This newspaper endorses Newt Gingrich in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary.
America is at a crucial crossroads. It is not going to be enough to merely replace Barack Obama next year. We are in critical need of the innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership that Gingrich has shown he is capable of providing.
He did so with the Contract with America. He did it in bringing in the first Republican House in 40 years and by forging balanced budgets and even a surplus despite the political challenge of dealing with a Democratic President. A lot of candidates say they're going to improve Washington. Newt Gingrich has actually done that, and in this race he offers the best shot of doing it again.
We sympathize with the many people we have heard from, both here and across the country, who remain unsure of their choice this close to the primary. It is understandable. Our nation is in peril, yet much of the attention has been focused on fluff, silliness and each candidate's minor miscues.
Truth be known, many in the liberal media are belittling the Republican candidates because they don't want any of them to be taken as a serious challenger to their man, Obama.
Readers of the Union Leader and Sunday News know that we don't back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers. We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent-minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job.
We don't have to agree with them on every issue. We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear.
Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate. But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running. In this incredibly important election, that candidate is Newt Gingrich. He has the experience, the leadership qualities and the vision to lead this country in these trying times. He is worthy of your support on January 10.
This is a big deal...the Union Leader...maybe even huge.
If Gingrich comes out of New Hampshire with a victory, then Romney is dead in the water. Some might not even like Gingrich, but taking out Romney would, all by itself, be a huge service to the nation.
I don’t vote from any Globalist from any party anymore.
The conservative third party is getting ready to take hold. We will stop the rinos this election one way or another.
Newt has at the very least in recent years showed extremely poor judgment or extreme Liberal tendencies in his public posturing on national affairs.
Gingrich can only survive the Primaries, General, and Presidency if he’s disciplined. He can no longer follow the motto, “If it feels good, do it.”
>> The conservative third party is getting ready to take hold.
A certain victory for Obama.
Let’s face it, this is the GOP “B team,” if not the “C Team.” And Obama is quite capable of defeating anyone of them.
A rino nomination is a certain victory for Obama. Give is a conservative and we will crush Obama.
Let’s face it, this is the GOP “B team,” if not the “C Team.” And Obama is quite capable of defeating anyone of them.
Never trust anything bill clinton does or says. If he endorses Newt it’s because he knows that his endorsement will turn conservatives against Newt. Bill is no dummy. He’s from the South and he knows how the conservative mind works.
I would not call them “extreme” liberal tendencies, but I would call them liberal tendencies. Is he doing this because he is a liberal, or because the media has battered him into having to appear moderate?
Real conservatives stand on principle alone.
Newt has displayed very bad judgement in the past...he is a serial adulterer, someone what has been recently linked with extreme liberals and supported their causes.
And yes, global warming is a left wing extremeist view point. He supported a left wing whack rino in new York state and has been seen supporting causes of such people as Nancy pelosi, chuck schumer and other nut jobs on the left.
Newt is a no sale and if nominated the conservative wing of the republican party will take our issues to a third party and run against the left wing GOP and the left wing democrats. We have no place else to stand so we will stand with our principles and a candidate and party that will stand with us....not the GOP that makes us stand in the back of the bus.
Horsefeathers. Trying to take the politics out of politics? There's a lot more considerations than principle.
If the Romney workers can get principled people to act solely on their principles, Romney gets the nomination by default. And if little barry bassturd in the White HOuse can get non-democrats to vote upon only their principles, well then the conservative momentum is dead and little barry wins re-election and the House and Senate fall back into democrat control due to low conservative turnout. Game set and match ... aren’t they special? Sadly, even when they see the ruse they fall to it because they’re ‘principled’.
William Buckley Jr. said you vote for the best conservative WHO CAN WIN. On principle I vote for Rick Santorum and watch Obama beat him like a red-headed step-child. Accounting for politics (ie the real world), I vote for Newt unless someone better breaks out.
What war did Newt fight in, again?
The sinkEmperor campaign, bloody riot it was. A major crooked of single-bullet fame player tried a Scottish Law gambit to protect sinkEmperor. Worked, sadly enough.
I’m glad you saw Newt in my comment. I’d say he’s the best fighter of the current crop of candidates.
