What is it about this primary season that causes Republicans to go around the bend? The current beneficiary of the anyone but Romney mania is Newt Gingrich, who may actually win the South Carolina primary tomorrow. I find that astonishing. Gingrich has been mostly out of the public view since he retired from Congress 13 years ago. The most surprising feature of this endlessly surprising political year is that, at age 68, Gingrich has made a comeback.
It is hard to make clear-cut statements about the mercurial and often contradictory Gingrich, but one thing we can say with absolute certainty: he will never be President of the United States. Put aside the fact that he lasted only four years as Speaker of the House before resigning in disgrace, leaving Congress with an approval rating around 15%. Forget that he was the father of the earmark. Never mind his notorious lack of self-control and his attacks on free enterprise. Those are all worthy topics for another day, but for the moment lets just focus on the allegations by Newts second ex-wife that hit the press this week. Apart from all the other good reasons why Gingrich will never be President, Marianne Gingrichs sensational allegations snuffed out any possible hope that Newt can beat Barack Obama in 2012.

I've done my time in rinoland and in 2012 I'm not knowingly voting for yet another GOP establishment rino. McCain was the last rino I voted for and how did that turn out? We still got obama!
This kind of stuff has been occurring in the last few days.
You’re making odd assertions here.
You say Newt came out of nowhere.
Cain is old news but when he ran he was the ultimate in ‘came out of nowhere’ and he got huge support.
Santorum didn’t come out of nowhere but his political career had been nonexistent since his ignominious defeat for senate. He’d been wandering in the political wilderness.
Romney had a term as governor, ran for president when McCain was nominated and is best known for Romney-care.
We won’t even discuss Ron Paul, but he, at least, didn’t come out of nowhere.
Newt led the country to the first majority in the House since dinosaurs roamed the earth. We are still reaping benefits from the good things he did during that period.
The only entrants who were currently serving in politics were Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul and Rick Perry.
Perry was the perfect candidate but various factors - none of them particularly meaningful - conspired against him.
He’s gone now and we have three valid candidates remaining.
We’ve none Newt’s negatives all along and most of us decided his positives outweighed them.
Romney needs to drop out. He is a regional candidate who only has appeal to coastal elites and North Eastern Rinos.
If I wanted support Romney, I would say so, I don’t wnat to support the author of Obamacare or a Mormon.
If Newtie had changed, he wouldn’t have come across so indignant. A little humility is called for. He also wouldn’t have said poor Mariane is a liar.
It looks and sounds like he hasn’t learned. It looks and sounds like he wants a pass. Do you have a link to an article where the dude actually apologizes? If so please please post it.
Haven’t been IBTZ lately. Feels good.
I don’t think people should be zotted for expressing an honest opinion.
Maybe for flooding the site with continuous, stupid posts, but not for one or two posts we don’t agree with.
This kind of post is an opportunity to refute the posters arguments and cite positives of our own.
I think he will, counting on platitudes and big words and the media relishing him for what a great thinker he is
People like you who have given up should STFU and stop posting! YOU are the problem!
I quit going to Powerline when Hinderaker endorsed Mitt, more specifically because of his reasons.
Something just doesn’t feel right about the Romney “electability” meme. Hinderaker, and others in the Republican establishment, are ascribing far greater power to the media than they now deserve.
We have a history to observe in the fact that the media shilled for each and every Democrat that was defeated in the 2010 elections. We elected scores of Republicans to local, state and congressional offices, many of whom had what the media considered to be “baggage”, both personal and professional. We elected an evangelical as Governor of Virginia. We elected divorced candidates. We elected pro-life, pro-gun conservatives in bastions of liberalism, across this country. The media did everything they could to keep these conservatives from being elected.
Sure, Newt has baggage. Does anyone think the media won’t attempt to destroy Romney if he were to gain the nomination?
We’re tired of the media setting the agenda. We want someone who questions the premises of their silly debate questions. We want a fighter. We want a SHERIFF.
I agree with Rush, who says that conservatism can win without attempting to “go toward the middle” or water-down our beliefs to capture the vaunted independents.
The country is in an angry, fearful mood. Newt is a gunslinger that the media has painted as mean. Heck, we want mean. We need mean. We want a sheriff with guns he’s willing to fire at those who threaten us. We’re angry. Newt’s the one who said Barney Frank and Chris Dodd should go to jail. We’re afraid, and we don’t think Romney will protect us.
Newt not only can win, Newt will win.
If Hindraker says never, it means Newt can win!
There are things about the G man that I don’t like
but if Obama can be president, then a man like Newt
can shine in the office.
Let’s see what SC does.
I think that thought is the driving force behind each and every candidate that has-even for a moment-been on the top of the pile.
Voters are tired of the house, the senate, the prez, heck, even the local pols, that take, take, take, take, and Tell us what we should eat, drink, think, and live.
Sarah had a short time up there because she was feisty and ready to rumble.
Cain got his shot because HE appeared to be ready to rumble.
I think Newt sees how starved we are for a fighter, someone who will take it to them, rather than quietly acquiesce to a butt reaming by the media and their lackeys in the govt.
I am the problem?
You are freakin nuts.
The current crop of liars and double dealers who make up our professional politicians are the problem not Christian moms like me. My prayers do more for this country than any of these politicians with their lies, I can guarantee you that.
I can agree somewhat, but I think he’s worlds better than obama even if he cheats with a different woman daily and twice on sundays. sorta/sarc
If Newt applies for a job as my pastor, Ill vote against him.
I dont want a righteous Jimmy Carter. I want someone with some boldness who understands that were heading in the wrong direction. I will never trust Newt to be a conservative, but Romney would go to DC and work with people there to make government better.
Congratulations, It's only January and you have already got "Dumbest Post of the Year" all sewn up.
Yea,so unless he apologies the way you want, it didn’t happen - got it.
Then you must be an alterPaul bot.
As I said, if you have a link to an article where he actually apologized, please please post it
Most would say Moses, David, Solomon and Abraham had serious moral flaws but God used them anyway. Same can be said for Reagan, Churchill and Franklin. Perhaps you should let God decide who he uses rather than yourself? How’s that log in your eye doing?
Pray for America
Purpose of FR and why we can never support Mitt Romney
NOTICE: FR DOES NOT AND WILL NOT SUPPORT ABORTIONIST, GAY RIGHTS PUSHING BIG GOVERNMENT STATISTS
Long live the TEA party rebellion!! NO MORE RINOS!! NO ROMNEY, NO WAY!!
