Despite Iranian threats warning the U.S. Navy to keep its distance from the Strait of Hormuz, for the second time in a week the U.S. military has rescued distressed Iranian mariners in the Gulf waters.
In the early morning hours of January 10th the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Monomoy responded to flares fired from the Iranian cargo dhow, Ya-Hussayn, which was experiencing engine troubles 50 miles off the coast of Iraq.
Monomoy launched their small boat and rescued two men off the dhow and four others tied to a life raft off the stern.
In all, six Iranians were taken off the boat, one of whom is being treated for severe burns he suffered in the engine room, according to Pentagon Spokesman George Little. All of the men were provided water, blankets, and halal meals and were later transferred to the Iranian Coast Guard vessel Naji 7.
According to a Navy press release, Hakim Hamid-Awi, the owner of the Iranian dhow, told the Coast Guard's Rescue Coordination Center that "without your help, we were dead. Thank you for all that you did for us."
The Captain of the Naji 7 also thanked the Coast Guard for their cooperation, according to the release.

Well done!
How about swapping them for the American that the Iranians just sentenced to death. I don’t see Obama doing that though. That would be the right thing to do so that leaves out Obama.
.
The only worry I have is that one of these rescues will be a “set up”.
Are we sure that these guys aren’t just trying to escape from Iran?
Same here.
Heard that Al Jazeera broadcast was blocked in Iran this morning.
My first thought as well... "We have confirmed that the infidel devil will converge on the decoy within 12 minutes Captain Ahmed!"
I can see it now. These moron Iranians are going to have a nuke reactor leak and spill, then beg us to help bail them out.
Idiots.
No, that would be kidnapping on the high seas and hostage-taking, acts of piracy. Countries that like to think of themselves as civilized don't do things like that.
ditto. two ‘rescues’ in few weeks...?? something doesn’t smell right or maybe I’ve just become too cynical.
Mike
I bet if their rescuers would asked if they (Iranians) like to come live and work in America, pretty sure they’d would accept it without hesitation!
That would be against the Law of the Sea. They aren’t the ones responsible for the death sentence. Any mariner in distress gets help from anyone else on the high seas. Now, if we were able to catch Iranian navy men laying mines, as we did in 1988, we could offer an exchange. But you don’t grab civilians and demand exchanges. That makes us no better than them.
As for a setup... the Coast Guard has LOTS of experience boarding boats where there may be armed men or an ambush. Don’t worry about that.
Because we can. The Coast Guard takes the fight to the enemy and always has, since 1790.
GO COASTIES!
Coast Guard can put a boat anywhere in the world where there’s a few feet of water. And look sharp doing it.
Why dont we ask the Russians to rescue them.
I am telling you, this stuff is not accidental. This is being done to test the US Navy’s responses and such.
One of these things is going to explode or try to ambush the assistance boat.
