Oh please, I have lived though more "interesting times" then you could shake a stick at which is why, given my preference, I don't go for the fire breathers and tend not to follow them.
To turn your argument on it's head you will be "Begging for some steady type to lead us back to sanity when the fire breather has roasted himself and Obama is in charge".

Uh...no. I don't see how choosing anything less than a fearless warrior chief to lead us against the most evil and insidious rot this nation has ever seen, will win the day.
I also reject your implied premise that Newt isn't "steady". He's a lot steadier than the flip-flopping Mitt, steadier than the mis-emotional Santo, and a whole lot steadier than Uncle Crazy. He's also a real statesman, which is a level that none of the others can hope to attain.
