CNSNews.com) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, says he has no plans to reverse the Obama administration’s repeal of the ban on homosexuals serving in the U.S. military

In an editorial meeting in early November with the Des Moines Register, which endorsed him for the Iowa caucuses pending on Jan. 3, Romney was asked, “How do you feel about gays serving openly in the military?”

Romney said, “That’s already occurred. I’m not planning on reversing that at this stage.”

The reporter followed up, “But you’re comfortable with it?”

The guys used to make fun of them. I wasn’t privy to what actually happened.

But you see, even by your account they were there.

More Republicans support gays serving openly in the military than oppose it, a new CBS poll shows.

Just weeks after the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” 48 percent of GOP respondents said they favor “strongly” or “somewhat” the open service of gays and lesbians in the military, while 41 percent oppose it.

The plurality of Republicans voters who support open service has not changed significiantly since DADT was repealed by Congress in December 2010, over the objections of many Republican politicians. Back then, 50 percent of Republican respondents supported the concept of open service for gays and lesbians.

The concept of open service gathers even stronger support among Americans more broadly. In the CBS poll, 68 percent of respondents said that they favored gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. Among this group, only 22 percent of respondents opposed it open service.

The 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which said that gays and lesbians could serve if they kept their sexual orientations private, was officially repealed on Sept. 20, 2011.

So you want to start hauling married (to women) sailors to the brig because they gave planted a big kiss on their wife in public after 9 months at sea?

Republican presidential front-runner Newt Gingrich is siding with social conservatives on how the U.S. armed forces should treat gays and women, according to a survey released Monday.

Mr. Gingrich, who is leading in the polls for the GOP presidential nomination, told the Military Culture Coalition he would have voted against allowing open homosexuals in the military and, as president, would favor an extensive review for repeal of the gay ban known as “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

The former House speaker also does not favor women in direct ground combat units. And he supports the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union of one man and one woman.

I will never vote for Romney - PERIOD! And I don’t care what the consequences are, they would be the same with him in office too.

May as well as run as Ozero’s twin.

I think he should run against 0 bummer in the (d) primaries. He might actually win.

FWIW, if I were living in Iowa now, I would probably caucus for Bachmann or even Rick Santorum if he gains traction. Gingrich strikes me as another GOP establishment type with the advantage that he is probably a little more conservative than Mitt Romney and a lot more articulate than Rick Perry.

I could definitely vote for him next November if he were the nominee, but we would have to keep a closer eye on him than we did Bush II.

You must have missed the article about Newt telling the fruit that he should vote for Obama.

But lets face facts.

I don’t like Romney, I got no use for him whatsoever, but lets be honest.

The cat is out of the bag. No new President will be able to put it back until the evidence of the mistake builds to a point where it endangers the military’s mission, and even then it will be tough.

>The UCMJ has been changed to allow sodomy, so what is the difference anymore? My son (in the service) tells me this is true because he went through several days worth of training on it not so long ago.

I had to go through that training too, even though I am retiring at the end of Jan. I wanted to throw up about some of the suggestions in that half day of sitting in a classroom.

Notice that Newt says he would only ask for a review. This is consistent with Newt’s past somewhat socially liberal record. If you are happy with a “review”, he’s your guy.

I will vote for him if he is the nominee, but without great enthusiasm.

I may not agree with the policy but it appears there to stay. But just because gays get to serve openly doesn’t mean they get a pass on acting professionally in and out of uniform, or get to be cowards in the face of nation’s enemies.

If you are going to be queer in the military, you better be a card carrying killer of men queer. Our very safety and soveriegnty demands it.

I hope that's the case, if they must be let in, then they must be up to the job. I know it is their country too but I cannot see how a homosexual lifestyle can be compatible with a military lifestyle. I have a good friend who is gay, I have no problem with that, but I an never see him in the military, even he admits that. We do need to cut the PC crap and say, "do your job or you're out."

If I had any kids, the way things are now and appear to be headed, I would not want them in the military, I would discourage them. If they want to defend he country, I would suggest joining one of the unorganized militias.

One of my younger co-workers wanted to sign up after 9-11 happened, his father said, "if you do, I'll beat you up and disown you." His father was a Vietnam Vet and remembers all the abuse he went through when he came home.

I noticed maybe one, (who met the measures I described) among tens of thousands I came in contact with. You made it sound like they were everywhere; Not true!

There was a time when our society kept their numbers low by demand. Now, it is almost in style to be one. The perversion will increase and our society will die because of it. (Greeks, Roman Empire, etc.)

In other words, you lied about Newt. If I’m wrong, please provide the article where it says (as you did) that Newt has the same view as Romney.
