Newt Gingrich: Unscathed by Marianne’s Cheating Charges in South Carolina?
thedailybeast.com ^ | 1/19/2012 | Andrew Romano

The second Mrs. Gingrich is creating a media firestorm on the eve of the South Carolina primary. But voters there seem inclined to take it out on the press.

So you think the latest revelations about Newt Gingrich’s sloppy personal life—you know, the whole tawdry to-do about him asking his second wife Marianne for an “open marriage” so he could sleep with his then-mistress Callista at the same time he was delivering speeches around the country on family values—will sink the former House Speaker in the deeply Christian, devoutly conservative state of South Carolina?

Think again.

If most of Gingrich’s Palmetto State supporters are like Joseph and Kathy Wilson—and the vast majority of those I spoke to Thursday were—then Newt is in luck.

I met the Wilsons on the waterfront in handsome Beaufort, S.C. (Beaufort is where they filmed The Big Chill and The Prince of Tides. It’s all wraparound porches, Spanish moss, and Pat Conroy vistas. You get the picture.) Joseph, 67, was wearing a camouflage cap, aviators, and a brown, yellow, and red flannel shirt; Kathy, 64, was in a white puffy coat and a long red scarf.

We were all waiting for Gingrich to arrive, so I figured I’d strike up a conversation. The first reports about Marianne’s ABC interview had just surfaced on Twitter a few minutes earlier, as I was pulling into town from Charleston; I assumed I’d be the one to break the news to them, and I was curious to see how they would react.

“So, have you heard about this thing with Newt’s second wife?” I asked.

Exactly, the left has never cared about ethics or morals, just look at their leaders back to FDR cheating-but he’s touted as one of the heroes of the leftist faith.

They know we do have ethics and morals, but all that means to them is something to use against us, we get no credit for having them but we do get clobbered by trying to be consistent (on the behalf of other people, yet) as regards our morals. They couldn’t care less about anybody’s morals and ethics, except inasmuch as they can use them as a weapon against us. We”ve just got to stop giving them the advantage by letting them set the rules. They never allowed us to use FDR’s cheating, or JFK’s, that was all swept under as long as both sides acted with discretion-a lost art in these days of smear jobs.

I think most people will know that the nation is in danger and if there’s one man on the horizon who can fight down and dirty with Hussein and not be intimidated, that’s the man we need at this point in time, and with evrything this nation is facing, Newt’s personal baggagge iis not at this time the priority, esppecially by a bunch who wouldn’t know morals if they saw the Risen Christ in their face spaking ito them personally.

I doubt Newt ever used the phrase “Open Marriage” which is pretty incendiary. This is Marianne’s phrase not Newt’s.

Marianne claims he wanted to have a girlfriend (Callista) while married to her. Married men have girlfriends with their wife’s understanding or approval. This is not so rare. The wife gets paid off in some way with a house or jewelry or what have you. Marianne rejected this idea so they got divorced...end of story

I doubt anyone here wants to marry Newt ... and Marianne sounds like a real piece of work. Isn’t the FBI looking into her dealings? This might get interesting.

Real people are getting a bellyfull of the Media trying to destroy Republicans while hiding Obama.

Its as plain as the nose on your face that the Media is backing Obama and destroying anyone who threatens him.

Newt threatens him Romney doesn’t. Where is the Media and why are they not investigating Obama’s past?

When I heard this ex-wife "open marriage," "they listen to what I say, they don't care what I do" thing, although it’s old news, I think it’s hurtful news. I think Newt's our best shot but I think he may be in deep do-do.

I was beginning to fret about loss of the Evangelical vote, but then I weighed in their love for a good redemption story and it all seems to balance out. As long as Newt angles his comments accordingly, he'll be okay.

Sounds like Newt was modeling himself after a French politician...they do this all the time.

My, my. The left used to be the ones who would trash the woman when she spoke out about how she was wronged. Now it looks to be the right who's guilty of the same thing.

