Newt takes no-adultery pledge

By ALEXANDER BURNS | 12/12/11 1:09 PM EST

When the Iowa social conservative group The Family Leader unveiled a sweeping pledge on marriage and abortion over the summer, Newt Gingrich was one of the candidates who passed on signing it.

Now, Gingrich has answered the pledge with a lengthy written response, vowing to support a federal marriage amendment, reinstate the Mexico City policy -- and, per the stipulations of The Family Leader pledge, to be faithful to his wife:

I also pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.

Gingrich's full response after the jump ...

To Bob Vander Plaats and the Executive Board of The FAMiLY LEADER:

I appreciate the opportunity to affirm my strong support of the mission of the FAMiLY LEADER by solemnly vowing to defend and strengthen the family through the following actions I would take as President of the United States.

Defending Marriage. As President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as Speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the military. I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts. I will support sending a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification. I will also oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman.

Newt made the quote in a public interview. He was then publicly quoted as having said it. He never denied saying it. Iow, he let the quote stand. It’s what he said. For some reason that is more than you can bear. Sad.

The daughter was a child 30 years ago when all this happened. She is not the ultimate authority. Both Jackie and Newt agree that he is the one who wanted the divorce, and that he was insensitive about it. If you think the quote is amiss, show me one respectable citation where Newt challenged it. You can’t, because it is exactly what he said.

Rude...

You are calling me a NON-Christian now?

I thank God for HIS Grace and Mercy. I would never do that to anyone. No matter what stance they take.

Jesus loves you and ME!

Well that’s one way to admit you were dead wrong. Nor do I agree I was rude.

I didn’t laugh at you. Now that is rude.

You believe what you want, I do not agree with you.

I never said I was wrong. Like your postings it is taken out of context.

The LOL was related to the continuing argument that was obviously going no were.

I would like to end this on good standing, if you will, Let’s agree to disagree..

I think its all nuts.

We should support the most conservative candidate, that’s not Newt or Mitt. They probably could all beat Obama, that is why we shouldn’t settle for parodies.

We can certainly end on good standing. You’ve done me a great favor. You’ve shown me how useless it is to discuss this subject w Newt’s supporters. Nothing affects them or alters their view in the least. Show them a direct, undisputed, never-challenged quote by Newt himself, that totally invalidates their belief, and they laugh. Rather than believe Newt and Jackie [whose stories validate each other] they take a person who was a mere child thirty years ago, and put her forth as the world renown expert on Newt’s first divorce. It’s as if true insanity had taken over.

Bottom line: I know not to discuss facts on this issue w true believers in the future. It will save me a lot of time. So thanks for that, and best to you.

In your opinion...

In my opinion the 13 year old girl was there, you were not Nor was I.

She said she will be involved with his campaign, along with her sister and her mother said she would help in any way she could by helping babysit the Grand kids. Her mom said she wants to stay out of the Media because of how they treated her.
We all shall see if that is true.

This is today. I will go with today, in my opinion.

The Best to you too.

So the 13 yr old was there, and Jackie and Newt were not?

Or if the two adults remember it one way and the child [now an adult] remembers it differently, her story trumps both of theirs?

Yes, the daughter is actively campaigning for Dad. And that makes her an impartial witness...how??

None of this makes sense. Nor are Newt’s fans helping him by revealing their lack of objectivity. All you’ve done is made me profoundly more wary of Newt. Anything his fans tell me about him, I will double and triple check. His supporters are not to be trusted, if this exchange is any indication.

No! Tell me it's not true Leni You can't tune out of the debates. We want your original POV posts re same.
My sons and I are treating debates like Reality TV. I'm thrilled that they are having strong opinions re anything political. Also, it doesn't hurt that we make it a pizza party with a bottle of red.

Thanks for the compliment. I'll probably watch the next debate. I'm like an old war horse that comes alive when the trumpet blares.

I'm afraid I'll miss something, too....although the debates are quite predictable so far.

I want Trump to MC a debate!

I'm so tired from my move that I couldn't get enthused about watching another debate for a couple of weeks.

I watched some True Crime shows instead. There's a joke in there somewhere, heheh.

Leni

The CLAIM was “Gingrich ended his first marriage by serving his wife with divorce papers while she lay in a hospital bed dying of cancer.”

1. She wasn’t dying: she’s still alive today.
2. She didn’t have cancer. She was being hospitalized for removal of a benign tumor.
3. He didn’t demand a divorce in that meeting; they already had been separated for months and were in the process of getting a divorce prior to her being hospitalized.
4. Moreover, his wife asked HIM for the divorce, not vice versa.
5. He concedes getting sucked into an argument about the pending divorce while he was visiting—he even has retrospective regrets about having made the visit—but that wasn’t his intent or the purpose of the visit.

In short, while the gist of the story is true, many of the most unflattering particulars are quite false. http://unionleader.com/article/20111118/NEWS0605/111119892

I’m not defending Newt’s serial infidelity, but just because he’s been a jerk in some regards doesn’t mean that every story about his being a jerk is true.
