Anybody Been Hit by Phone Spammers?

Posted on 12/19/2011 4:34:09 PM PST by peteyd

I rec'd a call on 12/16 saying I have been named in a lawsuit. They have legal papers to serve on me and it is against my name and ss#.In checking the phone number ,I see it is from some debt collection agency, that changes its number and seems to threaten people. The caller said, she is giving me a chance to call the number she has provided me,to find out what this legal document is about before she comes to my house and goes to my place of employment.A second call today ,the caller said I needed to call today, and if I didn't she will be at my house tomorrow, between 12 ad 5pm. All my accounts are clean with no negatives or judgments and no debts.

get a burner phone with data, make them forward their actual contact info verify, then due a small claims suit in your town.

“I think I would report it to your phone co and to the local police to start out.”

What celtic gal said. If you were going to be sued you would have had a process server at your door. Not this boiler room crap.

I like #17’s idea the best.

Tell them where they can go.

Tell them to serve the papers and that you’ll turn it over to counsel. If you have a regular lawyer that you use, give them his name and tell them to serve you there. If it is a legit debt collection firm, they must stop contacting you once you tell them you have counsel. Second, they can’t contact your place of employment. That is an unfair debt collection practice in most states.

This sounds like it’s either a scam or a case of mistaken identity (I’ve had to deal with collection attempts intended for others.)

Look at your caller ID and remark ... "That's curious ... I'M unavailable also ... imagine THAT"

hang up.

If it is an 809, 284, 649, or 876 area code, it is a scam from outside the US that results in huge charges placed on your phone bill.

“Did they actually say your name and your SS number over the phone ?”

What they do is when you call back, they ask for you to verify you name and SSN. Then they attempt to implement whatever scam they have devised, to get your money and ruin your whole economic life...people fall for it every day.

My brother recently got a call from supposedly his bank, telling him he was in foreclosure, he said he was not, then they asked, can you please verify your name and address, he hung up, but some will comply, then they ask for all kinds of personal and financial info...it works for them often enough to take the risk.

Legitimate Collection Agencies don’t operate that way. Call the State AG’s office and Police.

Here is some info. They must have access to people's credit files somehow:

I have heard about something similar being played out. A company who has bought old debts for pennies will file a claim in small claims court. Many people will ignore the summons as they know they don’t owe anyone anything. The company shows up in small claims ct and you don’t and voila, they win and a judgment is issued against you.

And I would let them come to your house and have a policeman ready to arrest them for extortion.

Sophisticated phone phishing scam....

Call the cops...
Tell them your privacy has been invaded...
You suspect your identity is being stolen...

--AND--
You are legitimately afraid for your personal security as well as your real and personal property.

Oh yeah...
....and load the 12ga...

If you have CALLER ID, don’t answer the phone when they call.

However, if you do want to answer the phone, tell the person you’re reporting them to your congressman.

Then call your congressman and give them all the info.

I did that once and never heard from them again.

Thanks all.
It is an 800#.I didn’t appreciate the veiled threats as to 2nd chance and,I(the caller) will be at your house and place of employment.
I did call the Sheriffs office to report the call and yes,the call was on a Friday and again today 12/19.The call comes through as an “out of area”,with no # given.
I do have a phone block on “NOW”.
I will have to see what happens between 12 and 5pm 12/20.

Get yourself caller ID or answering machine and don’t pick up any call unless you recognize the caller. The do not call list is not working and many of the spammers are now spoofing their phone numbers.

Do what I did once when my first wife returned a card offering her a free pair of panty hose as a sample. She received the hose along with a bill for same. I told her to return the card saying simply that this was a free sample and she had no intention of paying. After she did that they started sending the bill in my name! When I didn’t pay they threatened to ruin my credit. I took their bill and wrote a note on the back advising them that I was not and never had been in the habit of wearing panty hose and if they did anything to damage my credit rating by the time I got through they would think their tail got caught in a sewing machine! Amazingly it worked, I never heard from them again.

I got a call like that. I told them to come to my house and TRY to take me to the courthouse. I also added that if they did they better come armed because I`m a supporter of the 2nd amendment. They never showed up or called back.
