Santorum and Gingrich Scramble for the Conservative Vote

WASHINGTON — Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich both pleaded with conservatives on Sunday to unite behind their candidacies in a last-ditch effort to stop Mitt Romney’s march to the Republican presidential nomination.

Mr. Santorum said the Republican contest needed to quickly narrow to a two-person race between Mr. Romney and someone else, but he declined to explicitly call on the other candidates to drop out.

“I’m not going to tell anybody to get in or out of a race; I think that’s their decision to make,” Mr. Santorum said on Fox News Sunday. But he added, “We need to get this eventually down to a conservative alternative to Mitt Romney.”

Mr. Santorum said the vote of support for his candidacy by Christian conservative leaders on Saturday in Texas should persuade Republicans in South Carolina that he deserves to be that alternative.

And he is better than Gingrichs?Gingrich called Paul Ryans plan right wing and now Gingrich endorses it.What is the alternative Gingrich has dropped in the polls? Who else is there? Or is it that no one is done eating they’re own until we have Romney/Obama?

It is sad that the Republicans can only produce Romney as their candidate. As has been said repeatedly he is nothing but “Obama lite!” For some reason conservatives cannot resonate with voters. I think a large part of such failure is the massive demographic shift brought about by flooding the country with “Third Worlders.” The liberals have won again and have insured themselves perpetual power.

I believe it is going to be “Santorum Saturday” here in South Carolina.

If Santorum has a close win or comes in second to Mendacity Mitt I do hope the others will do their patriotic duty to defend the United States by stepping aside and endorsing Santorum.

Course Paul the nut don't count cuz he is innit for his freakish ego.

He’s a social conservative only. He’s also leaden, a terrible speaker, and has absolutely no chance of getting the nomination - but he’ll make sure that Romney gets it.

Plus if you’ve ever heard his scary ideas on Social Security you’ll really run screaming. He seems to want to handle it by taking benefits away from the already retired, making it means tested so it essentially becomes a welfare program and people who have paid into SS all of their lives can’t collect because they have just too much money to “need” it, etc.

Santorum is no conservative. Just examine his voting record.

There are two sides to that argument:

Gingrich is no conservative. Just examine his advocacy record.

See? It's easy. Newt has flipped back and forth from Global Warming to a healthcare mandate. So, at that point it comes down to which one you can trust. Newt violated his most solemn oaths, repeatedly. He may be intelligent and articulate, but from what I can see he uses that ability to rationalize anything.

It will be down to one anti-Romney after FL, but I don’t think Rick will care for the results.

Newt has not dropped in the polls lol. He has been gaining in the legit ones to date.

What's this I see? Oh, right. Gingrich @ 25% and Santorum @ 7%.

The "right-wing social engineering" comment has been the worst contextomy of this entire campaign—see here. Can't believe people are so idiotic as to assail Newt over this.

I agree.I recall reading a thread of Gingrich fans saying they will unite around whoever wins in SC (discounting Romney and Paul) but now that it may be Santorum (in which BTW Obama cannot win without PA) the final schism to give us Romney Obama looks like (from the comments so far) to have begun. I said I would support either Santorum of Gingrich I am open.If more eating they’re own takes place and Gingrich and Santorum split the vote-it will be so sad.

Our country doesn’t need an alter boy.

We need a real leader that will turn this country around intelligently and quickly.

I will continue to support the one man that I believe in my heart and head can turn this country around and set the course for my children and grandchildren to have a better future........ that man is Newt Gingrich.

GO NEWT GO.........

Mitt Romney leads the South Carolina Republican presidential primary with 29%. Newt Gingrich is in second place with 25% and Ron Paul is in third place with 20%.

Paul has gained the most and Rick Santorum has lost the most since the last American Research Group survey on January 4-5. In that survey, Paul was at 9% and Santorum was at 24%.

Gingrich and Romney are tied among self-identified Republicans with 29% each, followed by Paul with 18%. Paul leads among independents and Democrats with 29%, followed by Romney with 27%, Gingrich with 12%, and Rick Perry with 11%.

Gingrich leads among those likely primary voters saying they are supporters of the Tea Party with 28%, followed by Romney with 24%, Paul with 20%, and Santorum with 11%. Romney leads with 33% among those saying they are not supporters of the Tea Party or are undecided about the Tea Party, followed by Gingrich with 23%, and Paul with 21%.

Gingrich leads among evangelical Christians with 40%, followed by Perry with 15%, Romney with 13%, Santorum with 12%, and Paul with 10%. Among likely voters saying they are not evangelical Christians, Romney leads with 48% and followed by Paul with 33%.

Gingrich leads among men with 29%, followed by Paul with 23%, Romney at 18%, and Santorum with 14%. Among women, Romney leads with 38%, followed Gingrich with 22%, and Paul with 18%.

... from the survey of 600 likely Republican primary voters conducted January 11-12, 2012...

Agree, the only true conservative in this race is Gov. Rick Perry.

Are you really that dense?

We have the following candidates:

Romney (barf)
Paul (nut)
Newt
Perry
Huntsman
Santorum

Soooo... if Newt and Santorum are out, you still have two that aren’t Romney or Paul.

Now, wasn’t that easy?
