Newt Gingrich Stands by 'Soft' Immigration Stance, Despite Party Backlash

WASHINGTON — Newt Gingrich isn’t backing off his “humane” immigration stance despite complaints from Republican hardliners and fellow Presidential hopefuls — he’s embellishing it.

The former House speaker issued “10 Steps to a Legal Nation” this week, expanding on his remarks during Tuesday’s GOP debate

(snip)

Those guilty only of sneaking into the U.S. would have a path “to legality, but not citizenship” similar to the existing naturalization process, plus a penalty fee of at least $5,000.

“What is his position on deporting or legitimizing illegal aliens and their families?”

I think that he has made it CLEAR that his position is to enforce the laws that we have, which means deporting them.

Newt, on the other hand, wants to change the laws to reward the lawbreakers.

Get back on subject now, this is not a thread on abortion it is on the tool Newt and amnesty.

Cain on immigration ENFORCE ALL CURRENT LAWS.

It is called ‘attrition thru enforcement’

Here is a post all the way back from 2007 by sink

Time for you to admit that you have no problem with amnesty and that is why you will support Romney or Gingrich.

He also suggested a $5k penalty and a requirement that they do not get entitlements or welfare. They’d need to speak English. They would not be permitted to vote.
They’d basically have to prove that they are worthy of being permitted to remain here as guest workers.
There’s more but you get the idea. It doesn’t sound so much like incentives when you read the details.
A good many of them would fail to clear those hurdles, and they’d be deported.
“Very severe penalties for employers” of illegals, would help insure they didn’t hang around.
Gingrich’s mistake was to offer details as if he’d be given a fair hearing by his rabid detractors.
When these details are tweaked out of Bachmann, Cain, and the rest, they will sound very much the same.

“No one else is addressing the issue of HOW to deal with the huge number of illegals already here.”

Actually, the boss covered that one....

You THINK? What do you know?

Is it his position to deport all 12 million illegal aliens by force along with their American Citizen children?

Tell me what you KNOW about his position.

Just reading your post tells me who the too stupid one really is here. So, I should just support your guy, Mitt right now.

I am finished with the Socialist Republican Party pretending to be what it isn’t.

Newt has been a bag of SH*T for several years, I and many here will not vote for another McCain RINO scumbag POS. I will let the voters reap the harvest they have sown.

YOu are being manipulated, not me. I haven’t taken out anyone, I didn’t like him from day one, or Myth Romney, I used to refer to Newt as Duh Newt.

“If we diss Newt, we’re screwed. He’s the only electable canidate still in the race.”

There goes the ole “only electable candidate” meme.

They were saying the same thing about the Tea Party....and look at what we have accomplished in so little time.

Why? because we wanted to. We KNEW what change was needed and faught to make it happen...at the ballot box. Not only did we take the house back, but threw out a few RINOS as well.

You can’t expect miracles from mere men overnight. We must keep chugging along and pushing ahead and NOT take it in the a$$ as the political class expects us to.

“He also suggested a $5k penalty and a requirement that they do not get entitlements or welfare.”

Meaningless. Either hardship exemptions (which are easy to get when there is no tax record), or courts waive it, or INS waives it, or Congress doesn’t bother passing it in the first place.

“They’d need to speak English.”
Irrelevant. We have plenty of English speakers that could care less about this country.

“They would not be permitted to vote.”
We all know that the courts will simply not permit that to stand.

“They’d basically have to prove that they are worthy of being permitted to remain here as guest workers.”

To whom, representatives of La Raza? We already have a process for immigration...they should go home and use it.

“There’s more but you get the idea. It doesn’t sound so much like incentives when you read the details.”

Maybe not to you, but to people south of the border, it’s a GOLD MINE. They can live here, and work, and have kids, and not have to worry about being sent home.

“A good many of them would fail to clear those hurdles, and they’d be deported.”

We have NO IDEA if that’s the case, since we don’t know who they are, what papers they can come up with, how ACORN will be involved in coaching them, and how much Newt will wind up watering down the plan. I suspect the vast majority will wind up qualifying, and I don’t want to put the demographic future of this country at risk with that gamble.

“Very severe penalties for employers” of illegals, would help insure they didn’t hang around.”

We already have those penalties. And, in fact, Obama is doing a BETTER JOB than Bush-43 did in enforcing them. As long as the Illegals are here, it’s a TOTAL CRAPSHOOT as to whether there will be any enforcement. I have zero confidence in ANY candidate, of any party, to enforce our immigration laws anymore. The only option is to GET RID OF THE ILLEGALS.

“Gingrich’s mistake was to offer details as if he’d be given a fair hearing by his rabid detractors.”

Yep, what a dummy on that. He should have waited until he had the nomination before bring up Amnesty...like McCain did. He probably blew his only only shot.

“You THINK? What do you know?

Not necessary...once you get rid of the INCENTIVES, like Newt’s legalization, the rest will take care of itself (and you know that).

So have a nice day.

Yeah, too much DC, went a little soft. I think he later said that amnesty was a huge mistake.

No, I am just a person who is sick and tired of liberal lies and bias, and particularly sick and tired of them getting away w it w/out anyone even calling them on it. That is where I’m coming from. Is that so hard to understand???

He must be fully committed to faithfully executing and enforcing the laws of the land and that means he must be committed to enforcing the immigration laws and SECURING THE BORDER!

Has Gingrich given any indication of an unwillingness to enforce the law? I believe that Gingrich is one of the few candidates who understands that the duty of the President of the United States is to faithfully execute the laws of the United States of America.

The problem we have had for a half a century is that no president has bothered to enforce the laws that are on the books. So effectively we have been without any immigration laws. The result is that we probably have about 20 million American Citizen children of illegal aliens growing up and either now eligible or soon to be eligible to vote. We will never win another election if we deport their parents. We need to find a way of securing the border and legitimizing the parents of these children. Newt's approach is clearly not perfect, but we aren't going to be deporting 12 million parents of American Citizens. No president is going to do that. We need to secure the border and then find a way to ensure that what has happened over the last half century is not repeated.

Maybe I'm a RINO for taking the position that we have be be realistic. But I'm not about to pretend that any of the other candidates is not going to end up with some kind of plan where a large chunk of illegal aliens are allowed to continue to live here.

All of these candidates is for some kind of compromise on this issue. So far Gingrich is the only one to be honest enough to say so.

Excellent and the reason you need a natural flow reversal. It will involve something just like Newt has suggested, along with getting Mexico out of ‘failed state’ status. That will take strong legal reforms freeing the economy. That will take force as the ruling oligarchy likes things just as they are.

Given a path to citizenship, etc. They need to get out and do it again correctly...this isn’t hard.

I feel disenfranchised with the whole term Rhino, now. With McCain, I understood it and believed it to be a valid concept....but it’s now a term of zealotry and witch hunting within the conservative movement and it could only lead to Romney or Obama...

If it does, I’m ashamed to call myself conservative. These so-called ‘conservatives’ who attack everyone but Romney and Obama...are just snakes in the grass. I don’t believe Jim is, but I think his statement is just a sentiment he truly feels. I just would hope we don’t bury every other alternative to Romney...it’s just getting way too close and only we have ourselves to blame for being so fickle.

We have to take control over our choosing from now-on. We have to vet, promote, and get involved with these candidates in a non-bias way. That must be our future way of picking or else we leave it to the media who will pick the closest thing to Obama (by targeting the weak spots).
