Lock & Load (NM)

No one knows exactly why, but a lot of people are interested in packing heat.

In fact, FBI data suggest that gun sales in New Mexico and nationally will hit record levels in 2011.

Will Hogsett, sales director at Calibers Shooter Sports Center said strong sales at his store may be due to an improving economy or lingering fears about stronger gun control before the 2012 elections.

Sales of handguns and shotguns continue to be the big sellers among people looking for protection in their homes, he said. “The big thing people come to us for is home defense.”

The FBI reports that the number of background checks required to buy a firearm hit a national one-month record of more than 1.5 million in November and remained strong this month, CNN has reported.

In New Mexico, the number of FBI National Instant Criminal Background checks totaled 10,011 in November, up 14 percent from about 8,800 in November 2010.

Thanks c-b. My husband just got a semi-automatic and I realized today I was unable to rack it without difficulty. Hence the reason for research! Appreciate the insight :)

How much you looking to spend? ... EAA has a nice revolver in .357 magnum you can load with .38 +P hollowpoints and be well protected. If you can afford more, Smith and Ruger make very nice revolvers. In shotguns, go for a twenty gage semi-auto.

If my hands hurt most of the time, I would look into one of these:

Nine rounds of 22LR or 22Mag with changeable cylinders.

You could handle this one for sure.

That’s fine if you are in your home or your car, ...

Came across an interesting video that could save grief if I'm stopped for a traffic violation. The narrator says it helps if you notify the officer upfront that you have a CCW permit and hand him the permit with your driver's license.

Thoughts on that anyone?

I wrote 20" (inch). Mine is 12ga, probably same as yours.

Samantha should have read further down in her own article...

“The narrator says it helps if you notify the officer upfront that you have a CCW permit and hand him the permit with your driver’s license. “

Although it is not the law here, it is very good practice. I go even a bit further when stopped, I first remove my DL and CCW from wallet, then registration and insurance card from glove box, next I roll down window and place both hands on steering wheel at the 10:00 and 2:00 positions.

I have been stopped numerous times over the years including three times this last year in DWI checkpoints and have never had a problem with any of the officers.

I’m in Arizona, I don’t think it is much different in New Mexico, I have always done that when I got stopped, the officer always thanked me for telling him.

Where I live I need to carry a gun because I hike, alone with my dog, in remote areas and there’s some wildlife I’d rather not run into without a weapon.

In some states the law is that you must notify.

In Oregon, there is no requirement to notify and my instructor advised against it.

I have never been asked to get out of a vehicle, but would notify at that point, if it ever comes up.
