Sen. John Kerry (D., Mass.) Monday said a deal to cut the federal deficit fell apart because Republicans refused to raise taxes, and said the issue would be the defining debate for Congress as the country heads toward the 2012 elections.
"America is stuck with the absolute rigidity of people who wanted to protect the wealthiest people in the country instead of providing $1.2 trillion of deficit reduction," Kerry said in impassioned remarks hours after the congressional panel announced it had failed to reach a deal. "That's the fight we have to take out to the country over the course of these next months. That will define this next year I believe in this country."
He tried to salvage a deal by presenting an idea in last-minute talks. But a Republican aide shot down the plan, saying it wasn't clear the informal plan was backed by other Democrats. The plan was a reworked version of an earlier proposal, according to a supercommittee aide.
"This doesn't end here today and tonight," Kerry said. "I want to say that to every American. This fight just begins, because now we're going to hold people accountable and we're going to continue to bring to the floor, continue to bring to the Senate of Congress choices about how we can act responsibly and get our nation back on track."
He also said he was "disappointed." He said "we had an opportunity to be able to show the world that the Congress of the United States knows how to govern, and we had an opportunity to prove at a time that Europe is in a particularly fragile economic situation that we were ready to show the way forward, and even as we did so to make America a safe haven for investing for money."

Yeah, run on raising taxes ... thats the ticket. That will get you the White House again ...
Go suck on a ketchup bottle, you gold digger.
I wonder if Lurch ever paid the back taxes on his boat?
What America is stuck with are leftist liars whose water is carried by the MSM Riefenstahl Press (you, Kerry, are sent forth as a member of the second-team roster of players when the particular lie is too big to be carried by the first team).
The justice brothers --- Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson can't be far behind.
These people don’t seem to understand a very simple concept.
The American people are taxed to the point that it’s borderline slavery. We could take 100% of the income of the wealthy and it wouldn’t make a dent.
We don’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. Don’t these people in places like Greece, Italy, and the U.S. realize that if they don’t learn to be self reliant and stop pushing for more and more entitlements that we are facing a world wide financial collapse? America and Europe will cease to exist and we’ll have nothing and our children and our children’s children will pay the price for our selfish desires for a nanny state.
We either learn to sacrifice a little now or loose EVERYTHING later. What is it about this very simple equation that people don’t understand? Are they really willing to sacrifice all our futures for another year or two of entitlements?
A couple of years ago, I read for the first time, the citation that came with the Bronze Star my step father received for action in the Korean war. It was also the first I learned that he even got a bronze star.
I was astounded by the actions by him, described in that citation, that would certainly be described by me, as heroic and was somewhat surprised that he only received the Bronze Star.
My brothers and sisters and I were going to get him a set of Bronze Star license plates for his b/day. He got wind of it before we did it and promptly vetoed that idea.
Oh, he has a purple heart from that war also but unlike Kerry, he was actually shot to earn his.
Why don’t they just get rid of the automatic increases in the current spending and start cutting from there. There’s no need to raise taxes.
From what I have read the fellows he was serving with were happy to see him go.In fact they told him to go or he might suffer a tragic accident.
Kerry won’t tell you that when the Democrats took Congress and the Senate in November, 2006, their dogmatic Keynesian redistributionist policies have worked to destroy the U.S. economy. When the Democrats took over, the national debt was 1.8% of the Gross Domestic Product. Now it is 10% and climbing. Unemployment was 4.7%. Now it is above 9%.
Democrats have encouraged the growing size of government which contributes very little value for the economy and costs a colossal amount to maintain. Democrat spending has contributed to a constantly growing national debt which is over $14 trillion. Their answer is more taxation, which drains the available money out of peoples hands into the government and destroys the incentive to create new wealth. This ignores the fact that when you reduce taxes, businesses create new wealth, more people are employed and tax revenue increases. Increased tax revenue through lower taxes is the answer; not more taxation.
When government spends more and borrows more to pay for its deficits, less money is in peoples hands to create economic growth and jobs.
The United States has lost approximately 42,400 factories since 2001. Democrats have allowed other nations to manipulate their currency rates, impose high tariffs, put up artificial barriers to American products and flood our markets with cheap products. Democrats then hurt American industry with over-regulation, over-taxation and allow unlimited civil liability. Such policy has contributed to the exploding U.S. trade deficit, the ongoing devaluation of the U.S. Dollar and the shrinking middle class.
Democrats have turned a blind eye to rampant corruption on Wall Street. They are the major players in Crony Capitalism where politicians give favorable government policy and contracts to those who give campaign contributions. These campaign contributions, many derived from tax dollars, become a slush fund for playing the stock market using insider trader info from their Wall Street connections. This is why they want to grow Government. It to increase their client base, many who throw that money back to them in the form of campaign money. This money is sent to encourage continued grant money, contracts and favorable laws that hurt competitors.
Democrats have failed to stop the increasing derivatives bubble because they benefit from them. The Wall Street reform bill did next to nothing about derivatives. When this bubble finally pops, it will cause an economic catastrophe of Biblical proportions.
Democrats have turned a blind eye to the growing retirement crisis that threatens to bankrupt America. It is ironic that Baby Boomers who have largely kept Democrats in power have ironically set the stage for their own disaster Social Security is soon to collapse and the states are $3.2 trillion short of what they need to meet their pension obligations. And Baby Boomers are the first ones to call for free medical handouts in the form of Obamacare. They will find out the folly in trusting the Democrats.
In fact, when the Democrats rammed Obamacare down our throats it never fixed the health care industry. They made it worse. America will realize this failure as the aging Baby Boomers impact the system.
bravo
Okay... we just got a free peak at the latest moronic mantra we'll be hearing from every one of them for the next six months. How ‘bout coming up with one of our own instead of just letting theirs become accepted truth by dint of constant repetition?
I'll start the contest with, “we're not going to let them spend money we don't have”. Next?
And speaking of “tracks”, JFKerry couldn’t find one if he was sitting on it.
That’s what I heard—that he wrote his own after action reports. I’d like to see proof—because he needs to be embarassed so much that he never shows his horseface again in public.
Am agreed with all you said. Kerry is POS poseur—didn’t even throw his own medals over the White House fence, but reveled in the fact that everyone believed his did.
Thanks for sharing your story about your Dad, Graybeard58.
He earned his medals the hard way. I wonder if men like him have too many memories of others who didn’t make it—the medals are not that important to men with those memories.
He sounded like he was a brave but modest man. The type of man we are going to need a lot of in the near future to right this ship of state. God bless.
Taxes HAVE BEEN the governing issue, a-hole!
“Taxed Enough Already” — Heard of it? F-head!
Thanks Son House.
Total crook insider trader Kerry is also a master at avoiding his taxes.
But he certainly wants to raise yours.
FUJK
That would make an excellent target!
No he didn’t. He purchased his yacht overseas and it is not moored in MS to avoid guess what!
