Why is it after Mt. Pinatubo erupted back in 1991 all that volcanic soot caused the Earth to cool a few degrees?

Why is it after Mt. Pinatubo erupted back in 1991 all that volcanic soot caused the Earth to cool a few degrees? Not much soot in volcanoes. The industrial soot that warms is lower in the atmosphere and coats snow and ice. Volcanoes that cool blow their SO2 into the stratosphere where it blocks sunlight to some extent for a couple of years.
