Newt Is the Problem
NRO ^ | 121111 | Avik Roy

Newt Gingrich’s rise to the top of the GOP polls is fueled, in part, by Republicans’ mistrust of Mitt Romney. Romney’s signature Massachusetts health-care law, the model for Obamacare, leads many to wonder whether Romney can challenge the president on this most important domestic issue. But any conservative who opposes Romney because of Romneycare should oppose Gingrich with thrice the intensity: Newt Gingrich is one of the principal abettors of the exploding health-care entitlement state we face today. Indeed, it’s not clear what would be worse for the cause of entitlement reform: Newt’s losing to Obama or Newt’s beating him.

“Newt Gingrich = John McCain #2”

Utter Bullshit.

Newt may be a flawed conservative, but he is no RINO like McCain nor Romney.

Newt has also pledged to repeal Obamacare.

We’ve had that problem since women were given the right to vote!

Same problem every four years!

>> We run Newt as our candidate <<

Don’t worry. Won’t happen. Even if he wins several primaries and/or caucuses during January, the air is bound to seep totally out of Newt’s balloon during the February “lull” — when there are no primaries or caucuses.

In fact, Newt’s anti-capitalistic remarks earlier today may already have blown a significant hole in the Gingrich balloon. So if the folks in New Hampshire hear a hissing sound tonight, it probably is hot air that even now is escaping!

You ankle biting lightweights can claim Gingrich is not a conservative to the hounds come home.

You’re still living on Planet Pluto...might as well be a Paultard.

Newt is just unlikeable, imo. We run Newt as our candidate, I’d expect Obama to get 60% of the women’s vote.

Obama received around 56% of the female vote in 2008. As flawed as Gingrich may be, I don't see him repelling more women than McCain.

For those who haven't noticed yet, NRO is not Buckley's National Review. The web spinoff of NR is a sanctuary for rinos and liberal weenies. Indistinguishable from New Republic. Not worth the time, if it ever was.

Someone please tell me the alternative to Gingrich. Please. If he is not our best hope just tell me who is.

I want something better too! Tell me what it is.

I would vote for Palin in a second if she got in. Bachmann self-destructed. Cain acted like a mere mortal. Santorum is not getting traction. Perry acts like he doesn’t know where he is half the time (the other half is pretty good).

We need to win.

For a long time I said I’d rather ‘no’ vote than vote for someone who wasn’t a real conservative. I figured 4 more years of the loser we have now would lead to such civil unrest that things could get set right that way. I still feel that way quite a bit. I seriously doubt that voting can solve the mess we are in.

At the end of the day for me the deal is this - The TEA Party is leaderless but we have some pretty good advisers. Mr. Robinson is one of those. If we’re going to sh!t-out anyways, I’ll follow the advice of a true conservative hero and into the breach I go.

If Newt isn’t the best we’ve got just tell me who is. I’m willing to go down fighting but we might as well try and kick the marxist traitor we have now in the teeth on the way to the ring.

I don’t care what was said about McCain. Speaker Gingrich and John McCain are VERY different.

YES, I realize (VERY well as a mater of fact) that Gingrich has flaws... but he is STILL a lot better than either McCain or Romney.

Newt may be a flawed conservative, but he is no RINO like McCain nor Romney.

I can't help but be reminded of William F. Buckley, back (I think) in the eighties, making an impassioned plea in the pages of National Review for government-mandated "volunteerism" for all eighteen-year-olds. I didn't think any less of him on account of it, but it certainly didn't do credit to his conservative credentials.

Articulate, intelligent people feel threatening to the TV educated voters, making them feel inadequate.

We have an epidemic of that around here.

I have a lot of respect for the talent of the folks over at NRO.

I have to admit though that I did let my subscription finally expire a couple of months ago after more than a 10 year relationship.

I do not think that is entirely fair or reasonable to insult people for reading it.

Personally, I simply was unable to keep up with everything that I try to read.

Too many notes so I just took a few out.

Haven’t you heard? There isn’t supposed to be any “lull” this February due to the “new rules.” The pundits are now saying that February will be “explosive” on the campaign trail.

And just which “anti-Capitalistic remarks were made by Gingrich today?

I was a Gingrich supporter until the Des Moines debate on Saturday. Gingrich came across as a mean-spirited, condescending sourpuss with an instinct to go for the low blow. When Romney argued that he has spent most of his life in the private sector and knows how jobs and wealth are created Gingrich churlishly retorted that the reason he was in the private sector was because he had lost an election to Ted Kennedy. Otherwise, he’d be a career politician and not in the private sector. The irony here is that Gingrich would still be in politics too if he hadn’t been forced to resign over charges of ethical violations. Even his own party wanted him out. At least Romney’s exit from politics came as a result of a loss to Ted Kennedy, not because of questions about his ethics.

In the same debate Gingrich called Michelle Bachmann a liar when she charged that he had supported the individual mandate in the early 1990s and more recently. He also floundered trying to explain his absolutely ridiculous proposal to establish “citizen review panels” to decide which illegal aliens get to stay and which have to go.

Twelve million illegals are going to come forward, identify themselves as illegal, pay a fine, and provide documentation showing they’ve been living here for twenty-five years and have joined a church? And who, pray tell, is going to staff Gingrich’s review panels? I can imagine the monstrous bureaucracy that will have to be created to manage this nutty program.

This guy is an ass. He’s no conservative. He has no sense of humor or humility. His ego is so inflated it makes Obama’s look modest in comparison. He is an unpleasant, self-important political hack who can’t be trusted. He’s Barney Frank without the lisp. His day has come and gone. We nominate him at our peril.
