Could be something new. I bought five big boxes last June. Haven’t been back to the store since.

If he wasn’t Muslim, they would have released his name.

My first thought as well.

The TSA is worthless.

I snuck right through with an explosive personality.

Last time I looked the local farm store still had “strike anywhere” matches. Maybe I should stock up! Back when I was a kid I used to make girls swoon by lighting them on my teeth. (Swooning is when they roll their eyes and walk away, right?)

‘This went on for many years. . . ‘

In Queens Village, Long Island, NY, a kid of 12 went on his bike to the local pub and brought back a bucket of suds for a family party. Draft was preferred.
In this same neighborhodd one could get fresh pumpernickle bread and coldcuts from the Jewish deli, crumb cake from the German bakery, visit the Jewish candy and soda store, get produce from the Italian grocer, etc, etc.
Many other ‘ethnic’ shops.
The barber had a back ‘private’ section where women’s hair was done.

Some fathers never shopped at any of these stores - - - not at all unusual, after working all day; performing maintenance on the house and yard on Sat., and attending church on Sunday. When stores were closed . . . except maybe the bakery!

This was the era (’30’s, ‘40’s - even ‘50’s) when kids were always sent on errands with a list. It was not punishment!
Most families had trained their kids to help out.
Expect this was going on all over the country.

...case of dynamite and blasting caps...

It is a gross violation of safety rules to carry caps and explosives together.

Yeah, I thought Elky’s dad would have insisted they be carried in separate sacks.

some places like Evanston (IL) split hairs... it was devoutly Methodist, and they came to the compromise that it was okay to sell ice cream but not soda on Sundays. so they put chocolate syrup right on the ice cream instead of in seltzer, and so was born the scandalously named Sundae.

‘__________scandalously named Sundae.’

For reals???!

Sometimes I have wondered about the name ‘Sundae’ for that ice cream selection.
It was always weird: SundaY, church - SundaE, ice cream.
I’m going with your def.

Must be a Jersey thing. When I was a kid my dad sent me down to the corner store to get his smokes.

Actually, I grew up on Long Island (NY).

But, can you read? Do you have a problem with the English language?

Okay, technically, the caps were usually somewhere between my gonads and the gas tank.

My Dad was building a housing development in upscale Brecksville Ohio. The original owner’s house was being used as an office. One day, as a kid, I was tasked with cleaning out the basement of that house. I found 50 cases of dynamite, all sweating like crazy. It was no big deal then. My Dad got someone to remove them the next day.
