What is it about this primary season that causes Republicans to go around the bend? The current beneficiary of the anyone but Romney mania is Newt Gingrich, who may actually win the South Carolina primary tomorrow. I find that astonishing. Gingrich has been mostly out of the public view since he retired from Congress 13 years ago. The most surprising feature of this endlessly surprising political year is that, at age 68, Gingrich has made a comeback.
It is hard to make clear-cut statements about the mercurial and often contradictory Gingrich, but one thing we can say with absolute certainty: he will never be President of the United States. Put aside the fact that he lasted only four years as Speaker of the House before resigning in disgrace, leaving Congress with an approval rating around 15%. Forget that he was the father of the earmark. Never mind his notorious lack of self-control and his attacks on free enterprise. Those are all worthy topics for another day, but for the moment lets just focus on the allegations by Newts second ex-wife that hit the press this week. Apart from all the other good reasons why Gingrich will never be President, Marianne Gingrichs sensational allegations snuffed out any possible hope that Newt can beat Barack Obama in 2012.

yeah Romney is awful too. Why can’t the opposing party come up with a real candidate? I’ll tell you why. It’s all a shell game. Just kabuki theater designed to make us think we have a choice.
I’m struggling to understand it as well. But I also struggled to comprehend the Palin devotion.
All I can figure out is conservatives are desperately hungry for someone who can both 1) articulate conservative values in a clear and unapologetic fashion and 2) take names and kick butt-hard.
Marianne Gingrich is not going away. She has a huge axe to grind and she’s going to just keep grinding it to the delight of the DBM. A constant sideshow of this type will overshadow Newt’s message. It will be just like Cain only we’d be stuck with Gingrich as a nominee with no way out.
Newt’s chastising the press is going to get old and start to sound petty. “Never pick a fight with anyone who buys ink by the barrel” is still relevant, IMO.
Obama will never agree to a debate format that would pit him one on one against Gingrich. This advantage will be effectively muted.
That's a very interesting way of looking at it. That certainly was the case with Bush I, Dole, Bush II, and McCain.
Never? Are you a prophet?
Only he hasn’t admitted his sins or begged forgiveness. Not from the public anyway we don’t know what happened at confession.
He needs to beg forgiveness of the the people he wants to have vote for him and he also needs to declare that he has learned how not to screw people to benefit his fat selfish self
Newt is the bottom of the barrel in choices. A fraction wanted no one but Palin and waiting on her; a lot of good candidates that were her political equal were brutally bashed on this forum.
With all that said.Romney is not a good wholesome Mormon man as you claim. He is the worst snake oil salesman of them all.His last debate performance was so scripted,so desperate as he stuttered out his memorized from idiot Rove; words.
The tea party is ticked off. There can be no more Obama or we won’t have an America.Gingrich or Santorum are the only hope. I think Perry,Bachmann would have been superb as POTUS.The irony is I would venture a guess that Palin was waiting on Perry to be VP and we could have had this nation back; but the same people on this forum that screamed in numerous threads over and over that Palin would NOT take a VP or cabinet position-ONLY POTUS are the same ones promoting Gingrich now as the last hope and suddenly are proclaiming joy Palin could be in The Gingrich cabinet.
There was a schism but the Palin games did not help at all.
Newt is the only one who has espoused and fought for conservative values while serving in office.
Newt is the only one who has made actual cuts to government (welfare reform) and balanced the budget.
Newt asked for forgiveness and has conducted himself in an honorable manner. A Christian believes in redemption --- what faith are you that you do not?
The vitriol spewed towards a Mormon like Romney who from all accounts has led a moral life...
Yet when he was governor, he supported and signed multiple pieces of legislation that directly conflicted with his Christian values......Gingrich never did that.
"How do you solve a problem like a Mittwit? You ZOT him!"
Each man is responsible for their own forgiveness. So why are you on the soul patrol?
I just don’t change my principles with the direction of the wind
I’m in the “anyone but Romney” camp, but - even so - I don’t think supporting Romney should be the kiss-of-ZOT.
Plenty of people who are reasonable laudable from a conservative standpoint have endorsed Romney. I’m not going to throw these babies completely out with the bathwater:
Nikki Haley
John Bolton
Thaddeus McCotter
Chris Christie
Rick Lazio
Elizabeth Dole
John Thune
Dennis Hastert
etc
Some of these people have their flaws, nut they are all enemies of Obama. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
So go ahead on your book-burning, thought control spree. I’m not a “big tent” guy, but I’m also not a “burn the witch” guy either.
Many people rally to Newt for the same reason they rallied to Sarah. They are both fighters.
2008 South Carolina Republican presidential debates, Mitt Romney, in response to Fred Thompson, said: I like [government] mandates. [Government] mandates work!
Good one!
Look, paint, I am trying to say that until Newtie reaches the people he wants to have vote for him, they will not vote for him.. Perhaps Newtie and God are best buds, that is what I hope. But he definitely hasn’t made clear to the electorate that he is a changed man, in fact he appears as a nasty fat little cheater who takes whatever he wants for himself at the expense of those he has pledged to love (spouse) or serve (voters). We don’t need such in White House.
If Newtie has indeed changed and is now a knight in shining armor, he needs to make that abundantly clear.
If Newt applies for a job as my pastor, I’ll vote against him.
I don’t want a righteous Jimmy Carter. I want someone with some boldness who understands that we’re heading in the wrong direction. I will never trust Newt to be a conservative, but Romney would go to DC and work with people there to make government better.
There is little danger that Newt will think Congress will ever love him...

Pay attention.
Gingrich has apologized, how many times do you want him to say it. Does he need to personally send you an email.
Gingrich is a repentant man. I beleive him.
Obviously Gingrich is not perfect and he has messed up big time, his life has changed.
If you want to support Romney just say so.
