Furthermore, making a profit is only one component of owning a business. Whatever happened to the idea that you are responsible for your workers and to the larger community? Too often, people feel like just pawns in a game of ever increasing largesse for the top dogs. The big shots are always the winners often getting payouts in the millions when their companies fail and the losers are left to figure out how to eat or buy clothes for their children. (A new study found that $100 million golden parachutes have become commonplace for failed CEOs).
Romneys class envy claim is predicated on a lie we often here from the uber-rich and their defenders: the highest goal and achievement for Americans is to be wealthy, when all most people want is to be able to provide a decent lives for their families
The unlikely hero in this tale has been Newt Gingrich, who has been making the most coherent argument for ethical capitalism. Says Gingrich, what we want is, a free enterprise system that is honest. . . fair to everyone and gives everyone an equal opportunity to pursue happiness. Criticizing Romneys brand of free enterprise, (Newt)said, Its not fine if the person who is rich manipulates the system, gets away with all the cash and leaves behind the human beings.
Be still my heart.

Gingrich is a patriot...he ain't a Commie.
Nothing ethical about his ads or the movie he bought
Second, I’m not sure at all why quoting a NYC liberal commentator’s opinion is particularly helpful to his cause.

In this case, I quote her because she is right- or do you prefer existing Republican bailouts for the rich, Bush record spending on the nanny state, or the Fed giving free money to the multi-trillion dollar multinationals so they can give fraudulenmt bonuses to their executives at the expense of the working people of the nation?
I have 2 enemies- socialists on the left and Republican socialists -— and sometimes a “liberal” commentator stumbles into the truth. Next objection?
“Ethical Capitalism?”
Sounds like one of those made up pc lib words.
Rush is supporting Bain because Rush has dinner with such people. He needs to go back and read James Burnhams book, the Managerial Revolution. Mitt is not a captain of industry, like Carnegie or Ford, or even like his father. He is a manager of a portfolio who makes money by milking industry.
No, capitalism isn't unethical but many unethical people use and abuse capitalism. No matter what one does in their life, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it.
It is capitalism unlike that of the Krupps in Germany, who didnt care if the government was left or right.
Oh, she would hate to see Newt on the ballot after he made Clinton moved to the right. Can’t forgive that happening. She is a huge leftwinger and political player.
Communism is a form of Capitalism, the State is the Capitalist.
The notion that we shouldnt allow any company to fail is a socialist one.
*************
Exactly!!!! You’re exactly right. So, why did 75% of us who objected to the bailout of banks get the collective obscene gesture from the plutocrats Republicans who gave money to their rich friends?
You have affirmatively identified the problem, my friend. But, like Rush, it appears that you see it one way- that only liberals are socialists. If 2008 taught us anything, it’s that Republicans expect us to subsidize the losses of the rich at the expense of the taxpayer.
McCain, Bush, Romney don’t give a damn if you can live under capitalism or communism— they just want to maintain their wealth and their fiefdoms.
And when a “liberal” identify states that reality-— well, it’s still reality.
Capitalism is a very free system that depends to a great extent on the decisions of the free individuals within it. Any system benefits the powerful and unscrupulous because they are most willing to exploit it, and this is the reason it is necessary to have some laws controlling an economy.
However, capitalism can be controlled through agreements based on certain ethical principles (honesty, good faith, etc.), because the basis of capitalism is the contract, which is a voluntary agreement between truthful individuals. This means that capital will not be taken from one and redistributed to another (that is, the government or the powerful person) but that it will be something from which both parties expect to gain some advantage.
When the parties to a contract are dishonest or are relying on things outside of the contract that give them an unfair advantage (government bailouts, for example), the entire system is undermined.
So yes, ethics are important.
Bingo.....that’s why I vehemently opposed the original Chrysler bailout in 1977, it set the precedent that government would bail out companies that made bad decisions....the fact Chrysler paid it back is immaterial. If Chrysler went out of business, somebody else would have bought the assets and made good use of them. Now the expectation was set that government would step in and save companies that were “too big to fail.”
Yes!!! He’s the only person willing to have a serious conversation about this.
And while Romney does the Romney hair show and the press faints with joy, Obama is consolidating his power and destroying the whole basis of capitalism (commercial activity).
Back in, back in, back in, the USSR,
************
Whodat- you are pretty smart— so you should understand, you ARE already in the USSR. When 75% of the people say they don’t want the banks bailed out- yet the poliboro says screw you, we’ll bailout whomever we want-— how’s that type of democracy feel to you? -:)
Tell me, should a floundering company that is bought out by a shell corporation be able to borrow money to pay dividends to it's sole shareholder before running the company into the ground and then going bankrupt?
Is that the kind of Capitalism that you support?
Thank you. And I am glad this issue have to the fore at last, because until now we have ceded it to the Left, responding with kneejerks to often perfectly legitimate complaints and criticisms. No, not everything is hunky dory in the world of rampant capitalism, which is not to argue for government control or socialism.
Perhaps one needs to experience it on one’s own skin, like having a job exported to cheap incompetents in Bangalore, but shining the light on the cockroaches of Wall Street can only do us all good. Unfortunately, because of the money involved, our systems, government and media (such as the conservative WSJ) are always reactive, instead of (I hate this word) pro-active, or anticipatory. Note how much effort it took to flush Bernie Madoff out. And GF Global?
I think (Mittens) Romney was hoping that people would somehow confuse him with his father, George Romney, who whether he was good or bad or you liked him or not, was indeed a captain of industry and was in the productive (and not speculative) segment.
Limbaugh is right. A discussion of ethical capitalism is for liberals and fools. Romney should be attacked for romneycare. And his flip flops. His stint with bain is not conservatives’ problem with romney.
