Thomas Sowell On Gingrich And Immigration
IBD Editorial ^ | November 28, 2011 | The great THOMAS SOWELL

Posted on 11/28/2011 3:51:13 PM PST by Kaslin

Now that Newt Gingrich has become the latest in a series of Republican front-runners, he is getting the kinds of scrutiny and attacks that have done in other front-runners.

One of the issues that have aroused concern among conservative Republicans is that of amnesty for illegal immigrants, especially after Gingrich said that it would not be "humane" to deport someone who has been living and working here for years.

Let's go back to square one. The purpose of American immigration laws and policies is not to be either humane or inhumane to illegal immigrants. The purpose of immigration laws and policies is to serve the national interest of this country.

There is no inherent right to come live in the United States, in disregard of whether the American people want you here. Nor does the passage of time confer any such right retroactively.

The usually sober and thoughtful Wall Street Journal, on issues other than immigration, outdoes Newt Gingrich's claim that it would not be "humane" to deport illegal immigrants who have been living here a long time. A Wall Street Journal editorial says that it would be "psychotic" to do so.

"No one honestly believes the government should or will mount a nationwide manhunt to deport millions of people," according to the Wall Street Journal.

What we have today is virtually the opposite of that. Cities that openly proclaim themselves "sanctuaries" for illegal immigrants put their own policemen under strict orders not to report illegal immigrants to the federal authorities, with the result that illegal immigrants who have committed crime after crime are free to stay here and commit more crimes, including murder.

I would fully be in favor of the two suggestions you offer. They should have been put in law years ago.

RE :"I would fully be in favor of the two suggestions you offer. They should have been put in law years ago."

I try to come up with ideas that are easy to defend, compared to clueless Republicans that constantly claim they are for stuff and never pass it into law and dont even really argue for it. When they do their arguments are lame and never convince anyone.

The one thing I will say about Democrats : they know how to fight by poll testing arguments and throwing them at Republicans like target practice.

"Tax the millionares to keep you from paying payroll taxes". Very simple message.

The Democrats have the experts left over from the Russian Bolshevik revolution and hence forth to help guide them in how to subservient a country. Our side of the political spectrum tend to be honest and forthright regarding the needs to keep the Republic strong and working toward the personal safety and freedoms of it’s citizens. It pains us but perhaps in the final analysis, as things come apart in a very bad way more people in this country will recognize the L/MSM and left are the ones to blame for most of this country’s ills.

I don't really think so either. I should not even have printed it.

I agree with your sentiments vis a vis immigration enforcement.

I agree with Sowell that breaking the law for 25 years is no better than breaking it for one year.

So many aplolgists for some conditional amnesty cite the sheer logistical problem of deporting millions of illegals. To my mind this is easily solved, if you keep in mind 2 points:

1. Every illegal, wherever he or she is, got there on their own resources. Therefore, there can be no doubt that they have the resources to get back to their point of origin.

2. Their motivation for coming here is because they want to live/work in the USA. This is obviously a big motivation, when you consider the dangers they are willing to risk, the enormous sums paid to "coyotes" to be smuggled in, etc.

Seems to me these two facts can be used to "incentivize" illegals to deport themselves. Simply anounce, with repetitive ads, in all pertinent languages, using radio, TV & press, that illegals have a one-year window for returning to their country of origin and beginning the process of immigrating legally. At the end of that year, anyone found in this country illegally will not only be deported, but they and their entire family, to the next generation, will be forever barred from legal entrance to the USA regardless of any mitigating circumstance, scholarship award, medical emergency, hardship, etc.

In my opinion, the vast majority of non-criminal illegals would hasten to avoid that penalty. As for the criminal element, we'll just have to imprison them in a manner that minimizes the expense - i.e., no law libraries, cable TV, gyms, etc.
