Delusional...NewtBots like Jim Jones subjects on KoolAid...[and another one bytes the zot]

What is it about this primary season that causes Republicans to go around the bend? The current beneficiary of the “anyone but Romney” mania is Newt Gingrich, who may actually win the South Carolina primary tomorrow. I find that astonishing. Gingrich has been mostly out of the public view since he retired from Congress 13 years ago. The most surprising feature of this endlessly surprising political year is that, at age 68, Gingrich has made a comeback.

It is hard to make clear-cut statements about the mercurial and often contradictory Gingrich, but one thing we can say with absolute certainty: he will never be President of the United States. Put aside the fact that he lasted only four years as Speaker of the House before resigning in disgrace, leaving Congress with an approval rating around 15%. Forget that he was the father of the earmark. Never mind his notorious lack of self-control and his attacks on free enterprise. Those are all worthy topics for another day, but for the moment let’s just focus on the allegations by Newt’s second ex-wife that hit the press this week. Apart from all the other good reasons why Gingrich will never be President, Marianne Gingrich’s sensational allegations snuffed out any possible hope that Newt can beat Barack Obama in 2012.

The most significant words spoken in the last debate were in Newt’s closing statement, when he called Obama a “Saul Alinsky radical.” You could tell from the look of the other three candidates that they were all “WFT is a Saul Alinsky?”

That is why Newt must be the candidate; he gets it. Unlike the other three, who think our problem is merely that we have a democrat in the White House, Newt understands that there is a concerted effort by Cloward-Piven-type radicals, many of whom are deeply entrenched in our government, to systematically destroy from within our currency, economy, and society.

“OK, then, instead of your bitching and moaning, who’s your candidate and why is he better?”

Sigh - do people ever read a complete post around here? My original post already said, “I’m thinking Newt, but I don’t go to the polls enthusiastically.”

As a matter of fact, I *just* got back from the polls and I *did* pull the lever for Newt. But...

I drove away wanting to change my vote immediately. Not that I would, just that I have regret that he’s where I landed.

Look - here’s an email I sent to my best friend today after he asked who I was voting for and suggested I vote for Ron Paul (I have censored the profanity):

“Sorry, not Ron Paul.

Paul takes the isolation of Buchanan (which I sort of like) and couples it
with the naivete and appeasement of Neville Chamberlain. This is an
extremely dangerous combination.

Alone, Buchanan’s isolationism isn’t quite so dangerous - mainly because
he’s a hawk. “Hey, we’ll stick to internal matters, but if you f**k with our
self interests, we are going to come down on you like a ton of f**king
bricks... none of this ‘proportional response’ bulls**t.”

Given today’s world, you can’t afford to be like Neville Chamberlain. The
Eurozone is falling apart. China is ascendant. The Middle East is desperate
for a Caliphate. Russia wants to regain the glory of the old Soviet Union.
War *is* coming. Ron Paul would sit back like Chamberlain and watch it come,
potentially appeasing our enemies until it was too late. No way - I can’t
afford to vote for him, no matter how good he may be on domestic spending
issues. It would truly spell the end of the United States.

So where does that leave me?

Well, as you know, I’m firmly in the “not Romney” camp. He’s not 100%
awful - and he’s certainly no Obama - but I don’t see him as having the
stones to promote any real change. It’ll be four more years of the same s**t
that is driving this country into a ditch. We need something radical and we
need it now.

The final two choices are Santorum and Gingrich. I’ve been giving this a lot
of thought the past few days. In fact, it’s mostly what’s been on my mind.

I don’t mind Santorum. He’s not bad. He has flaws, but nothing that would
make me totally hold my nose while pulling the lever for him. He’s a bit
passive. He has compromised in the past. He has been a fan of earmarks.

Overall, he has an 84% lifetime ACU rating. Not bad. He aligns with my view
on the issues. He doesn’t have an overwhelmingly negative image.

Then there’s Newt. This guy’s likeability is in the s**tter:

http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/america-hates-newt-gingrich/326161

He’s prone to saying controversial s**t. He has issues - ethics violations
(which were kind of bulls**t when you look at them), marital problems, loss
of the Speakership, the check kiting scandal, he sat with Pelosi on the AGW
bulls**t, etc.

On the flip side, he has a 100% lifetime ACU rating. He really was mostly
responsible for balancing the budget. He really was mostly responsible for
welfare reform. He knows his s**t like no other candidate. And, he’s feisty
as hell. Did you see him rip John King a new a**hole for bringing up the
ex-wife question at the debate? It’s worth a watch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcYF5aNwUeI

Honestly, we need a fighter. I’m sick of the stupid Republicans who refuse
to hit back. Sick. Of. It.

Here’s the thing:

If the race was just Romney and Santorum, I would go to the polls and
*happily* pull the lever for Santorum. I’d be confident that I would be
making the right choice over Romney.

As it is, if I go to the polls and pull the lever for Santorum, I may be
contributing to a Romney win - which I *don’t* want. Newt has the momentum.
Will my one vote push Newt to victory over Romney? Probably not. But my
considerations are probably being echoed by other conservatives trying to
figure out what to do today. Vote for Santorum and possibly get Romney,
because it is unlikely that Santorum will win. Vote for Newt and get a
deeply troubled candidate who could be a glorious advocate of conservative
principles *if* he is able to win in November. IF.

I almost feel like I’m being played. Can Newt win? Or will this be the worst
candidate ever?

Sigh. Pull for Newt.”

Take heart, FRiend, Newt can never be as bad of a candidate as McStain or Dole.

As Lincoln said of Grant, "He fights". I'd rather have a candidate that fights, even if he loses, than one who tells America that there "...is nothing to fear from an Obama presidency".

As we say around here in the Upstate: "You done good."

I am just pointing out the utter hyprocrisy of the ‘moralists’ FReepers

No you're not. You're just looking to pat yourself on your head and say: "Look at me, I'm holy and righteous".

You not only want to quit the fight you want to talk others into doing it as well.

Newt has done plenty of conservative things, and he is running on a very conservative platform. If you want to concentrate on his flaws you may as well get an L tattooed on your forehead so people get fair warning as to where you are coming from when they try to discuss politics.

Someone who fights back would be nice for a change.

BUMP that!
After Bush sat there like a punching bag for eight years and McCain ran an "honorable" (milquetoast) campaign, I want somebody who is eager to play some smashmouth politics.
