programs underway in both of those states," Santorum said. "We are in the process of - we've got some volunteers doing similar things in Minnesota, but we don't have a staff there in Minnesota or Maine. We're focused more on Nevada and Colorado. We think there are maybe better opportunities for us. And we also have ... a lot of folks helping us in Missouri for the primary vote there coming up in."

They mean nothing but they also do mean something.

They indicate whether the attacks on Newt have had a larger impact and where the momentum is trending in this race. So far Romney hasn't resurged but a FL win could flip the national numbers as he coasts through Feb. picking up delegates in friendly territory like Nevada (heavily Mormon) and Michigan (birth state, daddy was governor).

Reports of Gingrich behind Romney again. I really think Gingrich could have done more last night to take the thunder away from Santorum and Romney (who really blasted Gingrich early on). Apparently Gingrich later said he was so surprised by Romney's dishonesty that he didn't know how to answer until he checked the facts later to be sure.

But I think Gingrich could have really fired back and launched some spot-on points about things like the trillion-dollar deficit, less, not more, government programs, etc. I think he probably missed his queue right at the starting gate when Blitzer baited him into a swipe at Romney. In the past, Gingrich has successfully called the moderator on that kind of stuff. (He did later but not as effective.)

I'm actually wondering if Gingrich's handlers influenced him the last couple of debates to play a "prevent defense" (almost always fails) instead of putting on a full-court press (i.e. defensively keep from losing instead of offensively going all out for the win).

Hope for the best.

I think the early voting in Florida may hurt Newt other than that he is probably winning. Hope he can pull it out in Florida.

Newt needs to get off the defense and go on the offense! The Romney organization is very savvy at getting their attacks out at the most crucial moments..right before a debate or an election. Newt’s org needs to stay on top of this and plaster Drudge and the msm with big time bashes on Mitt. IF a reporter asks Newt about the attacks..Newt should do a Romney and say, “he hasn’t seen it” Time to NEWTER ROMNEY

Indeed I did and after watching the debate last night and hearing the crowd clap when Romney said to Rick over Romney health care"no need to get angry" or words to that effect, then I knew the crowd was all staged. BTW I talked to another freeper today on here who lives in my county who also said that they tried to get tickets but could not. Now my county is St Johns a very republican county which is next to Duval and i know of no one from here who got tickets.

If you mean on Free Republic, they were on Santorum victory threads trashing Santorum.

Which probably doesn’t endear them to Santorum supporters.

Class, people.

And take off the d**n sweater, Rick.

The most telling day is yet to come. We shall see.
