The deal signed by the eurozone countries still faces huge hurdles, because of simmering tensions between the member states and growing disenchantment within their own borders.
A startling poll last night showed that only a third of French people believed that their country should stay in the euro indefinitely.
The situation in Germany was scarcely better with support for staying in the single currency long-term standing at just 41 per cent.
The figures were revealed in a ComRes survey for CNN last night. It shows how the leaders pressing for closer integration are dangerously out of touch with their own people.
The poll was conducted across seven eurozone countries. It also found that only 38 per cent in Greece and 37 per cent in Ireland and Portugal wanted to remain in the euro.
The study found that almost half of the French and Germans believe they would be better off outside the euro. Some 42 per cent in both countries said they should never have joined the currency.
Just 37 per cent of people in Germany and 35 per cent in France believe their economies are in better shape because they are in the euro.
In Germany about 40 per cent were also opposed to the idea of closer European integration as championed by Angela Merkel. Only 15 per cent thought EU officials could be trusted to run Germanys economy. In France, just 20 per cent of people thought EU officials should be handed sweeping powers over the economy.

The workers of Germany and supporting the rest of Europe. Not a good situation.
“The workers of Germany and supporting the rest of Europe.”
Amen to that!!!
The French and particularly the Germans have finally realized that they have gone into business with their retarded socialist brothers to the south, and that no amount of hard work will ever make the business successful.
Yep. It seems Fredo is in charge and no matter how much money you make nothing is going to change until the people at the top change.
As usual the pols ignore the peasants wishes. “Same as it ever was”
Don’t these countries have to have a referendum/election on this latest agreement for it to take effect in those countries?
Actually, Italy exports more stuff than the Brits (Europe’s Financial capital) and even more than the Japanese - if one considers the population numbers. There was no housing bubble (she enjoys a high ownership rate), and places third in Gold reserves. And...
According to Morgan Stanley, Italians sit on 8.6 trillion euros of net wealth or about 340,000 euros per household, the highest among major industrial nations.
Plus, though full of problems, you’ll just have to take my subjective word for it, life is much better, sweeter and safer (not to mention tastier) than Germany. And with 60% of the world’s art treasures it’s also prettier.
How are people over there responding to the Federazione Anarchica Informale letter bomb that exploded at the tax office? Think this will escalate as the leftists rebel against the austerity measures?
I saw this coming YEARS ago!! The European countries all have proud histories, but they never wanted to become the United Sates of Europe!! The more that the leftists in Brussels pushed the leftist agenda on all of the EU countries, the more I could see things starting to crack.
Each country has its own means of pride and identification but, little says more about a country than its currency. When the European nations began to abandon their identity by adopting the Euro, I knew it would only be a matter of time.
The EU and the Euro will, IMO, soon go the way of the Dinosaur. It was an interesting experiment but, given the nationalistic pride each country has in itself and its history, this was simply not going to be a permanent situation!!
It’s just barely in the news. Fringe crazies. Real malcontent still has to kick in. It got some Twitter feedback in the form of dark irony:
«Letter bomb explodes at Equitalia (tax collection office). It was the first instalment»
«Letter bomb sent to Equitalia. 60 million Italians under investigation»
There have been some strikes - the usual ineffectual 3 hour deals and not even by all the acronymns of the confederation. But like the French and Germans, sentiment against United Europe and especially the Euro is on the rise. Should the Euro implode (and it’s hard to imagine that it won’t), ironically the country that stands to suffer the most is Germany. Her strong Mark will put many of her products out of reach and the weaker Lira, free to be adjusted will make Italy’s exports more affordable.
Will there be a resurrectiuon in the Red Brigades during the chaos? Probably. But the Communism of the 70’s is mostly dead here. Much of the working class vote has gone to the Northern League. Plus Italy’s an aging country (the real crisis).
They are surrendering self determination to the EU if they accept this nonsense. Why would the Germans and the French want to be ruled by a committee of amoral, politically correct technocrats who could care less about them and who are untouchable.
The Western elite made a religious ideology out of social and economic globalism. It is a world take over by an elite class claiming they will deliver peace and security and equal wealth distribution upon the globe. It is totally based on faith because there is nothing that supports such promises from centrally controlled top-down rule in the history of mankind.
Globalists what to be the globe’s royality and are concerned about their wealth and power and nothing else. They have no respect for human beings nor for individual freedom and self determination. To top it off, they beleive in eugenics.
I hope the Europeans tell this elite class of wannabe rulers of a global collective to kiss off.
You need to ask Nigel LaFarge that question.

Some will goo full-on commie, others fascist. All statist under the banner of free elections and making the trains run on time.
The EU will not end well.
Why should they? It’s like the US and Canada having to support the rest of the western hemisphere. We’re doing enough of that already without sharing the same currency.
As in the US, they don’t like government-RICO either.
Wow! That guy is a hero! I hope the Europeans listen to him. He’s not kidding nor exaggerating!
