Newt Gingrich's surge to the top of the Republican presidential field has some conservatives imagining the former House Speaker as the anti-Romney. Gingrich is encouraging such a view with his claim that he is "certainly more conservative" than the former Massachusetts governor. The Manchester (N.H.) Union-Leader's endorsement added to the perception of a growing "newt-mentum" to anoint Gingrich as the preferred conservative in the Republican presidential field. But there are substantial reasons why thoughtful conservatives should think very carefully before jumping on this bandwagon.
There are, for example, gaping holes in Gingrich's conservative credentials. As the American Spectator's David Catron pointed out Monday, Gingrich has long been a fan of Dr. Donald Berwick. Berwick just resigned as President Obama's director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which oversees Obamacare. Obama put Berwick there because of his professed love for Britain's socialized medicine.

I painfully agree with this. But I'm having a really hard time with Newt basically working on behalf of the Democratic Party via Fannie Mae to help Fannie Mae thwart Republicans from passing legislation to regulate Fannie Mae. That's a hard one for me to over look. But Newt did get the budget balanced and even ran a surplus and he reformed welfare into block grants (which Obama's stimulus act wiped out).
But Romney? I won't vote for him. I'll concentrate my dollars on Republicans taking over the Senate.
I like Santorum too- but he looks too whiny and pitiful on stage
not presidential at all
Newt looks like he can’t wait to get Obama in a debate, like a lion on red meat.
I would pay good money to see that
and if coward Obama refuses, he is going to follow him from town to town- he announced that the press can contact the white house for Newt’s schedule, because he will be everywhere Obama is, 4 hours later.
I will not vote for Mitt Romney.
Just say NO to AmNewtsty !
Obama will debate Newet, he’ll just make sure the debate is rigged (not that they all aren’t). And the media will proclaim Boy Historic the winner once again.
I’m a republican and more important a conservative one. I’ve listened to the ranting and raving about why each of our current candidates is unelectable.
I’ve heard loud and clear Ann Coulter saying that we should bypass the primaries and rally around Romney. I think I’ve read my last Ann Coulter column folks until she regains her sanity. When it comes to backing a candidate she is almost always wrong.
Three weeks ago, I decided that I’m for Newt. So far, no remorse. Each day I hear something from him that makes me stop and think, and say to myself, “You know, Self... that makes a lot of sense.” Like today he said we need a nation of Lawyers with Christian values. Think about that for a minute. I guess he could have directed this to teachers, doctors etc. but he targeted Lawyers.
You see, it’s making me think, and asking the “why” he said that.
No other candidate for many years now, as long as I can remember, made me think. No other candidate in my life time have I considered to be smarter than me, except Reagan and Kennedy.
Yes, the tag stalker newt will really help!!
I figure Newt is as conservative as Romney, maybe. Which one has the best character, honor, decency? It’s a tough question, and one I hope I don’t have to worry about. If Cain keeps getting assaulted by “fifteen minute” bimbos, I’m going to join the Palin crowd in hoping for the unlikely and impossible. I don’t see any of the other wannabes playing shooting star for the GOP.
If I could just pick the next President I would choose Cain, Santorum, Bachmann, or Perry over Newt.
But that’s not how it works, of course.
I’ll stick with Cain for now, but if Newt bests him and it comes down to Newt vs. Mitt then that’s an easy call for me.
I will be voting GOP in November regardless.
Every day I am sickened anew by Obama.
Plus I read a brilliant article by Newt that told how precedents have been set to remove activist judges from all our benches. That hit me like a ton of bricks—I thought we were stuck with them till they died. I also think he might truly be a great orator. I hate the lib part of him though. Good gravy, how did we end up in such a mess?
You have made your intentions very clear. You have vowed to continue to actively campaign against Romney and I take you at your word. Perhaps your best hope if Romney wins the nomination is for a third party candidate to get in the race.
geez quit repeating media lies- go to his website and check out his info on this topic
Perry isn’t going to remain trailing for very much longer. He’s just moving at his speed, not the LSM’s.
No wonder I’ve hung around Free Republic for so long.
You and I think 99.999% alike.
(Can’t think of what that .001% is at the moment.)
I like Newt and I liked Newt in the 90s too. But female Independents I knew in the 90s hated the guy. A lot of it had to do with the foxhole comments about women in combat but there just seemed to be a visceral dislike that I couldn’t understand. But I definitely think this guy can stand up to the media abuse that is thrown at the presidency. After all, that’s how he kicked off the debates.
“Good gravy, how did we end up in such a mess?”
I vote for our “public education system.” We’ve let union goons “educate” our children since the 60’s. How do else do you create the “personal thought processes” that result in the electorate we have today? They have changed our voting public today from people who “think and “reason” to people who “feel.”
“Hope” and “Change” are meaningless words, but the “educated masses” buy them hook, line and sinker. Speaking of Good Gravy, I took my grandsons to school for their parents the other day. I gave them a couple of min-root beers to have with their lunch. They were not allowed by the teacher to drink them on school property. So much for parental “rights.”
Why was Santorum eliminated from the start by the Republican primary voters? Is it because is the youngest of the Republican candidates? Or is it that they are just too uninformed to recognize him?
