SANTA FE, N.M. — Republican Gov. Susana Martinez suffered a temporary political setback Thursday in a bid to stop New Mexico from granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

But church leaders and immigrant rights advocates disagreed, saying a driver’s license is critical for immigrants living and working in New Mexico, many with U.S.-born children. The push to repeal New Mexico’s law is stirring an anti-immigrant sentiment, they said.

“I think it is about immigration ... it is about divisiveness,” said Santa Fe Mayor David Coss. “We should stop calling people in our community illegal aliens.”

Instead of being a nation of laws supporters want nation a of diverse,”laws. Not U.S. laws.

They intentionally left the adjective “Illegal” out of the headline - tells me everything I need to know about this paper.

From the Albuquerque Journal yesterday

In one instance, 48 foreign nationals claimed to live at a smoke shop in Albuquerque to get a license. In another case, more than a dozen claimed to live at an automotive repair shop over a one-year period. The scenario has been repeated at other addresses since New Mexico changed its law in 2003 to allow illegal immigrants to get the same driver’s license as a U.S. citizen

How about we call them trespassers? Maybe the Gov should take a page from obies book and just bypass the legislators and just do whatever she likes? And, what else would you expect from Santa Fe’s mayor?

Former New Mexico dweller. Go HORNETS!

The fact that this is even UP for discussion, shows just how screwed up America is fast becoming.

We are nearing the point of no return.

The governor is the one trying to stop the issuing of DLs to illegals. Get a grip or try reading the article now and then.

I understand she wants to stop them. My comment was that she could do like obie and just put out an order to stop issuing the DL’s to them. Kind of like “I can’t wait on the legislators to act so I will just do what I have to do.”

Thanks for pinging the list. I read in the paper that she would veto the alternate bill if it passed the legislature.
