An Editorial: For President, Newt Gingrich (New Hampshire Union Leader)
New Hampshire Union Leader ^ | Nov 27, 2011 | JOSEPH W. McQUAID

This newspaper endorses Newt Gingrich in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary.

America is at a crucial crossroads. It is not going to be enough to merely replace Barack Obama next year. We are in critical need of the innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership that Gingrich has shown he is capable of providing.

He did so with the Contract with America. He did it in bringing in the first Republican House in 40 years and by forging balanced budgets and even a surplus despite the political challenge of dealing with a Democratic President. A lot of candidates say they're going to improve Washington. Newt Gingrich has actually done that, and in this race he offers the best shot of doing it again.

We sympathize with the many people we have heard from, both here and across the country, who remain unsure of their choice this close to the primary. It is understandable. Our nation is in peril, yet much of the attention has been focused on fluff, silliness and each candidate's minor miscues.

Truth be known, many in the liberal media are belittling the Republican candidates because they don't want any of them to be taken as a serious challenger to their man, Obama.

Readers of the Union Leader and Sunday News know that we don't back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers. We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent-minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job.

We don't have to agree with them on every issue. We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear.

Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate. But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running. In this incredibly important election, that candidate is Newt Gingrich. He has the experience, the leadership qualities and the vision to lead this country in these trying times. He is worthy of your support on January 10.

Compared to the Nashua Teletrash and the Concord Communist Monotone it is. It’s declined greatly from its former greatness and influence when the Loebs were running it.

If I recall, he spent about $25 million of his own money, and ended up with about 23-25% of the primary vote totals.

The same total he has maintained throughout this primary. Face it, Mitt, 75% of R voters don't want you to be President!

New Hampshire FREEPers, what do you think?

RINO kingmaker McQuaid endorses fellow RINO...yawn. Always good to see Romney take a swift kick to the nads, though... :-)

Newt Gingrich is nothing like Bill Clinton except for his IQ. Thats why he likes Clinton. Real smart people like to interact with other real smart people.

Newt Gingrich is a committed conservative with a long record to back it up.

best equipped for the job

Our country has many of most difficult problems we've faced as a nation. Let's not put someone in the white house that'll take 2 years just to figure out how to use the elevator.

Nations have a history of turning to old warriors in times of trouble even flawed ones.

Forget the fact Gingrich a liberal, Open Borders Republican. Just endorse a RINO and hope for the best. America deserved better from the Union Leader.

Most likely, this is going to come down to Newt vs. Romney. This narrative is being written as we speak. Justified or no, if that narrative takes hold - and it most likely will - it will become the reality (self fulfilling prophecy).

So what’s it going to be folks? Newt or Romney?

If Newt is successfully taken out, then it will be Romney. How do you square yourselves with that?

There’s probably not enough time for another Not Romney test drive. Some candidates - Bachmann, Perry, Cain - have briefly risen to claim the Not Romney slot, only to just as quickly crash and burn. None of those are likely at this point to have a phoenix like resurrection. That leaves Santorum and Huntsman. Anything is possible, but neither of those two are likely at this stage to become the next Not Romney. Paul will not be the nominee.

So, are the purist - looking for the perfect candidate that does not exist now and will never be - going to take out the last viable alternative to Romney (and thereby ensure that Romney gets it by default)?

Forget the fact Gingrich a liberal, Open Borders Republican.

ou keep posting that Newt is for open borders and I'll keep posting the truth...

Newt believes America must be a nation of laws. The first duty of the federal government is national defense, and it is inexcusable that we haven’t secured the border. In his 21st Century Contract with America, Newt pledges to control the southern border by January 1, 2014, waiving any regulations and pushing aside any bureaucracies that get in the way.

As we secure the border, we must make an aggressive and serious effort to deport all criminals, gang members, and any other threats to our society as quickly as possible. We must also tap into the ingenuity of the private sector to better validate who is in the United States legally.
