Ron Paul is now leading in Iowa polls of GOP voters. Its quite possible if not likely that hell win the Hawkeye State caucuses on Jan 3. Hes well positioned in New Hampshire, too. Depending on how he does there, Representative Paul could scramble the entire Republican presidential race.
Naturally, in light of Pauls surge in fortunes, those in the party who disapprove of the Texas libertarian are now moving to attack him.
First up this week was the Weekly Standard, a newsmagazine notable for its (fruitless) efforts to get New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and/or Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin into the GOP race. It ran a piece by journalist James Kirchik about the racist language contained in newsletters issued under Pauls name in the 1980s and 1990s.
For decades, Mr. Kirchik writes, Paul promoted hateful and conspiratorial nonsense, including outlandish tales of racial violence, and hate speech about Martin Luther King, Jr.
This is not a new story Kirchik and others have written about it in years past. Paul has defended himself by pointing out that he did not write any of this stuff himself and he did not know who the ghost writers producing it were.
Asked about the Kirchik story Tuesday during an appearance on CNNs American Morning, Paul said that it must mean he was doing well, since people are starting to dig up old charges to try to stop him.
It wasnt good but I didnt write [the stories] and those arent my beliefs, so I sleep well, said Paul.
Then Wednesday the conservative blog RedState posted a piece titled, Ron Paul Hates Republicans and Everything They Stand For.
Written by contributing editor Leon Wolf, the piece focuses on

Rock on, Presidio.
He blames American fisrt.
He’s says the terrorist were justified in killing innoncent Americans on 911.
He would rather raise the white flag of surrender rather than fight.
“Save” the Republican Party? Interesting assertion, considering:
1. Ron Paul supported the repeal of DADT.
2. Ron Paul attributes 9-11 to AMERICAN policy, not Islamofascist aggression.
3. Ron Paul says Lets just be friends and mind our own business about Iranian nukes.
4. Ron Paul supports the communist-leaning OWS.
5. Ron Paul and Code Pink are aligned vis-a-vis Israel.
6. Ron Paul babbles on late-night talk shows about Michele Bachmann hating muslims and wanting to go get them.
8. Ron Paul published racist newsletters in the early 90s.
9. Ron Paul labeled espionage turncoat Bradley Manning a hero.
10. Ron Paul opposes the death penalty.
11. Ron Paul opposed school vouches for DC schools
12. Ron Paul opposes military border patrols to battle drugs & terrorism
13. Ron Paul believes we manufactured fear about Saddam, Al Qaeda, & Ahmadinejad.
How exactly are THOSE stances going to “save” the GOP?
Yes, I also agree with Paul that the decades-long War on Drugs has cost us much of our constitutional protection. Both the Fourth and Fifth Amendment have been nullified by unreasonable and warrant-less searches, no-knock ninjas, and seizures of property without due process.
That kid down the road smoking reefer is so scary.
I haven't had a drink of alcohol let alone smoked dope in more than thirty years, but I do not see the problem with getting the federal government out of the drug-enforcement business.
FURP!! You, homo-loving, abortionist, anti-Semitic, anti-military, racist, God and morality-hating LIBERALtarian non-conservative POS!!
I’m sure employers will be so happy to have more stoners in the workplace/s
As opposed to the stupid party nominating Romney in the first place? How is that a win for team stupid?
But some folks around here have blinders on. Or they are so intent on destroying the Fed and those darn (joo) bankers that they are willing to take it in the pants in every other field of political endeavor.
“Disowning Lincoln?”
I’ve got no problem with that one. Lincoln marks the absolute lowest point of the Presidency, as far as I’m concerned.
If only it were his Soros -like support of Drug legalization.
His “foreign policy” ( if he had one) is much more dangerous.

I must admit my own temptation to vote for Ron Paul in that event. Better to lose with a man willing to fight then to win with a man willing only to surrender & join the enemy in all but name.
If we were to follow the Constitution a little more closely, employers would be free to do drug testing and not hire stoners. The private sector actually works much better than the government. It’s true.

Same here with what I have learned about Lincoln in the past handful of years. I want to see that traitors monument torn down and replaced with one to Booth in the democratic tradition: “Sic semper tyrannis”
No man who would hold a people prisoner to its goverment by force of arms deserves anything but contempt and revolt.
“If only it were his Soros -like support of Drug legalization.

I woudl risk 4 years of Ron Paul’s foolish foreign policy, and accept his Federal drug legalization. For a chance to reclaim our other liberty’s.

I woudl risk 4 years of Ron Paul’s foolish foreign policy, and accept his Federal drug legalization. For a chance to reclaim our other liberty’s at home.
And I don’t agree with typical Libertarian foreign policy.
Although one has to wonder how it could be significantly worse than what we’ve been doing recently under Obama and Clinton.
I recognize that government has some legitimate function, but most government should be local and decentralized. The federal government needs to undergo a lot of amputation to be healthy.
Ok there we go.I agree totally with your sentiments. I want the fascist Government agencies cut down to the bare minimum.
He is an open border, Libertarian. He apparently has absolutely no idea what the goal of Islamofascism is really.
Amadjihad just wants a nuke so he can be RESPECTED. OMG, Paul is deranged.
Or does he think the Islamofascist are kidding when they chant death to America.
