Oregon halts all executions in blow to US capital punishment system

Oregon’s Democratic Governor John Kitzhaber has said he will allow no further executions in the state while he is in office.

Mr Kitzhaber said he was stopping the death penalty as he considered it to be morally wrong.

The move will be a blow to the US system of capital punishment.

The move effectively halted the scheduled execution of convicted killer Gary Haugen, who had waived his appeals and was scheduled to die by lethal injection on Dec 6.

“It is time for Oregon to consider a different approach,” Mr Kitzhaber said in a statement. “I refuse to be a part of this compromised and inequitable system any longer; and I will not allow further executions while I am governor.”

Oregon has carried out two executions in the last 49 years, both during Mr Kitzhaber’s first administration as governor, the statement said.

BTW effect is a noun, affect is a verb

Not true. "Effect" can be used as a verb, as in "Barack Obama was elected on his promise to effect (v.) change in America. However, the only effect (n.) he has had is to drive our nation to the brink of despair."

Private citizens will be forced to effect (v.) executions in Oregon if they want proper justice for their loved ones.

And they won't be so neat and uniform as those the state would perform, but they will be as timely as possible.

The Left hates victim’s families, Justice and themselves, most of all.. and take it out on all of us dealing with their inner struggles.

Hopefully, all of the rapist move to Oregon and then they can feed them. Here in Texas, we try and shoot them, so we don’t have to feed them!

Okay folks, understand that I didn’t vote for him... either time he’s been Governor.
Understand also that I (and most of you) believe that the oath taken by military officers to defend the Constitution is binding long after their discharge from service.
Governor Kitzhaber is a medical doctor and has taken an oath prior to that of Governor. While I can’t support him as Governor I have to cut him a little slack on this issue.
Damning him for this issue is no different than excusing an Oathkeeper for ignoring his oath to the Constitution.
JMHO - YMMV.

Every death penalty law should have a specified length opf time for the execution to be carried out wihin 2 years would be about right.

IMO, Less if DNA evidence has convicted the person.

A few years ago, some pols came up to our hamlet, looking for our votes. Among them was a lawyer running for a judgeship. I talked with him about the benefits of DNA freeing people wrongly convicted and he gushed over what a boon that was. I proposed to him that since DNA could IMMEDIATELY free a man, why couldn't someone convicted of a murder, especially with DNA evidence, be put to death a lot sooner than 10-20 years? Deer-in-headlights. "I never thought of that." sez he. I told him if he wanted to make a name in judicial circles, perhaps he should propose or back that idea. Never heard another word.

I’m a captitalist at heart so I be willing to do some horsetrading with the liberals.

I’d trade banning captial punishment for banning abortions.

We should hereon refer to the Governor as John Kibbitzer.

Yiddish:

A person who offers unsolicited views, advice, or criticism; one who kibitzes.

Ex: Did I ask you what you thought about my card hand, you kibitzer!

Yeah, I’m sure because a leftist state like Oregon putting a halt on its two executions per century is going to make Texas sit up and suddenly stop executing child murderers and the like.

Another example of the god-complex that delude leftists.

And note that Oregon will gladly supply you all the meds you need for kill yourself. Somehow, they think by not killing capital offenders frees the state of any blood-guilt.

Maybe they could just help the convicts by administering assisted suicide to them. That should be acceptable in Oregon.

You’re sharp enough to be here FReeping. Effect and affect gave me a rough time in school until someone pointed out the trick that most of the time effect is a noun and affect is a verb. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

You’re too sensitive, FRiend. I am not the ‘police’ and you’re not under arrest or even indictment for bad grammar. Free Republic is a place to learn and hone your skills. It’s common that FReepers point out errors and make corrections. Your error is a common one and the solution is simple.

I am sorry that you have hurt feelings over it. How was your Thanksgiving?

That’s true, but rarer. IIRC it’s only the infinitive ‘to effect’ that works that way.

Not hurt feelings, just annoyance at the people who think its their place to correct others in an informal setting.
