Digging into China’s nuclear tunnels
Yahoo! News / The Washington Post ^ | November 30, 2011 | William Wan

The Chinese have called it their “Underground Great Wall” — a vast network of tunnels designed to hide their country’s increasingly sophisticated missile and nuclear arsenal.

For the past three years, a small band of obsessively dedicated students at Georgetown University has called it something else: homework.

Led by their hard-charging professor, a former top Pentagon official, they have translated hundreds of documents, combed through satellite imagery, obtained restricted Chinese military documents and waded through hundreds of gigabytes of online data.

The result of their effort? The largest body of public knowledge about thousands of miles of tunnels dug by the Second Artillery Corps, a secretive branch of the Chinese military in charge of protecting and deploying its ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads.

--snip--

But the strongest condemnation has come from nonproliferation experts who worry that the study could fuel arguments for maintaining nuclear weapons in an era when efforts are being made to reduce the world’s post-Cold War stockpiles....

Yeah, we can't stop our head-long rush into unilateral disarmament, can we?

I just realized that this could be the first thing I’ve read in 10 years of a University actually doing something interesting, creative, and worthwhile.

Wonder what would happen if the Three Gorges Dam in China got itself nuked..?..

Releasing a flood of biblical proportions.. darkening most of China.. cutting the country in half..

THEN.. nuking three or four other areas...

If anyone believes that China has only a few hundred warheads, they are fools. Theirwar doctrine is to survive and win a nuclear war. We are crazy to only have 5000!

It should also scare you that None of the previous Secretaries of Defense, not Bill Gates, or even Donald Rumsfeld, had a significant intel operation to warn America about the true size of the Chinese nuclear arsenal which they are attempting to conceal.

What’s more scary is that the Russians have 12,000 nukes, scattered throughout Russia AND CIS countries friendly towards it (EG Kazakhstan, Belarus, ect), with storage facilities including Yamautu Mountain and very extensive tunnel networks that were continued after the fall of the USSR. China has about 4,000.

Thank goodness everyone in the U.S. has not fallen for the naive belief that China has turned capitalist and only wants to make money through "free trade."

China and Russia are using minor-league powers like North Korea, Iran, and Venezuela to sap our strength and distract us from the real threat.

Kazakhstan and Belarus are NPT signatories and gave up all
nuclear weapons by 1996.

This doesn’t matter if the weapons are controlled by Russian forces. It is the same as the US having nukes on Ramnstein AFB in Germany for NATO defense.

One must ask about the intelligence, competence, and yes, loyalties of so-called "non-proliferation experts" who can actually "condemn" a study which could make us better informed on such a critically important subject.

This is maybe the first realistic and productive non-science college project I HAVE EVER HEARD OF.

The faculty must LOATHE this guy.

Ya know what? I’ll bet you’re the kind of guy who locks doors, and stuff. Nasty, you know?

I’ll bet you worry about gang-bangers carrying guns —you precipitate incidents.

With no folks like you, we’d live in a perfect world, see?

The Chinese scared the crap out of the Soviet Union in the 1970s. The Russians knew that they could not prevail in a full-scale war with them, back then. Now it’s an order of magnitude worse.

One day, we’ll dare China...an hour later, the American that are still alive will wonder what the hell just happened.

It is HORRIBLE that we cannot figure out that they mean business and now have the resources to execute.

HOWEVER-——it would probably help the unemployment a bit, because a new-type of compass would have to be made!!!!!

Anyone who believes that the Cold War is over is a fool of the first order.

The only way the Cold War will end is if it becomes HOT.

The repressive dictators of the world will not tolerate the existence of a free nation.

If the passivist of this nation succeed in sufficiently weakening this country to a sufficiently unprepared for war status that our enemies are emboldened we will be attacked and the Cold War will end.

Peace last only so long as our enemies are afraid to attack which is why we were attacked on 9/11/2001.

I was glad to read this, but should WaPo and the prefessor really be exposing all of this to the Chinese?

The nuclear weapons were repatriated to Russia.
They would figure into Russia’s SALT and SALT II allotments.

I am not aware of any Russian nuclear forces still on the
territories of former SSRs which became independent.

"nonproliferation experts "

I love how these a-holes invent "experts" on the spot. Yeah the "nonproliferation experts" have done such a great job so far-- just ask India, China, Pakistan, North Korea, Iran...

OH and BTW, we analyzed this concept for our own missile defense system back in the Cold War days. War gaming it showed it was so easy to defeat, we never bothered with it.
