The Jihad Will Be YouTubed by Raffaello Pantucci
December 15, 2011
FOREIGN POLICY - The AFPAK Channel
SNIPPET: "While clearly the technology to make such videos is something that is universal, it does seem as though it is aspirant jihadists in the West who find it easiest to use. There was no evidence that Gul was being directed by foreign terrorist organizations to produce his material, and his case shows the continued existence of young Westerners producing radical material on their own. It may indeed be the case that the virtual armies have yet to fully emerge as active warriors on the battlefield, but in the meantime they are doing a great deal to keep the jihadist flame alive on the Web, either by themselves or at the direction of organized parties."

Social Networks & The Online Jihad
World Threats.com ^ | October 26, 2011 | Posted by Candice Lanier

SNIPPET: In July, the British government warned that Al Qaedas exploitation of social networking websites is on the rise.
SNIPPET: The massive and multifarious network of websites and social media has presented a challenge to authorities in trying to combat it. Additionally, civil liberty concerns have conflicted with government efforts to spy on communications.
Reducing terrorist activity on social media sites has been particularly difficult because users have adopted new forms of communication to conform with the new formats. Many Arabic speakers on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other sites use Arabizi, a form of colloquial Arabic written in the Latin alphabet and numbers. This allows the use of a standard English-language keyboard for typing messages. There exists, however, no standard version of Arabizi. It varies from country to country, even among groups within countries and is affected by differences in dialect.

SNIPPET: Note: PWP stands for PassWord-Protected, meaning that a login is required to view - let alone participate in - discussions. Since some in the audience dont understand the significance of this, allow me to spell it out: if only members can read the forum, then anyone observed reading the forum is a member. They have zero deniability (they couldnt have accidentally wandered into the site), and they had to make the effort to join (an expression of intent).
While the goal here is to present a range of sites, the fact is that the jihadis themselves have largely coalesced at Shmukh and Ansar Arabic.

TOP TEN JIHADI FORUMS, AS OF 14 FEBRUARY, 2011
SNIPPET: Assembled with the help of my dear brothers in Fateh al-Islam (and their minders in the Syrian intelligence service). The [PWP] notation indicates the site is password protected. Theres nothing worse than the mournful wailing of analysts, graduate students, and reporters who find themselves locked out of their favorite forum. Join early, join often, save important discussions as you find them, try not to say anything too embarrassing, and if youre a civilian, make some effort to let your friendly neighborhood secret police know that youre a good guy, not a bad guy, so they dont have to waste time and money investigating you. Forums are not just websites, they are battlefields, and spectators are not particularly welcome by any of the combatants.

I always get a kick out of people who tell me I give away intelligence for free.
What I do is watch how information moves. Keep in mind that the subject covered on this site are pretty darn esoteric by most standards. What kind of people, for example, even know who Oussama Salhab is? Answers include: Oussama Salhab, his family, friends, associates in and out of Hizballah, people he does business with, spies of various nations, etc.
Yep. The barn is free, and so is the food.

“New Jihadi Media Groups”
by IPT News Jan 5, 2012 at 6:22 pm
SNIPPET: “The past month saw the launch of several new Arabic jihadi media groups, including an organization focused exclusively on Tunisia. The growth in Arabic jihadi media contrasts with a decline in English-language propaganda, following last year’s drone strike on English-language al-Qaida propagandists Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan.
Among the newly formed and newly announced groups are the Ibn Taymiyya Center for Media, the al-Ibada Foundation for Media Production, and the al-Qayrawan Media Foundation. While the first two are relatively new and will focus more generally on jihadi issues relevant across terrorist organizations, al-Qayrawan is actually eight months old focuses on local affairs relevant to Tunisian jihadists.”
