Gingrich hates the media, right? He unloaded on John King at the Charleston debate for raising this issue of his ex-wife's allegations, blasting the "destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media". In Myrtle Beach, he slapped Juan Williams down for asking a race-based question.
And the media despises Newt, right? He's so sarcastic and condescending towards us, brands us as elite liberals and uses us to whip up the Republican base.
Actually, wrong and wrong.
Gingrich loves the press...

Gingrich does not avoid the media, but engages them, so they "love" each other or are "secret pals."We should ignore the intense hostility the MSM has shown to Gingrich and ignore how he bloodies them in these encounters. They would instead have us believe that the General who has no fear of the enemy, who seeks out and engages that enemy should NOT be trusted; and that we should instead trust the General who avoids that enemy.Romney avoids them and does not engage them so they do not like each other.
But the writer of this article betrays himself in the following excerpt:
By contrast, Romney very rarely engages with reporters - which makes a lot of sense in terms of message discipline but can lead to frustration within the media and accusations of being a programmed "Romneybot". Strangely enough, in this respect he is a little like Barack Obama, who in the 2008 campaign hardly ever yukked it up with reporters in the way Gingrich does.
Toby is a good reporter and better than most American ones on this.
"And it's mutual."
"In South Carolina, it was an open secret that the press were rooting for Gingrich..."
Pure Propaganda!
He’s uses them when necessary and then kicks them in the teeth when necessary. He’s a smart cookie!
I listened to the NPR story this morning about the race. It was all about Romney, and how he’s now attacking Gingrich on his resignation as house speaker and what he’s been doing the last 15 years. And how much of Gingrich’s side did we get? A couple of short quotes.
Think about this within the context of the story: Gingrich pulled off a huge shellacking of Romney.
If that story wasn’t biased toward Romney, there is no media bias.
And in my 50 minute drive to work, I got to hear that story, in it’s entirety, twice.
Newt knows how to use the Media, and use them he does.
Using the Media does not mean he agree’s with it or loves it.
Too bad Boehner has absolutely no knowledge in this area.
I don’t see how Romney come out ahead in any debate with Newt.
1. Romney slams Newt on being a DC insider...Newt finally says...look we’ve been down this path before. Had you run as a democrat years ago maybe you’d be a DC insider now.
2. Romney slams Newt on Freddie Mac...ethics etc. Newt says...look, why can’t we knock off all the negative bickering and talk about the issues. Why not you and I debate each other, no moderator for one hour, and we can clear up the facts for the American public. You can have all the time you want to refute what’s being said about you, and I can do the same. THEN we can talk about what is on everyone’s mind...and that is how we beat Obama.
3. Romney slams Newt for not being conservative enough etc. Newt gives same answer as #2.
4. Etc. I don’t see how anyone is going to get under Newt’s skin.
Newt knows how to play the media game and lives by the rules of the Godfather,"Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer".
The fact that Newt has discovered that every time he bitch slaps some media wimp, his rating go up, doesn't change the fact that he knows that smoozing the media whores in private gets him a better reaction on the background crap.
The newser long knives are out in full force on Newt ...
Let's face it, Newt would be damned if he did try to get along with the jerks, and damned if he didn't.
NPR is the worst at that kind of bias. Have we de-funded them yet?!
Newt is going to be their #1 target ever since he played it VERY well during the Clinton years regarding the balanced budget, etc. He outwitted them back then and they know it!
He can only defeat the media by engaging and using them. They know that and they know they can't avoid him. Thus their tactic of trying to discredit his use of the media to attack the media.
Welcome to the logic of the drive by media.
They will do anything to defeat Gingrich, even sticking him as "buds" with the media because they know the people despise them.
If Newt is regarded as a close friend of the media, then Newt will suffer some of the disgust the people feel towards the media.
When Newt takes on the media, it is really not Newt taking them on, eh? The drive by media basically asks the question, "who are you going to believe, the lib/commie media or your own lying eyes and ears?"
Newt it too media savvy and comfortable on camera to be roped by Mittens on these issues.
Rom’s handlers are making a big mistake by having a guy that only is good at canned answers engage Newt on that territory.
He simply does not maneuver well enough to withstand a Newt counterattack.
You could also say freerepublic also loves the press because 90% of all threads begin with press stories such as this one. If it wasn’t for the press, FR would only consist of blog pimps and vanities.
Pretty easy to tell what’s going on here.
The media see how much they’re hated by the response of folks at the debates when Newt neuters them with a withering response.
So, what do you do when you’re hated and want to take someone down? You claim the person you’re wanting to take down is just like you, or one of your own.
The media will kick a conservative in the jublies when he’s not looking, every time.
Newt’s kicking them back. And conservatives, who are just “up to here” with media bias, are enthusiastically supporting someone that’s kicking them back.
I agree. And I’m not going to automatically dismiss his thoughts as “propaganda.”
That said, I think he may underestimate the malleability of Newt Gingrich.
OTOH, I think those who are enthralled with Newt’s smackdowns of the media may be in for a large surprise if he gets the White House. He’ll change his tune toward the media because he’ll have to. For one thing, his conduct now may be great on the campaign, but it’s nowhere near presidential.
I listen to them to “keep tabs on the enemy”. Plus, you would not believe the clout it gives me when I debate on liberal sites.
