"I've been talking quietly to the most powerful, I think, conservative movers-and-shakers in Washington over the past couple weeks, trying to get their read. Are we really going down this path? Every single one I've spoken to is trying to figure out a way to get to a brokered convention."
That was Joe Scarborough on Morning Joe today. For good measure, Scarborough also stated as a simple fact that Sarah Palin wants a brokered convention.

And they can pick ANYONE even someone who didnt run.
Yup
There. Fixed it.
I choose Newt and I advocate we rally around him to PREVENT a brokered convention....the only group that wins that one are the establishment RINOs and Romney.
I tend to agree, but not 100%. Remember, this is politics, and in politics, ‘anything’ can happen.
Here’s a thought: What if delegates channel their inner founding father, go rogue, and pick someone the party ain’t shoving down their throats? I know most delegates are probably party apparatchiks and loyalists, but excrement flows down hill, and being a tiny cog on a big wheel won’t save them from the impending disaster.
in my opinion the most likely outcome from that would be them just picking Romney.
BUT
I could see them picking someone like Jeb out of the blue too. It would be crazy.
In other words...
they want to pick Romney no matter what their party members say.
Even the worst of those folks could pick a better candidate. Even if they picked a moderate like Chris Christie he'd be more conservative and more electable by far than either Mitt or Newt.
I agree. It would be tantamount to suicide to pick an unvetted candidate. The MSM would have a field day making up all new lies and slander in the final months leading up to the election. Our candidate isn't likely to have the cash to effectively fight that and create his own image for the electorate.
No, as bad as the current crop is, we have a much better chance at ABO with the vetted group than the unvetted.
Among the current nominees, I like Newt. He may have a checkered past (not as checkered as Bill Clinton who is beloved for nearly all of the same reasons Newt is hated) but he is a fighter and generally right on the issues.
I have been calling for Rush to start a REPULICAN Operation Chaos for 2 months now! I do not want ANYBODY to drop out, was mad that Perry left.
With four candidates remaining, it will still work though. Ron Paul is good for 20%+ in most states that have an open primary, and 12-18% or so in those with caucus or closed primary. Santorum can pull a good 10-15% in the bible belt states, and Newt seems to have momentum and will get 30-35%. That leaves Romney, who probably is capped at no more than 40% max and probably more like 35%.
If we can keep all 4 going, nobody will come close to getting enough delegates to win the nomination and then we can hope the Republicans nominate somebody like Paul Ryan. The RATS under Obama have been spending millions on oppo research, mostly on Romney. If the convention is brokered, all that money is wasted, and the Rats have a very SHORT window to dig up dirt on the nominee.
Joe Scarborough is the last guy who would be on the inside track of what the conservative leaders are thinking. He’s a left wing tool.
Not a fantasy at all. Romney is capped at 35% support. Newt could never win a general election. Paul has a rabid 20% support, and Santorum has the bible thumpers behind him. All the elements for a brokered convention are falling into place as long as Santorum and Paul stick around.
If there is a brokered Republican convention in 2012, I will eat my hat.
“Your thoughts?”
I think they are beginning to get nervous about Romney being able to carry the primary. They just want to go ahead and appoint him. A brokered convention will serve conservatives as well as the Republican House under Boehner.
More games of the nomenklatura.
“Lots of danger there. GOP E more than likely will get their way. They will cheat to get what they want.”
Precisely.
“its when no body gets a majority of the delegates outright, and the insiders go into a room basically and pick who will be the nominee. And they can pick ANYONE even someone who didnt run.”
I wonder if you could elaborate? it becomes “brokered” after how many votes of the delegates? after some candidates release their delegates and new votes are taken? how many new votes? by “insiders” you mean the members of the RNC? which members of the RNC? all 168? the 168 plus certain others? are these votes recorded?
Seems like nobody wants to get specific on these questions, and these questions do have specific answers, and the rules are written, and there is a rules committee, and a political party is governed by rules that are much like laws. I would like to delve deeper, but there are people who already know answers to these question, but I don’t think they want everybody else to know the answers to these questions
