Newt Gingrich: I Crossed The Line (Bain Criticism)

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Newt Gingrich signaled Wednesday that he believes his criticism of Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital is a mistake — and that he’s created an impression that he was echoing Democratic rhetoric.

Gingrich conceded the problem when pressed by a Rick Santorum supporter at a book-signing here Wednesday.

“I’m here to implore one thing of you. I think you’ve missed the target on the way you’re addressing Romney’s weaknesses. I want to beg you to redirect and go after his obvious disingenuous about his conservatism and lay off the corporatist versus the free market. I think it’s nuanced,” Dean Glossop, an Army Reservist from Inman, S.C., said.

I’m listening to Newt on Hannity now. He must be under extreme pressure to pull back on this - he sounds p*****.

Do you REALLY think Perry even knows how to put on a ringtone?...much less had anything to do with it?

I think it was his call, since he's out there talking it up. I know some of his campaign people tell him what to say, but I think in this instance it's his decision.

In your "heartless" you know Perry is right!

Actually I think that Perry and Gingrich probably shouldn't have attacked on this. There are many things they can attack Romney on. It's not going to help them in South Carolina.

This feels too much like them jumping on something, anything, because they are desperate to slow him down. I'm all for them stopping Romney by any means possible, but this won't do the trick. The people who support Romney have sold their souls to the devil and know him for the vile RINO that he is. They aren't going to change anybody's minds with this attack.

In fact, I think it's dumb as Hell that Gingrich and Perry are staking their campaigns on South Carolina, seeing as how it's an open primary in a year when the Democrats have an incumbent and have a huge incentive to crossover to the Republican primary and vote for the least electable candidate, which is Romney.

The GOP in SC is filing lawsuits and legislation to end SC being an open primary, but it's too late for 2012. Romney and RuPaul will benefit from crossover voters, and then what? Perry made all those claims about SC and how important it is to his campaign, and same with Gingrich, and both of them will probably underperform the polls when the votes are counted thanks to crossover Democrats voting for Romney.

DUH! That’s called flip-flopping. that’s why we excoriated John Kerry and why we jeer The Obama.

So we should praise Newt for it?

Well, I read the article and didn’t see a walking back or an apology.

I saw his attack on Romney morphed into an attack on Obama, but he didn’t take it back. Probably wishes he hadn’t done it, though.

After he’s done the damage, he IS walking back. That’s just Newt. And Hannity is cha by re-directing the blame to Perry. BFF ever. Pretty lame.

Who cares what Newt said. The movie will accomplish what it was made to do. It will help keep Romney from becoming president. Romney absolutely destroyed Newt’s chances and I would like to shake his hand for doing whatever he can to keep Romney from destroying the republican party.

Obama/Hillary were already planning to use this hit piece.
My prediction is Obama/Hillary win 40 out of 50 states.
I would rather see Obama reelected than see RINOs destroy conservatism in the republican party. They can now concentrate on winning the senate. Sarah Palin can rescue the party in 2016.

This is what Faux News and the RINOs get for giving the nomination to some New England liberal who should have switched parties years ago.

Thank you Mr. Speaker for a job well done. Now where is my ballot so I can write in Elmer Fudd for president. I need a beer.

That’s basically what he said at his Townhall meeting this morning. There wasn’t anything I could disagree with him about that.

All the wagons circling around Romney may as well circle the drain because if they think THIS from Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry is bad, just WAIT until Hussein and his $1 billion war chest get going.

Romney is TOAST—either way it’s sliced (no pun intended). This is exactly WHOM the dems and the media want as the GOP nominee. They know how easy it will be to paint him as the “enemy” of the lower income and middle class.

This truly is the stupid party. :^(

For all his flaws and faults, Mitt Romney's work at Bain and Bain Capital has been an overall success. Newt is making a huge mistake attacking him on this. It could backfire in a big way.

The economy is still the biggest campaign issue to most voters, and when they investigate the premises of these attack ads, they will learn that when it comes to business, no other candidate comes close to Romney's experience and success in saving companies from going under. Newt should stick with Romney's lack of sincerity on many other key conservative issues.

If that's true then what attack is going to work? The Bain stuff is probably the best attack available on his electability since it can be used in the general election, unlike attacks "from the right."

Are you still beating that dead and horribly mangled corpse.

It’s been explained so many times. the only thing Rick Perry did wrong was use the emotional argument.

He should have explained it as a pragmatic decision which is what it was. He didn’t lead the fight on this anyway, simply signed a bill that the Texas legislature had approved by almost a total majority.

The theory was that illegals in Texas are feeding at the trough. Although most of them work and work hard, they work at low-paying, mostly manual labor jobs, so the children who are born in the USA are entitled to certain benefits, including medicaid and food stamps. And they don’t pay taxes, except sales and SS.

The theory was that if such children met strict criteria, graduated high school with good average, were on the track to become citizens and so on, they could be eligible for in-state tuition rates.

They were not given free tuition. they just paid in-state rates which helped them and helped the colleges.

The hope was that we could move some of these kids into better paying jobs so that they would contribute to Texas economy and not just bleed it.

And, by the way, this was done ten years ago.

And, by the way again, this is not exclusive to Texas.

Perry haters have about 4 dead horses they drag out to beat when anyone says anything favorable about Perry.

It’s pathetic.

He didn’t bash capitalism and he’s not “walking it back.” He said that Obama’s class-warfare rhetoric had clouded the issue, which was not about capitalism. It was about Romney’s true past business activities, not the phony image Romney has been allowed to project of himself as a heroic “captain of industry.”

That said, I think Gingrich can permit himself to say, “oh, sorry if you’re offended, old man” to Mitt - the classic non-apology apology, especially after the trash that the Romney campaign published about Gingrich (and had to withdraw under threat of a libel suit).

That’s the same impression I got from his interview w/ Hannity as well...saying that’s it’s impossible to talk about Romney’s record when Obama has poisoned the well.

did anybody here read the article? It is a misleading, lying headline to start with.. newt never said he crossed the line, he never even apologized.

A santorum supporter, getting his book signed, told Newt he thought the bain attack was a bad idea, because people didn’t understand, and it was too “nuanced” – that is what Newt agreed with – that it was too nuanced for the general public to understand, especially with Obama in the background echoing..

Newt was probably signing the book, never even looked up, and agreed with the voter in a pleasant way - like he does a million times a day on the trail.

What else does the story say – Gingrich signaled – what is that – “signaled” – in politico’s dream world maybe...

I think Newt has a severe case of adult ADHD.

Thier was someone who claimed to be a shrink call in one of the bigger talk show host and note she felt he was.

Their is somewhere in the CSPAN archives an interview with the Late Tony Blankley were he commented he might ADD, I know I saw it...
