Why did the Duggars photograph a stillborn baby? A controversial image stirs debate

When the Duggar family announced last week that the baby Michelle was carrying had died in utero, it seemed the Internet couldn’t have any less sympathy toward the fertile-to-a-fault brood. Commenters right here on Salon called them “an obscenity” who are “unfairly crowding the planet with [their] disgusting obsession” and “selfish, polluting choices,” who were, in essence, “asking for it.” Then the Duggars really ticked people off.

Making good on their promise to both name and hold a memorial for the baby, the Duggars had a service Wednesday for the child they named Jubilee Shalom Duggar. At it, they shared a card that read “There is no foot too small that it cannot leave an imprint on the world” that featured a photo of the baby’s tiny feet, and another one of “Michelle holding Jubilee’s hand.”

I thought the photo was beautiful, and a beautiful way to honor the memory of this tiny little person. No different than doing the same after losing a 2-week/month/year/decade old child. I can’t get my mind around the whole “a fetus is not a human/baby/person yet” line of thinking! Especially when you see that little hand. The Duggars would have to be psychopathic not to mourn and grieve the loss of this little one.

*** I hope pro life groups will use the photo to show the humanity of the unborn child.****

I read the obit in a local paper as they live about 25 minutes from me. Hopefully it will force Abortion groups realize a fetus is more than a “clump of tissue”.

I’ve thought for some time that the Duggars have been using the pregnancies during the show as drama to keep the show going. This is just one more example and I find it a bit disturbing.

The people decrying the photo are the same that demanded that the Bush admin allow photos of caskets returning from Iraq. Photos of death are only allowed if it serves the agenda of the left.

I didn’t know Mrs. Duggar had miscarried. Prayers up for all of them. And pfui! to those who insist the baby should be erased from memory simply because she was tiny.

... using the pregnancies during the show as drama ...

Yep, that's why I'm having a baby, too ... love the drama. It has nothing to do with the natural process that occurs when a husband and wife are fond of one another, one thing leads to another ...

“.....I find it a bit disturbing.”

Then you’re the one with a problem. What’s disturbing about acknowledging that a baby existed & has now passed??

The only people saying that the beautiful photos are wrong... are either people with guilt of their own (yes, little tiny, perfectly formed hands) OR push an agenda that deny such perfection and call it “tissue mass” or “choice”. IMHO, the photo of the tiny hands provokes sadness in me for the family and a humble reverence to life... no matter how tiny.

One of my daughters miscarried two babies at 20 weeks and 22 weeks, respectively. The hospital was prepared for those miscarriages with tiny clothing and blankets made by their volunteers! Photographing the baby was part of the services the hospital provided for the family at that time of sorrow.
Those pictures are precious to us.
I used those photos to change the heart of one pro-choice advocate I knew to that of pro-life. She had believed the “clump of cells” lie. That lie is at the heart of the libs objection to the Duggars photos of their latest child.

Well, lmr, the Duggars are raising a passle of well-behaved, well-adjusted kids— on Jim Bob’s and Michelle’s dimes, not a government handout. What disturbs you about that? In this loss, they share a pro-life message. What disturbs you about that?

My great-grandson died “during birth” without warning, a little over a year ago. The hospital gave the family the most lovely little crocheted hat and outfit, his footprints etc, along with a little handmade memory box that is lovely- we have pictures with each of the grandparents- the parents put together a memorial book. Those are precious things to us.

While I think the Duggars are a little.. strange, I don’t think what they did was in poor taste at all. Too many haters in this world.

There, fixed it.

Why?

Because they didn’t abort it and have no guilt.

Deepest sympathy to the Duggar family and everybody who ever had to lose a child.

This is the worst thing which can possibly happen to a parent in this life :-(

“The hospital was prepared for those miscarriages with tiny clothing and blankets made by their volunteers!”

My daughter is a pediatric nurse who helps counsel families who have lost infants. One of the volunteer organizations she works with takes donated bridal and fomal clothes to make beautiful, tiny burial outfits for these angels. I’ve seen the comfort that this simple gesture provides.

Leftist aren’t just wrong. These people are monsters. I am a christian, a conservative and even lean libertarian on some issues. I feel that if the Duggars can support their own children without one thin dime from the government, then let them have as many kids as they can afford financially.

And to hell with those that have a problem with it.

(it CAN be a clown car if you can afford the payments)

I do not watch the show but it seems to me that you are making an assumption based on a personal opinion with facts not in evidence.
