Sacramento -- Gov. Jerry Brown's budget plan released last week poses a stark choice for Californians: approve a five-year $35 billion tax increase in November or watch the hatchet drop on public school funding - with cuts so deep the school year could be shortened by almost a month.
Under the proposal, schools would face the bulk of midyear cuts if voters reject the taxes. Of the $5.3 billion Brown wants to slice from the budget if his plan is turned down, $4.8 billion would be taken from public schools.
In releasing his budget, the governor rejected the notion that choosing schools to face the largest proposed cut was a political move to motivate voters to approve his tax plan. Numerous polls show Californians rank public school funding as their top priority.
When asked why he is aiming the possible cuts at schools, Brown replied, "That's where the money is!"
The governor's proposal - if the taxes are approved - would provide $52.5 billion to schools, an increase over the $47.6 billion in this year's budget. But if that does not happen, schools face dark prospects that may include a significantly shortened school year.
Administration officials said they have yet to decide whether that will be the route to achieve those savings, and doing so would require approval by the Legislature along with negotiations with teachers unions across the state. Getting both to sign on, which would mean teachers agreeing to cut their pay by more than three weeks, would be a difficult task.
Nancy Waymack, executive director of policy and operations for the San Francisco Unified School District, said teachers in the district would not agree to such a change. The district has made about $113 million in cuts over the past several years, she said.

They always go for what affects likely middle class voters first and I call BS. Shortening the school year by a month would in effect be a tax on parents of children that have their kids in daycare. It is always cops and teachers first when the cuts come. How about cutting off the EBT cards at KFC and all the Indian casinos and strip clubs? But that might actually save some money.
Why is the question always tax increases or kids? How about cut the funding for the arts and other unnecessary things? We like them frame the question. That’s why newt is so popular, he always says “your asking the wrong question”.
Such BS. I’m not impressed by this arguement coming from our esteemed governor.
Our schools employ so many unionized employees with job titles such as “Assistant to the Director for Third Grade Science Development” that elimating them would save billions.

There are literally dozens of “boards” chaired by termed out legslators that do nothing but waste taxpayer money and create mountains of red tape that choke businesses. Not a word of shutting ANY of those down.

Democrats are very abusive to their base and the people in general. They use tactics like this to get their way or cause chaos if they don’t.
California voters should call Brown’s bluff, but they’re not smart enough to do so, so they will screw their own kids rather than fix, step by step, all the government employees in the state, who are the real problem.
They’re “Shortening the year” in California? Nice weather.....good beaches.....and now they control the space/time continuum. What a great state!
Bingo. It’s alwayss the police, fire fighters or those useless teachers. In a bloated government as large as Taxifornia, I bet there are tons that could be cut without any effect on anyone. Nope. Let’s scare the uninformed public telling them their children are at risk, the house is going to burn down or the police won’t show up. You have to love the Commurats. They know how to play the scare game. No one any better at it.

The ‘stark choice’ is: the govt sector has budget problems,
or the private sector has budget problems (due to a tax hike).
I side with the private (voluntary) sector. What’s left of it, here in CA.
