Religious leaders rally behind Rick Santorum
Los Angeles Times ^ | January 14, 2011 | Kim Geiger

In an effort to avoid a repeat of 2008, when social conservatives failed to rally behind a single Republican presidential candidate, a group of more than 100 religious leaders who gathered in Texas this week reached a consensus to support former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, said the decision was reached after three rounds of balloting, with Santorum winning 85 votes in the final round, to Newt Gingrich’s 29. Texas Gov. Rick Perry had strong support at the beginning of the process, but was eliminated after the first round of balloting, Perkins said.

“The focus here was on people putting aside their preferences, putting aside the candidate they had signed up with, trying to reach a consensus,” Perkins said.

“Rick Santorum has consistently articulated the issues that are of concern to conservatives, both the economic and the social, and has woven those into a very solid platform,” Perkins said. “And he has a record of stability…He’s reliable.”

Three major issues guided the group: Repeal of the healthcare law that was passed in 2010, the national debt and government spending, and social conservative values.

“There were passionate speeches made on behalf of the various candidates, but there was this underlying desire to come to a consensus,” Perkins told reporters on a conference call after the event.

A day late and dollar short.

I think you've captured it nicely.

I can’t remember the evangelical leader or his exact quote a few weeks ago - but it was basically: Evangelicals aren’t too bright when it comes to politics. This just furthers that point.

Yes. We don’t want Romney they say. So, let’s all get behind somebody (Santorum) that doesn’t have a prayer of beating Romney. In the process we’ll keep the Not Romney’s fractured and make sure Romney wins it. Brilliant!

Can we just get a president that isn’t part of the Harvard Cabal - which includes the Saudis, by the way.

If I just wanted to vote for the perceieved winner I would vote for Romneycrat. Otherwise, I could live with NGingrich,RSantorum,or even RPerry. No way I am voting for Romneycrat or Paulertarian.

You guys are spot on.

One problem we need to deal with next election is Iowa. We have got to preemptively nip the religious leaders there in the bud before they propel another one-percenter with no money or organization into a bona fide vote splitter.

I have had enough Santuckabees for one lifetime.

My spiritual leader is in heaven. He has not given any direction regarding Santorum.

“And yet we had FReepers getting spastic over Perry signing an instate tuition bill in TX when the bill went through the legislature by a vote of 170-4”

I 100% support NOT punishing high achieving children for the sins of their illegal parents. Yeah, I know it’s a magnet — but we haven’t secured the border, so what do you expect! If I were Mexican and the border was WIDE OPEN, I’d surely dream of coming to a country that Ray Charles sings about here >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7Wt4XlXUrc

So while I agree with the Texas gov on the above, some of the PROBLEMS with Perry are him stupidly endorsing Rudy the NY Liberal and Abortioner for president, disrespecting Iowa by stepping on their Ames event to screw Michele, and a TOTAL laziness on Rick’s part to a very minimum standard of debate prep.

....I have had enough Santuckabees for one lifetime.

Looks like Huckabee is exacting his revenge. Note. Perry was strong in the beginning then moved aside. Sounds like dealing to me. Bauer (already announced earlier in the week for Santorum) and Huckabee (there in "spirit") pushing for Santorum. Gingrich was pulling high numbers so to fulfill their "underlying desire to come to a consensus," they settled for Santorum. That's all that mattered -- consensus to take to the flocks on Sunday before next Saturday's vote.

Huck is a one-percenter?

IA + SC = 64% combined total for Huck

Santorum will be garnering about HALF that.

How sad .. the candidate with the least scandals, or bad judgments, is pushed aside because he is not more of a dynamic personality; and is essentially faulted for being not strong enough. Goodness is strong. None of us are without some indiscretions in some situations in our life. He has experience, he is married to his first wife, he is against abortion, he has common sense. He is conservative ... hopefully all the candidates see we must cut the size of government, less employees, fewer agencies, eliminating the waste and many unnecessary departments, and MOST OF ALL STOP SPENDING, CUTTTING EXISTING EXPENSES BY AT LEAST 30%.

necessity IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION. we HAVE LOST OUR MOORINGS. America MUST GRAB HOLD OF FIRM GROUND AND HOLD ON NO MATTER WHAT. There will be a hue and cry when the reductions are enacted. Sorry necessary. Must do. If not it will be a huge Chaos and Crash! It is closer than we realize. We are acting as if we are blind. Is Rick the perfect candidate and the answer to our needs? No! but he is the best presenting himself ... Rick Perry might be next. MO.

PLEASE cut the crap. Rick Perry is the ONLY ONE OF THE CANDIDATES THAT WILL seal the border in a year (none of the others have any intention of addressing this). And NO amnesty. And Perry will kill off the cartels. He is the only one who understands this.

The main reason that bill was passed was to lower the tax burden on Texas tax payers.

State Comptroller Susan Combs says it is working.

We want productive resident/citizens vice burdens on the state.

Of course I could point out that Jimmy Carter probably was the most “Scandal Free” President in recent memory......doesn’t change the fact that he also sucked as a President.

Nice try.

Huck has said dozens of times on his Fox News shows and his 600+ ABC radio stations that he is endorsing no one until the Tampa convention.

Period.

Rick Perry’s my governor, too and I’d LOVE to have him as my President also, but I’m having to come to terms with the fact that it’s not going to happen. When I look at what’s left to choose from, Rick Santorum is the only other candidate I can fully support. I’ll vote for whoever is on the republican ticket, but if it’s not Perry or Santorum, my vote will be a vote against Obama rather than for whoever the republicans nominate.

An incompetent double-digit loser who pledges allegiance to a foreign monarch in place of our Constitution.

Ron Paul seems to be the only one left who is serious to the founder's principles. Rick Fecal Matter and Lube should take his unAmerican beliefs to K of C meetings, not the White House.
