Top conservative talker Rush Limbaugh says Newt Gingrich may have made a "good move" by raising Mitt Romney's Bain dealings -- even if the criticisms had some mistakes. Limbaugh, on his show Friday, also noted that Gingrich's Bain attacks came after Romney allies spent millions of dollars in negative ads attacking Gingrich, which Gingrich has said included falsehoods or distortions of his record. Rush read Gingrich's statement asking his supporters that run Winning Our Future Super Pac to fix their video about Bain or pull it. Rush said: "Newt Gingrich released the following statement calling for truth and accuracy from campaigns and so-called 'Super-PACs' supporting candidates. 'The American people have a right to know the facts about the records of the men and women who are asking them for their vote. Governor Romney is running as someone who knows how to create jobs. In fact, he has claimed to have created 100,000 jobs while at Bain Capital. However, numerous analyses have said that figure is as inaccurate as President Obama's claim to have "saved or created" millions of jobs. Furthermore, Governor Romney's experience as a portfolio manager did not help him create an environment in Massachusetts that was friendly to job creation.'" Rush continued: "It goes on, but basically what Newt is saying here, what he announced today, "I am calling for the Winning Our Future Super-PAC supporting me to either edit its 'King of Bain' advertisement and movie to remove its inaccuracies, or to pull it off the air and off the internet entirely," and I am urging Romney to do the same. Yep. He did a hell of a lot more damage to Newt than he did to Romney. And Newt screwed up, but Rush screwed up tenfold.
I was disgusted with him all the more because I've been listening to Rush long enough to know that the man is incapable of admitting he was wrong.
It wasn't until Wednesday that I was able to identify who it was he reminded me of: Alec Guinness's Col. Nicholson in "Bridge on the River Kwai." Building the enemy a "proper bridge" to demonstrate the superiority of British discipline and skill. Rush building Romney "a proper bridge" to demonstrate the superiority of "true" faith to capitalism.
My gosh ... can you even imagine what a sight that must have been! I've often thought about what that would be like, and think that if I ever witnessed it, my heart would have nearly burst with pride and gratitude, and I know I would have wept as they went over.
That jet was the Messerschmitt 262, and was the first operational jet fighter ever (though some argue mistakenly that the distinction belongs to the Brits' Gloster Meteor ... the Meteor took flight first, I believe, but the Me262 was in active combat against the Allies while the Meteor was only flying observation patrols, from what I'm told). A wonderful proof that the human element trumps superior technology was when Lt. Urban Drew, in his prop-driven P-51 Mustang "Detroit Miss," was credited for shooting down two Me262s, though he also destroyed a third, shooting it before it ever got off the ground.

Castrus, I think I speak for a lot of FReepers when I say WE GET that Rush didn't intend to shill for Romney and we understand why he was upset with Newt. We also understand that Job #1 right now is to TAKE OUT ROMNEY. Period.
What Rush DIDN'T GET was that his attacks on Newt ABSOLUTELY benefitted Romney, whether he intended them to or not and no matter how much he tried to balance things by equally criticizing Romney.
Rush almost not only DIDN'T GET, but he eagerly and even willfully miscontstrued, what Newt was saying, and IMO, his stubborn pride, which is his Achilles Heel, prohibits him from owning up to it (and Pelham nailed it in his post where he says capitalism is Rush's substitute for religion). It is crystal clear: Newt wasn't criticizing capitalism, he was criticizing Romney's way of practicing it.
Romney is a proven statist through and through, and statism is the enemy. As far as I'm concerned, if Newt goes a bit populist to take down OUR ENEMY (and remember it was REAGAN HIMSELF who said in 1979 that he wanted his campaign to "stand for Main Street, not Wall Street. I want us to stand for the worker, the shopkeeper, the entrepreneur, and the small businessman") then I say GODSPEED NEWT GINGRICH.
Rush should have joined me. He missed the bus.

