President Barack Obama is in big trouble, with both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich leading him in a dozen key swing states, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Romney leads Obama among registered voters 48 percent to 43 percent in the 12 states the survey covers. And former House Speaker Gingrich leads the president 48 percent to 45 percent. Nationwide, Obama leads Gingrich 50 percent to 44 percent and Romney 47 percent to 46 percent, according to the poll.
The 12 states include Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Obama won all of them in 2008. Each could go either way next year, and Obama needs to win half of their electoral votes to gain a second term, according to USA Today.

The decrease in the number of voters who identify themselves as Democrats, coupled with the increase of those who call themselves independents, will make Obamas re-election quest more difficult. Excluding those who lean Democratic, the portion of voters who identify themselves as Democrats has slipped to 30 percent from 35 percent in 2008. Meanwhile, the portion of independents has climbed to 42 percent from 35 percent.
In three of the eight swing states that have party registration Colorado, Iowa, and New Hampshire independents now outnumber both Republicans and Democrats.
Thats bad news for Obama,

But trends in ideological demographics are working for Republicans and against Democrats. In the swing states poll, 44 percent of respondents called themselves conservatives, more than doubling the 21 percent who called themselves liberal.
Assuming strong support among conservatives, the Republican nominee will need only a small portion of the 35 percent of voters who call themselves moderates to win the election. Obama, on the other

I’ll let our polling experts discuss this, but generally, this is what counts. Not that the GOP is way out front in Texas or Left leads in California, but instead those 12 to 15 states that could turn one way or the other. If nothing else, this is a heartening bit of news. Now to hear from our resident experts to see what, if any, flaws this article contains.
I am a Beltway Expert.... I interpret this poll as.... ONLY Romney can defeat Obama...... {/s}
But... But...
MSNBC said last night that Democrat Enthusiasm for Obama is on the rise!
HOW CAN THIS BE??
I will not vote for McRomney!
One thing not mentioned in the survey is the increase in electoral votes for some states, many of them southern (my state of Georgia picks-up additional seats) and this can make a difference in a close contest.
I will ENTHUSIASTICALLY vote for ANY Republican over Obama. This election is tooooo important.
Ditto!
This poll is assuming an honest vote.It does not take into account the monstrous vote fraud that will be in play.
No mObama 2012.
Well, the Dems had better harness the mighty power of the Federal Reserve printing presses, if they expect to manufacture enough fraudulent votes to put Zero over the top.
He hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell, otherwise.
Obama has 300 days of game changing opportunities between now and election day. He could get us into a nuclear war, suspend elections, sign up 12 million invaders to vote — a poll right now is meaningless.
The Beast (the blog not his wife) just came out and said zero will win by a landslide.
Bump.
Expect Obama to be reelected regardless of the Republican on the Nov 2012 ballot and plan accordingly.
Tens of millions believe in Obama and always will no matter what happens, but I don’t know how many tens of millions.
You have downed drones and "how to operate this drone" intelligence captured within. Maybe even spies within. I guess no erase app like on my iPad or change "pin", should it become stolen. You have Hezbollah sited in Mexico. You have cartel lookouts on Arizona's mountain tops probably amply supplied with "guns that walked". Now, little naked Iraq becomes a tempting buffet for another Osama? We didn't even get any oil out of the "plan", and the leaders we helped 'set up' into power seem to be now out dancing with wolves. Pakistan closes off supply routes to our troops in response to the 2 dozen of their military recently killed.
This should not go well for Barack Hussein Obama's image if foreign affairs suddenly overshadows the economy and his quest for 8% unemployment by Nov will be non-notesworthy
We need a strong leader on national defense with definite diplomacy skills.
The GOP nominee has nowhere to go but down? And 0b ozo has nowhdrde to go b ut up huh? That is total, unadulterated crap! Dream on mate!
Obama has not reached Congress low approval numbers yet..he still has much further to fall.
