An international team of scientists says it's figured out how to slow global warming in the short run and prevent millions of deaths from dirty air: Stop focusing so much on carbon dioxide.
They say the key is to reduce emissions of two powerful and fast-acting causes of global warming methane and soot.
Carbon dioxide is the chief greenhouse gas and the one world leaders have spent the most time talking about controlling. Scientists say carbon dioxide from fossil fuels like coal and oil is a bigger overall cause of global warming, but reducing methane and soot offers quicker fixes.
Soot also is a big health problem, so dramatically cutting it with existing technology would save between 700,000 and 4.7 million lives each year, according to the team's research published online Thursday in the journal Science. Since soot causes rainfall patterns to shift, reducing it would cut down on droughts in southern Europe and parts of Africa and ease monsoon problems in Asia, the study says.
....
It all comes down to basic chemistry. There's far more carbon dioxide pollution than methane and soot pollution, but the last two are way more potent. Carbon dioxide also lasts in the atmosphere longer.

Some years ago a few rangers at Yellowstone were asked what were the most common questions they received from tourists. They said number one was "when do you let the animals out?" and number two "when do you turn on the geysers?"
YEP!
Maybe soot from volcanoes would do the trick. Or, maybe NOT!
Next the latest scientific study will show that pot smoke slows global warming. However, they need more time and money to complete the study.
Of course not. It's just that the C02=bad mantra was getting old and it's really hard to get taxpayer funded research grants with an old mantra. So, presto, new mantra: c02=forgotten, methane & soot=new menace. New mantra=more billions from the taxpayers in research grants.
For millions of years, “climate change” had always been a naturally occurring thing. Then, a group of humanoids figured out that there was a lot of money to be made from the dumb humanoids who never to the time to learn how nature works. Once this happened, the “scientists” turned into some of the world’s finest con men.
“So does this mean that the learned elites were wrong about CO2 all along?”
Bingo! Don’t know about elites, but journalists like Borenstein, who have sucked-up to and parroted the Global Warming party line for years, are perhaps trying to find a way to walk backwards on the subject without admitting their stupidity.
And munchies.
Wouldn’t soot in the atmosphere block the sunlight and cause the earth to cool?
BS.
Water vapor “is the chief greenhouse gas” in the atmosphere and is far more prevalent than all other so called “greenhouse gasses”.
Just lies on top of more lies.
I guess they don’t know anything about the newly discovered climatic phenomenon with potentially catastrophic results called...wait for it...wait for it...
GLOBAL DIMMING!

Now we’re all gonna die fer sure, dude!
They found that less soot in the air causes the atmosphere to warm by 1 degree C in three days!
Why is it after Mt. Pinatubo erupted back in 1991 all that volcanic soot caused the Earth to cool a few degrees?
I thought water vapor was five times more "effective" as a greenhouse agent. Can't they keep the talking points consistent?

Well, they definately have a handle on it. They’re down to a 4 millon/yr death spread.
Save “millions of lives”; or reduce world population by billions?
These are pretty much the same people who are for U.N. Agenda-21, to cut WORLD population to a “sustainable” 500,000,000.
Liberals are schizophrenics...and that IS a mental disorder.
Thanks ApplegateRanch.
Not much soot in volcanoes. The industrial soot that warms is lower in the atmosphere and coats snow and ice. Volcanoes that cool blow their SO2 into the stratosphere where it blocks sunlight to some extent for a couple of years.
LOL!
Have to yank a post I think - I didn't notice it was a getty image ... preserving the bump!
