Marijuana doesn't harm lung function, study found

CHICAGO—Smoking a joint once a week or a bit more apparently doesn't harm the lungs, suggests a 20-year study that bolsters evidence that marijuana doesn't do the kind of damage tobacco does.

The results, from one of the largest and longest studies on the health effects of marijuana, are hazier for heavy users -- those who smoke two or more joints daily for several years. The data suggest that using marijuana that often might cause a decline in lung function, but there weren't enough heavy users among the 5,000 young adults in the study to draw firm conclusions.

Still, the authors recommended "caution and moderation when marijuana use is considered."

You mean four out of five dentists who recommend Trident gum to their patients who chew gum really don't recommend Trident gum at all?

Remember when 4 out of 5 doctors recommended Chesterfield cigarettes?

If you smoked just one cigarette a week it wouldn't hurt your lungs either....

Do you suggest he was puffing joints through his toe?

Was he stepping on his butts to put them out? If so, the evidence is clear.

American illegal drug users are too stupid, lazy and chicken to face reality so they use illegal drugs to ignore reality for a few minutes. I hate cowards.

Did you say "illegal" so you don't have to justify and/or excuse alcohol consumption?

I merely pointed out the hypocrisy of people who rant against tobacco smoking but rationalize and extoll the smoking of pot.

I hear what you're saying. You're right.

Having spent my fair share of time at Phish and Grateful Dead concerts back in the day, I am fully aware of what the Pot culture is all about.

Blech. And the "terrible music" culture as well.

I think cocaine and heroin were also used at one time as very effective cough suppressants.

I really don’t think that we have to worry about marijuana use anymore. I just heard that Hostess, maker of Twinkies, went bankrupt. No more munchies, no more smoking.

Crazily enough, here's how the two stories are positioned right now on Boston.com's left-hand bar:

Study: No lung damage from marijuana
Twinkies maker files for Chapter 11

Too bad Twinkies couldn't hold on for just a little longer. Imagine how "high" their stock would soar if only mary jane were decrimmed?

As a matter of fact, it seems that the youths up here in the leafy suburbs of Boston don't even mess with the demon weed anymore. That's for hippies. Now, it's all about raiding mumsie's or daddy's prescribed pharma-grade stuff. Seeing someone get all uppity over weed would actually be kind of nostalgic and quaint . . . like ordering yourself up a Moxie or a sarsaparilla.

“Like cigarette smokers, marijuana users can develop throat irritation and coughs, but the study didn’t focus on those. It also didn’t examine lung cancer, but other studies haven’t found any definitive link between marijuana use and cancer”

There were cigarette smokers mixed in there as well so there was no actual control which makes this invalid, by scientific standards. So this is a bullshit advocacy study like global warming.

” Who are you going to believe? A peer reviewed study conducted by a prestigious university or an anonymous poster ....”

I will believe the anonymous poster if the forum is FR. Forget the prestigious university!

(I think that was your point.)

Heck, one tobacco cigarette once a week wouldn’t harm anybody, either. The headline is very misleading. But I guess you knew that.

Did someone say "stoner?" MJ may not affect the lungs (which probably is junk science BS), but there's no question about what it does to the brain:

There are worse things than coughing.

Marijuana has been PROVEN — P.R.O.V.E.N. Beyond dispute. Without a doubt — proven to cause changes in brain structure and function in young people.

It’s also indisputable that young people who smoke pot develop schizophrenia in greater numbers than non-smokers.

Those facts alone are reason enough to ban it.

There are lots of others.