The left wing media live in glass houses.

In fly over country, we can see when they are lying to us.

(That’s pretty much always)

Well the left wing media does this to Republicans because the GOP used to represent themselves as having some degree of morality while the Democrats did not. Unfortunately that is no longer true but no one has informed the left wing media yet. After this with Noot perhaps they will catch on.

"Cheating"? You've got to be kidding me. That's not what Marianne's accusations are about. She is talking about Newt's stability and suitability in a much broader way.

And she relates it directly to his political skills, as in this part of the 2010 Esquire interview where she says:

Marianne hints in the Esquire profile that Clinton may have been much better informed about her husband’s extracurricular activities than she was — and that he may have used that information to his advantage one night in 1998.

One night, Marianne says, Bill Clinton called from the White House. She answered the phone and the president asked if he could please speak to her husband. Could the Speaker come over immediately? After he hung up, Newt summoned his driver and went in the back door to the Oval Office. During that meeting, he would tell her later, Clinton laid it out for him: “You’re a lot like me,” he told him.

Whatever else happened at that meeting, Newt Gingrich was muzzled in the critical run-up to the ‘98 midterms. Three weeks before the election, Gingrich got a visit from Kenneth Duberstein, a senior Republican who had served as chief of staff to Ronald Reagan. “He says, ‘What’s going on? We’re gonna lose seats if something doesn’t change.’ ” Marianne jumped in, too. “I asked Newt, ‘What are you doing? Why aren’t we out there blasting them?’

This was his true turning point, she believes. As his personal failures and his political contradictions closed in on him, she began to entertain fears about his fundamental decency.

I hope so too. For it’s high time we took a stand. Not so much for Newt’s sake but more importantly to send a signal that we’re not to continue to let ourselves be manipulated by the media. In the end, this isn’t really about Newt, it’s about the left using and abusing the power of the media in order to undermine a legitimate part of the political process. If we unravel every time they pull one of these stunts, then it will never end. But if there is a backlash, it will make them think twice before they do something like this again.

The results of this interview could range anywhere from no effect to Gingrich withdrawing. No one knows.

But, the main points about these latest revelations are any Republican running against Obama should expect this, and there will be (likely) many more revelations about his past exposed.

What the question comes down to is can we support Gingrich while ignoring these episodes in his past? I guess time will tell.

As for the other remaining candidate representing Conservatives, I don't think there is as much to expose which leads me to believe he still would make a tougher opponent for Obama.

Regardless, I still favor both remaining in the race at least until we can tell what the ramifications are of the Gingrich ex telling her story.

Let's make sure our nominee is thoroughly vetted....soon.

Lets see the second wife is complaining that Newt wanted to screw around with her too. If it comes down to Obama vs Shoe I vote for the shoe, but mistaking Newt for a Conservative when he praises Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and has a track record that can only be compared to Clinton, is the biggest problem in America today. Only thing missing is the blue dress. His own members kicked his butt outta Congress, now he is the second coming. Mitt progressive, Newt Progressive...I thought this was a Conservative web site? No I am not a Paulbot...

This HAS been told before and it’s been discussed here on FR months ago. Many, including myself, predicted this would come up.

Marianne’s 2010 interview was about a lot more than cheating and a “sloppy personal life.” It painted a picture of a man who was maybe “not right” in the head. It also indicated that the Clintons know an awful lot about Newt that they haven’t let rip in public yet.

Their info, also, will come out, one way or the other, at a predictable time.

I’m not crazy about Newt, barely even like him as a person. He comes off as a peevish windbag when he’s at his worst.

But at his best, Newt is a first rate debater, and will wax BO’s skinny fanny. That will be a hoot, as will Newt’s anti-media zingers.

If Newt is “the one” I will vote for him of course, and along the way enjoy watching liberals’ heads explode with hatred. They can’t possibly attack his philandering because they’ve already discounted fidelity as a character attribute of importance.