I too was stunned not only by Rush’s tin-ear criticism of Gingrich and his plumping for Romney, but by the fact that a lot of Freepers took up the cry. It was bizarre, since nothing but a serious misunderstanding of Gingrich’s ad could make anybody think it was a criticism of capitalism. Possibly a wilfull misunderstanding (I do think Rush favors Romney), but a misunderstanding nonetheless.
It’s possible, as Finny said, that once Rush had come out with that crazy claim, he refused to back down simply out of arrogance and embarrassment. He loves to call himself the “all-seeing, all-knowing,” although I have often noticed lately that his information is not current and I feel that he’s just talking off the top of his head, especially in his rants. So maybe the Bain thing is just more evidence that he’s slipping, and the blind adherence of some Freepers to Rush’s words reflects the day when Rush was more aware and possibly more conservative.
He’s certainly ceased to be a conservative leader in my mind, although I hope now he does what he can to repair the damage.
Here’s my view how things will look after Romney is our nominee:
BECK: “As long as Romney doesn’t mess with my gold or hoarded food, I’m happy...I’m happy...I’m happy...I’m hap...(PAT GREY:...”Glenn, GLENN, STOP you’re doing that repeating thing again”
RUSH: “ I knew all that stuff about Romney but Gingrich , Perry and Santorum hates capitalism, and don’t rag on me just because Bain helps pay my salary”

If you ever read or understood Ayn Rand, you would know that your sentence is internally contradictory. BTW, I do share her veneration for laissez-faire capitalism, individuality and non-conventional wisdom. I do not share her views on religion. Nonetheless, she is the guiding beacon for modern conservatism.
I don't think Rush has been on the top of his game for at least a couple of years now.
Maybe too many have woken up to this fact, so Clear Channel gave Rush the signal to back off and return to feigning independent conservatism.
Bain Capital might suffer financially if it remains a target in this campaign. As a rule, media ownership is obtained in order to control the message. Making profits selling the message only secondary. Even that can be faked by subsidizing one's media holdings with advertising business from one's other holdings.
I agree...the attack was because of the principle involved, not the candidate...in fact there is a good argument that there are no conservatives left in the campaign from which to choose, although some of them have some conservative characteristics. It happened that the attack on capitalism benefited Romney, but not because it was Romney, but only because that was where the criticism of capitalism arose.
It could as easily gone the other direction, had Romney made that attack on Newt.
I agree with Rush, someone must defend First Principles, as there are no candidates doing so now except with lip services.

True. It's one of his real faults. I had the same thought as you, after hearing Rush's rant. I knew that he'd realize his monstrous error, but that it was too late, because he'd never admit it. Sorta like a DC politician, eh?
I know you've probably already made comment elsewhere about Rush's incredible blunder, but can you share your thoughts about that incident?

Since you’re enjoying these anecdotes- when dad was working for Bechtel some years ago he discovered that one of his coworkers had been in the same little French town on the same day that he was- it was up near Biche- anyway dad’s unit was coming into the south end of town while his friend was in a farmhouse on the north, engaged with some German infantry- until the Germans rolled up some tanks and pointed the guns at the farmhouse. They didn’t fire on it because they wanted the house as a command post, but they did take dad’s friend prisoner.
I remember back in '08 when he played clips of Romney and told his audience, "Folks, this is not conservatism." I've heard him criticize Romney often. We ALL know that Romney's politics are the antithesis of conservatism, and Rush claims that Rush is the ultimate conservative. Yet if he WAS, he'd be like Thomas Sowell and state plainly that between Romney and Gingrich, OBVIOUSLY Gingrich is the best choice.
Therefore, Rush's inability to reject a clearly statist, anti-conservative Romney, although he does criticize him, must be outside the realm of politics. IT MUST HAVE TO DO WITH SOMETHING PERSONAL. My own theory is that Rush has a hard-core inferiority complex when it comes to Big Finance Wealth figures like Romney and as evidenced in Rush's own behavior talking about being around the Rockefellers (somebody referenced it upthread).
That's my theory, anyway. Your mileage may vary.
