NATOs International Security Assistance Force did not disclose the nationalities of the troops, but most of those serving in southern Afghanistan are American or British. The south of Afghanistan includes the volatile provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, the traditional heartland of the Taliban.
Four of the eight were killed Friday in a single explosion, military officials said in a statement, and a fifth died as the result of an earlier insurgent attack, a phrase often used to characterize a firefight with Taliban militants.
Late Thursday, military officials announced that three troops were killed in the south by a makeshift bomb. Such crude but powerful bombs remain the largest single killer of Western troops in Afghanistan.

2012 is off to an ominous start; a US Navy EOD tech was killed by an IED on Monday and now these eight fatalities.
On December 21, a bomb killed 5 Polish Troops.
December saw the deaths of twenty-seven US and Allied personnel; fifteen Americans, five Poles, four Brits, two French, and a New Zealander.
Pisses me off when I see these posts. You might want to rethink that. For the month of December there were the following casualties: New Zealand - 1 France - 2 UK - 4 Poland - 5 US - 15 Yes, the US always has the most but nearly half were from other countries and their loved ones miss them just as much as we do ours.
Agree. I flashed back to the posthumous Medal of Honor award given by algore who said the Marine died in service to the United Nations.
Just another footnote in the books our admirals and generals all seem to be writing.
